July20,2008,9–5,TreasuresintheBasement:PegmatiteMinerals,ofthePikesPeak GraniteatCrystalPeak,Dr.BudWobus Theoldest("basement")rocksoftheFlorissantareaareofthePikePeakintrusive eventwhichoccurredaboutaBILLIONyearsago.Associatedwithcertainphasesofthisgranite arepocketsofcoarsecrystals()whichhavemadetheareaaroundCrystalpeak famousamongmineralcollectors.Amazonite(andotherlesscolorfulformsoffeldspar),smoky quartz,micas,andahostofothermineralsoccurinthesesmallbodies.Thedaywillbeginwith aslideprogramattheMonument.Handoutsforthefieldtripwillbeprovided,andonerelevant butoptionalpublicationisforsaleattheMonumentVisitors'Center.Thisseminarissuitablefor anyonewithaninterestingeologyandmineralogy.Wewillspendtheafternoonsearchingthe "dumps"ofpegmatitesontheCallenderpropertyatCrystalPeak,wherewehavebeengranted access.Toputthemineralogyinperspective,themorningwillbedevotedtoafieldtripinthe surroundingareatounderstandtheregionalgeologicsetting,whichincludesgranitesolderthan thePikesPeak(whichalsocontainpegmatites,butofadifferentkind)andthestill-older metamorphicrockstheyintruded.Wewilllearntodistinguishtheseveralgenerationsofgranite, onlytheyoungestofwhichcontainsthefamouspegmatites.Youshouldbeabletodosome moderatelystrenuoushikingandshouldhavesturdyfootgear.

JaneMannon,communityaffairsmanageratthe minenotedthat“thiswasauniqueopportunityto keepthecrystalintheareawhereitwasfound anditwasauniquedonationforus.” ThecrystalwasfoundintheHolyMosesPocketof Fetterd’sGodsendClaiminTellerCounty.Itis4- foot,3-incheslongandweighs439pounds.(see picturebelow). ZONEDPEGMATITESOFTHEMICANITEDISTRICT FREMONTANDPARKCOUNTIES,COLORADO ByAndyWeinzapfel INTRODUCTION Thisarticleisbasedonlibraryresearchandfieldworkconductedduring2007. TheMicanitepegmatitedistrictcoversanareaabout4squaremiles,partiallyonBLMland, partiallyonprivateproperty.Focusofthisarticlewillbeonthenorthernportionofthedistrict havingfavorableaccess.

LakeGeorgeGemandMineralClub June,2008Page5of10 Basedonmappingby Wobusetal(1979)the areaisdominatedby metamorphicrocks,mostly biotite-cordierite-sillimanite gneissandschist.The districtischaracterizedby steeptopography,andis anerosionalwindow throughrather monotonousyounger rocksassociatedmainly withthenearbyGuffey volcaniccenter. Pegmatitesintrude Precambrianmetamorphic rocks.Mineralsreported fromthepegmatites includelarge“books”of muscovitemica,pink microclinemassesas muchas10feetacross, cordierite,whitealbite,biotite,apatite,schorl,garnet,berylandrosequartz.Probablythemost abundantattractivemineralremainingforthecollectorisschorl(blacktourmaline): MININGHISTORY Themininghistoryofthe districtisdescribedby Hanleyetal(1950).In 1902and1903,theUnites StatesMicaCompany locatedandhigh-graded severalpegmatites.Much developmentworkwas doneduring1904-1907. Thedistrictremained inactivefrom1907-1934, whentheknownmajor depositswereacquiredby ColoradoFeldspar CompanyofCanonCity. From1934-1942,the companyproducedabout 2,000tonsoffeldsparand175tonsofscrapmica.

LakeGeorgeGemandMineralClub June,2008Page6of10 PEGMATITEZONATION Severalofthemajorpegmatitesarezoned;thatis,discreteareascanbemappedbasedon differingmineralogyorgrainsize.Worldwide,zonedpegmatitesusuallyoccurinclusters.From inwardtooutward,fourzonesarerecognized(Hanleyetal,1950): The corezone consistsofwhitequartzwithminorcream-coloredmicrocline.Thisunitishighly resistanttoerosion.Crystalsofmottledflesh-pinkandgreenapatiteasmuchas3feetlongand 1footwidehavebeenreportedfromthewestsideoftheRoseDawnpegmatite.Theapatite zone,severalfeetacross,wasrecognizedinthefield,althoughnogiantcrystalswerenoted. Thismineralfluorescesadullyellowbrown.

The intermediatezone consistsprimarilyofquartz,albite,andmuscovite.Cordieritecrystals arereportedtoextendacrosstheintermediatezoneintothecore.Massesofmuscoviteupto4 feetindiameterhavebeendescribed.

LakeGeorgeGemandMineralClub June,2008Page7of10 The wall zone consists of quartz, reddish microcline, white albite, muscovite, and biotite. Accessory light brown garnetcrystals are present, as well as largemuscovite books. Schorl wasnotedinthefieldinthiszoneattheeastsideoftheRoseDawnpegmatite. The borderzone isanextremelynarrowzoneattheedgeofthemetamorphiccountryrock. Thesamemineralsasabovearefound,butaremuchfinergrained.

INTRIGUINGMYSTERYMINERAL Bever,1953,describesanoccurrence300feetwestoftheClimaxpegmatiteof“glassygrey- violetcordieriteasmuchas3millimetersindiameter”.Whilespecimensizeissmall,the descriptionisintriguingbecauseitappearstobethatofiolite,thegemstonevarietyofcordierite. Sincecordieriteisahardmineral,7ormoreonthemohsscale,withminimalcleavage,iolite canbecomeanattractivetarget.This“occurrence”wasbrieflyfield-checkedbutnoiolitefound. Abundantnon-gemmyblackcordieriteispresentintheareadescribed.Itispossiblethatfurther fieldinvestigationmightfindiolitealso. SAFETYANDCOLLECTINGTIPS Severalpegmatiteminesinthedistricthavenarrow,exploratorytunnels.Theseshouldbe avoided. Inmyopinion,thebestpegmatiteformineralcollectingwithrelativelyeasyaccessistheRose Dawn.Unfortunately,duetosafetyhazardsdescribedbelow,thismineisnotrecommended foranyclubfieldtrip.Theroadbelowtheminedumphasparkingforonlyonevehicle,butone canalsodrivedirectlytothemineface.Theminedumpcontainssignificantschorl,minorberyl, apatite,rosequartz,andattractivesmall-scaleradiating“feathermuscovite”.However,the dumpisrathersteepandunstable.Largerockscaneasilybedislodgedandrolldowntheslope ontofellowcollectors,ordirectlyontothemainroadbelow.Abovethedump,atthenearly verticalmineface,therearemanylooseboulder-sizedrockshighonthewallwhichcanbe dislodgedbycollectingactivities,especiallyhammering.Attheeastsideofthemineface, schorlispresentbutrocksaboveareveryunstable.Nearthewestside,bothapatiteandsmall amountsofberylcanbefound.Theberylislightgreentocreamcolored.
