As we enter a new year, one is inevitably drawn into a reflection of the last one, 2020, which this time last year heralded the beginning of a new decade, indeed a year to look forward to with renewed hope and expectation. Who could have foreseen what was waiting for us? By March we were about to experience a way of life unknown to any of us and a new vocabulary i.e. Lockdown, COVID19 and mass testing to name but a few. For the Church, the changes were profound with closure and no services and when the doors were finally opened no hymns and just as we were getting used to a new style of service, we were closed down again. But Church people are nothing if not resilient as new electronic services via Zoom were introduced, unfortunately beyond my IT skills, but not to the thirty plus who joined in each Sunday, a service style that continues and who knows, a glimpse of the future. By now the Christmas festivities are winding down, the turkeys consumed and the crackers pulled and we look forward to a new year full of hope and great significance, a new year which sees the start of a vaccination programme and the pandemic held at bay where life assumes normality and once again we can enjoy the company of loved ones and friends. So, friends we have much to look forward to in 2021, but let us not forget the staff of the NHS, the carers and those who supplied essential services to society in 2020 and remember with love all who were bereaved during that year. Have a special 2021 and God bless you. John Bradfield

3 COMMUNITY NEWS

Some of us will be glad to see the back of 2020. This time a year ago, we were looking forward to the start of a new year and a new decade. But, no one could have imagined quite how significant a Coronavirus outbreak would become, and how much it would impact on all of our lives. Whilst 2020 has certainly been one of the most challenging years in living memory, there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel with Covid vaccines being rolled out across the country. So, as we enter another New Year, I am optimistic that 2021 will be better for all of us. We have known since the onset of this pandemic that a safe and reliable vaccine would be key to overcoming the virus and facilitating a return to normal life. So, it is an outstanding achievement that the has been in the vanguard, leading a world-class research programme to help deliver a number of Covid vaccines that are to be rolled out across the country. There have been a number of media scare stories about the safety of the vaccines, but I am confident that whilst the vaccines have been developed in record time, they have still undergone rigorous safety testing. Huge in- vestment in the vaccine programme has meant that tests that have usually been carried out in series have been carried out in parallel which has allowed the development time of the vaccines to be dramatically reduced. For our doctors, nurses and frontline NHS and care workers this marks a huge step forward and will allow a return to seeing more patients face to face as we move away from lockdowns and the restrictions of working constantly behind masks and PPE. The vaccines offer around 95% protection against Covid-19. So, it is essential that those who are at greatest risk, the elderly and those with underlying health conditions should be the first to receive it alongside our health and care workers. However, the rollout of a vaccination programme will be a vast and challenging logistical effort, not least of all owing to the complexities of the cold temperatures and storage requirements of the Pfizer version of the vaccine. But I am confident that our frontline healthcare workers, public health teams, the military, our supply chain workers and volunteers will pull together and rise to the challenge. By Summer 2021, I would hope that we can all look forward to a gradual return to some level of normality but in the meantime, it is essential that we do not drop our guard and that we all continue to play our part in preventing the spread of Covid. Suffolk has been at the forefront of following Government guidance, so please – stick with it, there is light at the end of the tunnel. We shall get through this and look for- ward to a happier and healthier 2021.

News from All Saints

2020 Patronal Appeal Update. We have now reached the staggering total of £1485. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. It is still not too late to send your contribution to Michael Dawe at Flocky Cottage, Hacheston, or BACS it to Hacheston Parochial Church Council. Sort Code 20-98-07. Account No 20454486. This success has, in part, enabled us to put in hand the outstanding building work now in progress. The stonemasons have been working on and off during the last few weeks of December to stabilize the crack in the south west wall. Work will commence on the buttress later this winter.

Private Prayer. We continue to remain open every Wednesday 10-4 for private prayer. For services please see service page 2

Fundraising. Well we’ve made it! Our treasurer has now banked a total of £600 from the two church stalls, Thankyou Pat for providing a main road outlet! I am delighted to find that I have regular buyers for my marmalade so, weather permitting, the stall will be a continued feature in 2021, as every little helps. Kaye Dawe

HACHESTON PARISH COUNCIL NEWS.

Sizewell B. The Parish council is responding to EDF’s consultation about the changes to their application to construct C. They propose some improvements to the screening of the Park and Ride facility in Hacheston but we still have serious concerns about the visual impact of the site. The battery power station at the north end of the village has been completed but residents have complained about light pollution from the site. HPC has alerted Noriker, the owners, who appear to be taking the matter seriously and are working to rectify the problem.

HPC hopes all residents had a Happy Christmas and wishes you a safe New Year. Jane Page. Parish Clerk. http://www.hacheston.suffolk.gov.uk

Update on William’s Poppy Run

William successfully completed his 75km by the end of November and raised an amazing £1405.00. He also received a commemorative medallion from the British Legion for raising a minimum of £100.00. (I think his page is still open for a little longer for donations).

https://mypoppyrun.britishlegion.org.uk/fundraising/MyPoppyRun2020-LizziePalmer

A huge thank you to all who sponsored him, and supported him throughout the month. He has been stopped a few times and asked if “he’s the runner”. We are all incredibly proud of him, and he is very proud of his achievements-his self-confidence has come on so much. We have already signed up for the 2021 Poppy Run and fingers crossed we can run with others!

Church News Found in Campsea Ashe Church A pair of fairly small black leather gloves. Belonging to a lady? Call 747177 if you believe they belong to you.

Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Cycle Ride 2020 This year’s cycle ride was predicted to be low-key, due to the effect of the covid-19 virus, but when the day arrived, all predictions were wrong. Of course, the weather was great and that always helps, but the organisers were amazed at the donations made. Here are the numbers: (2019 Cyclists raised £127,000) 2020 Cyclists raised £155,000. This represents a 22% increase, if my calculator is correct. Also, in 2020, £15,000 was raised from the Classic Car Rally, held on the same day. Add gift aid to these amounts, and the total will exceed £200,000. Campsea Ashe’s total was £340, half of which came back to the church. Thank you to everyone who donated. We did well! Glenys Fear

The Village Shop News The Poppy Collection at the shop raised over £160.00 this year we are informed. Thank you all so much for your generous donations. We have also donated another £50.00 to the village hall new toilets fund from the 5p carrier bag charges, this makes we think a total of £355.00 donated from the shop so far. Another thank you to all those who put their spare change in the collection box on the counter. Hopefully we should see some new toilets at the Village Hall in the near future. We are working very hard at the shop with Christmas Orders coming in. So we’re looking forward to having a few days rest over Christmas. Have a good Christmas everyone with hopefully a better New Year for everyone. Best Wishes Ann, Bernard & Elizabeth

8 CAMPSEA ASHE NEWS continued Sadly the Church bells at Campsea Ashe and across the benefice have been silent for much of 2020 and many will be looking forward to hearing them ring out once again in 2021. The bells at Campsea Ashe have been rung for many years - initially a peal of just four, but since the restoration in 2010 a peal of six. Apparently the ringers of 1892 were paid a salary, something the ringers of today can only dream of! Today’s ringers may find the rules of 1892 to be somewhat daunting. How many six pence fines for ‘every oath’ were paid one wonders!
