national achievement Harry Warnock, Chairman of Scottish Youth Theatre’s Board of Directors, reflects on a momentous year and the company’s rapidly increasing international reputation.

The year has seen yet another momentous year for Scottish Youth Theatre; I am constantly amazed at the diversity of the activities the company gets involved in throughout each year. 2005/06 will no doubt be remembered as the year we finally moved into our fantastic New Headquarters in the Old Sheriff Court, Glasgow. It is an emotional experience to stand in the foyer of our new building and see the end result of years of hard work by everyone concerned. The young people of can now look forward to having a space, specifically designed for them. A safe, nurturing environment that will, no doubt, be the envy of many people around the country, particularly when the vast majority of the cost was met by Persimmon Homes and Scottish Youth Theatre.

There have been so many other things happening this year Patron Brian Cox with Chairman Harry Warnock at the Dressed to Kilt event in NYC. that continue to illustrate that Scottish Youth Theatre’s reputation is spreading not just throughout Scotland, but As usual, there are many people to thank for helping to make throughout the world. The development of Geordie (more Scottish Youth Theatre so successful. It is difficult to mention later) has taken us to New Brunswick in Canada and New York, everyone individually, however, I would like to mention a few. USA. Mary McCluskey was also in Perth & Sydney (Australia) Mary McCluskey continues to astound me when I see her earlier in the year following our successful partnership with enthusiasm for what we do and how the young people react NHS Health Scotland, developing Dying for It, a play to that enthusiasm. To her, Caroline Cosgrove and all the promoting sexual health in young people. staff, a big Thank You.

However, Scottish Youth Theatre never forgets that the main To all our patrons, thank you for your continued support, in focus of our work is Scotland. This year, we have continued particular Colin McCredie for helping me in New York. I’d also to work our way round the country from Coatbridge, to Banff, like to welcome Alan Cumming as a new Patron of Scottish Elgin, Arran, Thurso and South Uist just to mention a few. Thanks again to from strength to strength and Aberdeen is expected to be Sir Tom & Lady Anne Farmer, everyone enjoyed New York! the next expansion area. Thanks to all our participants, their families and friends, enjoy the new building, it’s for you! Another obvious highlight of the year was being able to take a cast of young people to New York to perform the world Thanks to my fellow board members, old and new, in particular premiere of Geordie as part of Tartan Week. It was a great those responsible for helping to get the building completed with experience for all concerned, not only to be in New York the help of all our consultants and contractors. A special mention performing, but because Scottish Youth Theatre had a team to Alison Newton who retired from the board in 2005. Malcolm running drama workshops with the young people of New Crofts, Building Project Manager, gets my gratitude for doing York, not only letting them see how we work, but introducing such a good job guiding us through the process. A warm them to Scotland, our culture and our young people. welcome to GCC Councillor and past participant, Euan Macleod.

Thanks have to go to Sir Tom Farmer, who generously Finally, let’s not forget why Scottish Youth Theatre is here. I sponsored our trip to New York, allowing us to take more finish with a quote from a 13 year old participant, who took young people to savour the experience. Sir Tom has become part in one of our workshops, that I think sums up why we do a fan of Scottish Youth Theatre, since he realised the work what we do: that we do, in helping to encourage participants to develop “I liked it because I wouldn’t normally do it and I ‘soft skills’ – skills that they need in everyday life, such as was proud of myself”. self-confidence, presentation & communication skills and team work disciplines. These transferable skills not only help Harry Warnock CHAIR, SCOTTISH YOUTH THEATRE BOARD OF DIRECTORS improve self-esteem but also encourage those participating to have some fun along the way.
