www.sports.wingate.edu 1 2009 WINGATE LACROSSE 2008 Lacrosse Outlook The Wingate University men's lacrosse team will rely on solid senior leadership as they enter the 2009 season. "The good news for Bulldog lacrosse…we have great senior leadership," Wingate head coach Sonny Ziegler says. "I know they will do the job…and provide great leadership for our team."

"The not-so-good news…we had a huge senior class (in 2008)," the 2008 Deep South Conference Coach of the Year acknowledges. "The two biggest keys for us this year…number one…we must have great senior leadership. The second key…our sophomores and juniors must adapt to increased roles."

In 2008, Wingate compiled an 11-3 overall record. The Bulldogs won the 2008 DSC regular season title with a 4-0 league slate. Wingate hosts C.W. Post Saturday, Feb. 14 to open the 2009 campaign (2 p.m. first face-off). The Bulldogs will play six (pre-season) nationally-ranked opponents in 2009. ATTACK

Wingate's starting front line will include seniors Greg Williams and Bryan Egan and redshirt junior Angus Derbyshire. "Greg has done a great job for us (for four years)," Ziegler notes. Bryan is a leader who will do whatever it takes for us to succeed. Angus has battled through a number of injuries. He is as healthy as he has been since he arrived on campus."

Sophomore Billy Mutton will be the first substitute off the Bulldog bench. He saw significant minutes during his freshman campaign. Freshman David Lee is one of the hardest workers on the team. He will see time in certain situations as a true freshman. MIDFIELD

Wingate's midfield will be anchored by two team captains. Graduate student Mike Bayliss is back after missing the 2008 season due to injury. "Mike is a major contributor (for us)," Ziegler states. "He has a solid shot from the outside. During his year (off), Mike has added much muscle to his upper body. He is much more confident with his moves."

Both Bayliss and Mark Hodsdon are two-time team captains. An All-Deep South Conference selection, Hodsdon is "one of the most out- standing midfielders in the country," Ziegler says. Hodsdon spent the most recent summer in Vancouver, British Columbia playing indoor lacrosse.

"Indoor lacrosse helped Mark on a number of levels," Ziegler acknowledges. "Leadership-wise, Mark brings so many positive traits (to the table). He will be a great influence on our freshmen and sophomore (midfielders)."

Senior Ryan Otterblad will be a full-time midfielder in 2009. He spent part of his junior season in the midfield; the Virginian came to Wingate as a midfielder. "Ryan is hard to defend," Ziegler says. "He presents our opponents with significant match-up problems."

Two Wingate newcomers will make an impact on the Bulldog midfield. Redshirt freshman Travis Barrett missed the 2008 season due to an injury. "Travis is a skillful dodger and a versatile athlete," Ziegler says. Freshman Bryan Bayliss is the younger brother of Wingate team captain Mike. "Bryan runs with good dodging ability," Ziegler says. "He will learn our system and the college game…on the fly."

Ziegler believes redshirt junior John Simpson is ready to make a contribution. Simpson also missed the 2008 campaign due to injuries. "John feels confident with his knee," Ziegler states. "Health-wise, John is ready to go."

Three sophomores will man the defensive midfielder position: Chris Johns, Matt Ramsey and Ryan Kasek. "Matt's size is a big plus," Ziegler says. "Ryan is very, very fast. This group will be solid in clearing situations."

Freshman Derek Malone "is a great athlete who will earn game time as well," Ziegler mentions. Freshmen Bryant Lilley and Michael McDaniel are making the adjustment to the college game.

Sophomore Adam Jones is Wingate's first option in the long-stick midfielder position. Wingate's first defensive substitute in 2008, Jones is a former soccer player who runs well and exhibits good stick skills. Freshman Zack Brown has good size; he will learn from Jones' leadership this season.

DEFENSE

Pre-season All-American Evan Schaller is a four-year starter for the Bulldogs. "Evan will cover our opponent's best attack man," Ziegler notes. In 2008, Schaller was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III at-large first team (college division), as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

An All-DSC pick last year, Schaller's speed allows him to serve as wing in face-off situations. He was second on Wingate's team charts in ground balls last season. Schaller and 2008 graduate Kyle Costello represented the Bulldogs on the 2008 DSC All-Tournament team.

Seniors Adam Krinsky and Clay Westbrook will join Schaller as starting defense men for the Bulldogs. Krinsky will cover the other team's best crease player. Westbrook will play close defense this year; he was Wingate's number one long-stick midfielder in 2007 and 2008.

Sophomore transfer Talmadge Farringer joins the Wingate family as a transfer from NCAA Division I Mount St. Mary's (Md.) University. "Talmadge gives us a very good physical presence," Ziegler says. "Once he learns our system, we believe the sky is the limit (for him)."

Freshman Justin Harward "is a solid defensive player," Ziegler notes. "He is very intelligent. We look for him to make a significant contribution before his career is over." Harward possesses a high lacrosse IQ; he will be Wingate's first substitute in man-down situations.

Sophomore David Robinette "had an excellent pre-season," Ziegler states. "He will call slides for us. We believe David is prepared for (additional) minutes." GOAL

Senior team captain Evan Watts is Wingate's 2009 starter in the nets. Watts will go down in Bulldog lacrosse history as the first Wingate net minder to pick up a victory over Limestone College. Watts served as a short-stick defensive midfielder in 2008 while David Suthers concluded his illustrious Bulldog goalkeeping career.

"Evan is a strong stopper, a good leader and a great communicator," Ziegler acknowledges. "He makes crisp outlet passes…he has a ton of experience."

Senior left-hander Chad Watson "is an outstanding shot stopper," Ziegler says. Watson gives Wingate a solid one-two punch in the nets. Freshman Danny Dlugozima "is a terrific goalkeeper who makes us very strong for the future," Ziegler notes. FACE-OFFS

Bryan Egan will serve as Wingate's number one option for face-offs. He was the number two Bulldog face-off person for the past three years. Freshman Derek Malone will serve as the number two face-off person.

Depending on game situations, Ziegler will utilize Mark Hodsdon and David Robinette for specific face-off duties. "We have many different options in the face-off area," Ziegler says.

Wingate will play six schools that are listed in various pre-season top 10 polls, including defending national champion New York Tech. In addition, 2009 Wingate opponents C.W. Post, Limestone, Mars Hill (DSC foe), Mercyhurst and Merrimack (Mass.) are also mentioned in pre-season top 10 polls.

www.sports.wingate.edu 3 2009 WINGATE LACROSSE Head Coach Sonny Ziegler

Sonny Ziegler completed his fifth season as head lacrosse coach at Wingate in 2008. Ziegler is only the second head coach in the history of lacrosse at Wingate. Ziegler replaced John Dodd, who started the program in 1997.

Wingate has won 32 games during the last three seasons. The Bulldogs won or shared the Deep South Conference regular season title in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Wingate won its first-ever DSC tournament title in 2007. The Bulldogs were 11-3 overall in 2008.

During his five-year tenure, Ziegler has compiled an overall record of 39-30. He has coached 16 All-DSC selections and nine All-DSC tournament honorees (with one tourney MVP). In addition, Ziegler has mentored four All-Americans. Two Bulldogs have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III at-large team (college division), as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Ziegler was named the head coach for the South squad in the 67th annual United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) North-South All-Star game for NCAA Division I and Division II senior student-athletes. University of North Carolina head coach John Haus will join Ziegler on the South staff.

Prior to his promotion to head coach, Ziegler served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs in 2003. Before his arrival at Wingate, Ziegler spent one year as an assistant coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. While at St. Andrews, he served as the team’s offensive coordinator and helped lead the Knights to the first NCAA Division II tournament appearance in school history.

Ziegler also brings NCAA Division I experience to the Bulldog program, as he served as assistant coach under Dick Edell at the University of Maryland during the 2001 season. While with Maryland, he was responsible for coaching the Terrapin goalies. Under his tutelage, senior netminder Pat McGinnis garnered first team All-America honors. During his one-year stint with the Terps, Maryland finished the regular season ranked third in the nation and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Ziegler also spent 10 years coaching on the high school level in his native Maryland as both an assistant and head coach. He coached at Mt. St. Joseph’s High School, Glenelg High School, Mt. Hebron High School and Calvert Hall College High School. He helped guide Mt. Hebron to the title game of the 1995 3A-4A Maryland state tournament. He led the Vikings to another state final appearance as head coach in 1996.

Ziegler played his collegiate lacrosse at NCAA Division III powerhouse Salisbury University, the seven-time NCAA champions. Ziegler and his wife, Chris, live in Wingate. He understands the significance of this achievement. “I am honored to take part in an event that has such a special place in the history of this game,” Ziegler says.

4 www.sports.wingate.edu 2009 WINGATE LACROSSE Assistant Coach David Olliver

David Olliver joins the Wingate University coaching staff after a stellar playing career for the Bulldogs. He was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs and one of the premiere defensive midfielders in the nation his final two years. Olliver anchored a Wingate defense that led the conference in goals allowed in 2007. The Bulldogs ranked second in 2008, while charting number nine in the nation. He was the recipient of the John R. Dodd Coaches Award his senior year at Wingate.

While at Wingate, Olliver served as a Peer Mentor for three years. He also spent three years as a volunteer lacrosse camp counselor, teaching individual skills to 15-20 middle school lacrosse players. Olliver was the camp director at Teen Adventure Camp (Huntersville, N.C.) in the summer of 2008.

Olliver was part of several organizations at Wingate. He was a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa, the Sports Science Fraternity at Wingate.
