What is Rapid eLearning?

Rapid eLearning is a fairly new approach in the training world which employs refined tools, methods and processes to produce quality eLearning courses in a fraction of the time of previous methods.

It puts the Subject Matter Expert (SME) at the center of the training development process.

It decreases technical developer knowledge required to deliver content.

Benefits of Rapid eLearning

eLearning is not always the answer, but in situations where the content needing to be delivered is information or knowledge-based, elearning can be a very effective delivery method.

Traditional elearning development employed time intensive methods which allowed the possibility of content becoming out of date by the time the training course was completed.

Rapid elearning, as defined on the previous slide, has dramatically cut down development time which enables learning to happen faster, easier and more cost-effectively.

The ECDP consists of over 45 training modules authored by Fairchild subject matter experts across the globe and cover the following four semiconductor manufacturing process domains:

• SME’s were dispersed globally and spoke multiple languages.

• There was no budget for outsourcing this program.

Storyboard creation process

ECDP Project Manager emails SME an abstract template and PowerPoint storyboard template for their presentation

SME completes the story board and submits to PM for review

If accepted, the PowerPoint is sent to the legal review team who reviews it for Fairchild trade secrets, export compliance, and copyright compliance

PM posts the approved PowerPoint in a commonly accessible development folder indicating it is ready for development

Plug the AC Power Cord into the recorder. This recorder also takes 2 AA batteries.

For the Recording Assistant: How to Set Up the Edirol R-09

Position the recorder so that it is 6 to 8 inches from the presenter’s mouth

The recorder should be below the presenter’s mouth when they are sitting straight pointing up at a 45 degree angle

Ideally the presenter should be seated with good posture, their back straight and their feet on the floor. This will help their voice sound strong and full

Audio levels with buttons

You can adjust the loudness of the recorded audio by using the Input Level buttons on the side of the recorder.

Checking audio levels with on-screen graph

When in Recording or Standby mode, the display graph shows the recording levels for the left and right channels. Adjust the levels so that the graph stays within the green zone.

For the Recording Assistant: Avoid Recording Peaks

It is important that the audio level is set under the peak input threshold.

If the audio level graph goes all the way to “P” and the PEAK light is on, the Input Levels are too high.

Reduce the Input Level until the recording graph stays in the 20 to 6 range as seen on the previous slide.

For the Recording Assistant and Presenter: Edirol R-09 Important Buttons and Functions

Power To turn on the recorder, hold the power button until the display lights up. To turn the recorder off, hold the power button until the display goes dark. Standby Press Record once for Standby mode. The Record button will flash. This will allow you to see and adjust the recording levels if necessary. You are not recording when the light is flashing. Record Press Record again to record audio. The Record button will stay on and not flash. You are now recording.

Stop Press Stop to stop recording audio. When you next press Record you will be recording to a new file.

For the Presenter: Recording Tips

When recording it is important to center your head to the recorder.

There are 2 microphones on the recorder.

If you speak into the recorder off center, the audio will be much louder in one channel.

For the Presenter: Recording Tips Continued

When recording it is important to not speak directly into the recorder.

When you say a word beginning with a P or S there is a lot of breath used. If you are speaking directly into the microphone it can make an undesirable “pop” sound.

It is good practice to speak just above the microphone to reduce this “pop” effect.

For the Presenter: Recording Process

Press the record button 2 times so that it is continuously on.

• Say the number of the PowerPoint slide.

• Speak to the content of the slide.

• Press the stop button.

• Repeat until you have recorded all slides. Please make sure that you record audio for all slides in your presentation.

For the Presenter: Re-recording and handling mistakes

If you make a mistake while recording press the stop button.

Think about how to say what you want.

Press the record button 2 times so that is continuously on.

Say the number of the PowerPoint slide.

Press the stop button.

Repeat this process as necessary until you have successfully recorded the slide.

For the Presenter: How to Replay Recorded Audio

Finder/Menu When you press the finder button the Main Recording Screen changes to the Finder screen.

Select audio track Use the up and down arrow buttons to select the audio track you would like to listen to.

Press play You will need headphones plugged into the headphone jack to hear the audio file.

For the Recording Assistant: When recording is complete When recording is complete you will connect the recorder to your computer and upload the audio files to the network.

• Open the bottom cover of the recorder.

• Plug the USB cable into the recorder.

• Turn the recorder on.

• Connect the other end of the USB cable to you computer.

• The Edirol R-09 will appear as an external hard drive on your computer

For the Recording Assistant: Mapping a Network Drive

Map a drive letter to the ECDP Network Folder

• Right click the Big-Red-N in the system tray and select “Novell Map Network Drive”.

• Select the drive letter you want and enter the following path "\\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" (without quotes). • Check to make folder appear as the top most level. • Click the Map button. • This is known as the Common Drive.

For the Recording Assistant: Uploading Files

Open My Computer and select the drive letter you assigned to the Common Drive.

Navigate to the Engineering Competency Development Program folder.

You will find a folder there with the name of the course that was just recorded.

Move the files from the recorder to this folder within ECDP on the Common Drive.

In My Computer click on the drive letter of the recorder and verify that all files have been removed from the unit. It is important that all files are removed from the recorder after they have been saved to the network.

Results and Success So Far

31 courses released to date with a total of 3,021 completions 6 courses released per quarter through Q4 08 for a total of 45 courses

For comparison, many Semizone courses cost $200 per person for a limited time opportunity to take each course.

$200 per person X 3,021 completions = $604,200 in potential out of pocket savings in the 13 months since ECDP went live

ECDP is a Fairchild specific curriculum which is priceless

A Rapid eLearning approach to course development allowed GTD to complete a total of 34 eLearning courses in ‘07. We’re on track to complete 44 new courses in ’08, and convert 20 legacy eLearning courses to this new format.
