Wow, what a year! 2018-19 was an amazing year for GIIC, in many ways we planned and hoped for and in a few ways that pleasantly surprised us.

We started strong with higher than average enrollment in all of our 2018 summer camps and solid numbers in our 2018-19 school year programs. We then had an unexpected request from to shoot a short film at our Girls Inc. Meyers Center. What fun! In late fall we launched the bold but very needed social emotional program GEMS (Girls Empowerment Mentoring Support) in all nine elementary schools in the Alameda Unified School District. In winter, we applied for and received a Growth Grant from our Girls Inc. National Organization in order to grow and share our impactful programming with an additional 300 girls. During the spring, we had a very meaningful event with our teens and Julie Thompson, President of the Thompson Family Foundation, and her amazing group of powerful and inspirational friends. They are a diverse and strong group of women and it was a treat to learn from their experiences. We also celebrated our 55th birthday in April 2019! Phew, what a year!

We are starting the 2019-20 fiscal and school year in strong financial health thanks in part to the guidance and diligence of our wonderful board of directors, our generous donors, the kindness of our volunteers, and the incredibly hard work of our staff. eW look forward to strengthening the programs and relationships we built in 18-19; we look forward to working with new school superintendent and district staff; and we look forward to spending more time thanking our community. We invite you to see all the wonderful programs and improvements we have occurring because of you, our amazing supporters. Thank you to everyone who supports Girls Inc. of the Island City. Because of you, we have the ability to serve even more girls all over the city of Alameda.

Sincerely,

Christine Chilcott Chief Executive Officer 1 OUR MISSION 2018 - 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Alameda Island Kids

In 1981, at the request of the Alameda Unified School District, the Activity Center opened as a licensed child care service for families on school sites. Once again, Girls Inc. of the Island City responded to the needs of the community by providing a safe place for children during afterschool hours. In 2006, this program was renamed “Alameda Island Kids.” It currently serves 337 children at Bay Farm, Earhart, Edison, Franklin, and Otis Elementary Schools. Alameda Island Kids before- school and after-school services are specially designed to provide age appropriate daily activities including organized games and sports, cooking experiences, science, dramatic play, arts and crafts, and much more. Activities are designed to develop social skills and build confidence. 4 BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2018 - 2019 ANNUAL REPORT
