Murray George Shrieve, Jr. James Zielinski The price tag on an education is being marked up! How much did it cost for you to attend Ball State? Many people across these United States are becom ing increasingly concerned with the mounting, costs attendant to higher education at even our state col leges and universities. Ball State, by law, cannot charge tuition. But whether it is called tuition or fees ( as it is at Ball ~tate) someone still has to pay. Here is what Ball State students have paid in fees over the years:

Resident Non-Resident Years Fees ( per year) Fees 1919-23 $ 7.50 $ 43.50 1924-28 45.00 81.00 1929-33 46.50 82.50 1934-38 75.00 111.00 1939-43 79.50 115.50 1944-48 84.00 120.00 1949-54 96.00 132.00 1955-56 111.00 171.00 1957-58 150.00 240.00 1958-59 180.00 270.00 1960-62 225.00 315.00 1963-- 285.00 486.00

However the present $285 for fees amounts to less than 18% of the $1600 that is estimated· as a minimum cost for a student to attend Ball State today. Where do this year's students get the $1600 necessary for a year's college education? e Mom and dad foot the bill out of their regular income. e Summer earnings e Savings account or insurance policy e Work during the school year. ( About 42% of the present student body are working all or part of their way) e Scholarships. (Less than 4% of the student body have scholarships greater than $175 per year) e Loans. ( About 10% of the student body carries some form of long term loan and another 13% find it necessary to borrow money on a short-term basis during the school year.) How can alumni help? By providing dollars for alumni-sponsored scholarship and loan pro grams. Make the 1964 Alumni Fund Drive a success by helping deserving students to help themselves.
