SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : KENDRAPARA

1. Location : is one of the east located districts in Odisha. It lies between 86o14’ to 87o3’ east longitude and between 20o21’ to 20o47’ North latitude. It is bounded by the district in north, district in south, Bay of Bengal in the east and district in the west.

2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April and May and cold during December and January. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June. Annual rainfall of the district was 1509.6 m.m in 2011 which is lower than the normal rainfall (1556.0 m.m).

3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 2644 sq.kms and 1440361 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 1.70. percent of the states territory and shares 3.43 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 545 per sq. kms. As against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1540 villages (including 133 un-inhabited villages) covering 9 blocks, 9 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 309780 (21.5%) and schedule tribe population 9484 (0.7%). The literacy percentage of the district covers 85.2 against 72.9 of the state.

4. Agriculture : During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 144 thousand hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 2532114 quintals, 26 quintals wheat, 70059 quintals mung, 44960 quintals biri, 1195 quintals kulthi, 195 quintals till, 31018 quintals groundnuts, 385 quintals mustard, 100381 quintals potatoes, 22277 quintals of jute and 88486 quintals sugarcane. During 2010-11, the total fertilizers used in Kendrapara district is about 10.09 thousand MT with a breakage of 4.85 MT thousand nitrogenous, 3.30 thousand MT phosphatic and 1.94 thousand MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 64 Kg.

5. Irrigation : During the year 2010-11,, it is reported by Deputy Director, Agriculture, Kendrapara that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 72327 hectares and 62620 hectares respectively from different sources.

6. Education : There were 1112 nos. of primary schools, 692 nos. of middle schools, 363 nos. of secondary school , 39 nos. of general colleges and one engineering diploma collage in the district during 2010-11.

7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 74 nos. of the Allopathic medical institutions with 431 beds facilities, 19 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 16 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2010-11.

8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 14 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 23 nos. of livestock Aid centers and 83 nos. of A.I. Centres were functioning in Kendrapara district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 105 nos. of small scale industries have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 669.00 lakhs with 458 nos. of Employment generated in Kendrapara district. Besides various kinds of handicraft works like Handloom have been developed by the skilled workers and artisans of the district.

10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Kendrapara district during the year covers 136.200 million units and villages so far electrified as on 2010-11 is 1287 which constitutes 91.5 % to the total villages of the district.

11. Tourist : There are 5 nos. of tourist centre such as Kendrapara, Bhitarkanika, Aul (Ali),Tamala Sasan & Santhpura identified by department of Tourism and Culture, Odisha. During 2011, the numbers of Domestic tourists

2 were 480079 and foreign tourists were 418 who visited the tourists spots of the district.

12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 45 Kms. of National Highways, 70 Kms. of state highways, 56 Kms. Major district roads, 280 kms of other district roads, 3105 Kms. of Gram Panchayat roads,392 Kms P.S.Road,761 Kms Village Road and 20 Kms of forest roads are operating in the district.

13. Banking : As on June 2011, there were 80 nos. of schedule commercial banks having 1571 crores rupees deposit and 586 crores rupees credit in the district.


