FROM THE GOLF PRO ED HOLDING Scramble a Good Score Part 1

Although most golfers would gladly play every shot from a perfect lie in the centre of the fairway, such is the nature of the game that it is inevitable that, from time to time – or perhaps even more frequently – you will find your ball in a rather difficult situation.

MAKE A STEEP SWING IN THE ROUGH “A most important fundamental of shots from the rough is to contact the ball before hitting the turf,” Gary Player recommends in Gary Player’s Golf Secrets. “You should meet the ball with a sharply descending club head. An upright backswing, with the wrists breaking early, will help achieve this downward hit.”

EXTEND DOWN THE SLOPE TO AVOID FATS AND THINS If you are prone to catching the ball fat or thin, David Leadbetter recommends that you hit some practice shots off a downhill lie with C a short iron and play the ball back in your stance. The downslope will encourage you to extend your follow-through low to the ground M

Expats welcomed to Dainfern

It was a well-oiled collaboration of service providers ably co-ordinated by Samantha Weir of the Business Exchange and Laura Powell of the Dainfern Homeowners Association that resulted in yet another successful gathering of ladies at the beginning of October.

eld at the Business Exchange in the Dainfern Clubhouse, this get-together was arranged to welcome new Expats to the HDainfern community. Nicola Leitch acted as MC for the occasion and each service provider present was able to spend 3 minutes explaining what it is that they do and how residents can utilise their services.

Looking at the list of activities and services available to Residents, it’s no wonder that Expats choose Dainfern as the preferred estate to stay in while they are in SA.

Running with your best friend Your dog might be your ultimate training partner – most dogs are willing to fit in with your schedule, have boundless energy and won’t cancel on you at the last minute. All dogs need exercise – just like humans, it keeps them healthy, and there is nothing like a wet nose in your face to motivate you out of bed for a pre-dawn start.

Six tips for tail-wagging training

t is in both your best interests to and drag him out for a trot, is that he can’t child to run 10km with you, so don’t ensure that your furry training buddy breathe. Literally. Dogs with short noses expect that from your puppy either. the optimum fuel for your dog on the run. You may also want to consider a supplement for joint health, something containing glucosamine and chondroitin. A vet check-up is a good way to ensure your dog’s joints are in the necessary shape to run – screening for hip dysplasia or luxating patellas is the responsible thing to do.

#6 – MANNERS MAKETH MAN (AND DOG) Dog faeces in the tread of one’s running shoes is sure to spoil any runner’s day, so be considerate of other runners using the roads and don’t allow your dog to soil there - or make sure you clean up after him. Ideally, for the comfort of your dog, yourself and any other runners that you may come across, your dog should run close to you, on a slack leash and be obedient at all times. This is not the time for him to be charging off after rabbits or birds as it could be dangerous to both of you. Some dogs are better suited to short chases and retrieval, and these dogs are better exercised in ‘off-leash’ parks and dog runs.

We are fortunate to live in a place where we can safely run with our dogs. Running can be a great way to bond with your faithful hound and keep both of you healthy at the same time. Just remember, his safety and well-being is in your hands.

Happy running to you and your best friend.

Dainfern College believes strongly in the value of activities that extend pupils beyond the confines of the traditional academic curriculum. Smile Foundation

One child, one letter and one phone call gave birth to the Smile Foundation 15 years ago.

ormed in 2000 as The Smile Fund after a personal request from Mr. Nelson Mandela to help a little girl living with a Ffacial anomaly, to date more than 1500 children’s lives have been changed.

Madiba asked the Lubner Family to help him secure surgery for a young child suffering from a rare medical condition causing facial nerve paralysis (known as Moebius Syndrome).

The Lubner Family, inspired by the little girl’s story, saw the bigger picture. There was no sustainability in sending one child overseas, so why not bring the skills to SA. With that, Dr. Ron Zucker and Dr. Craig Van Der Kolk were invited to South Africa to transfer the skills of the technique to South African doctors.

A surgeon, Dr. George Psaras, then Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Witwatersrand was the first surgeon in the country to learn this exceptionally specialised skill. The Independent Newspaper group joined them and the Star Smile Fund was born.
