The workplace exposure standard has been halved from an eight-hour time-weighted average airborne concentration of 0.1mg/ m3 to 0.05mg/m3.
Most people would have heard about the dangers of respirable crystalline silica exposure and its potential to cause silicosis, a debilitating lung condition that can lead to death.
While the recent talk has been centred around the dangers to stonemasons, it’s nothing new to the mining industry, which has acknowledged silicosis as one of the primary diseases to affect miners since the industrialisation of drilling operations in the 20th century.
The Dangers of Crystalline Silica Respirable crystalline silica also causes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary CleanSpace respirators meet and exceed disease (COPD), and kidney disease. Queensland’s new minimum requirements, removing 99.95% of airborne contaminants. Silica dust is harmful when inhaled into lungs as it is 100 times smaller than a grain of sand, which means you can be breathing it in without knowing.
Silica is one of the most abundant minerals found in the earth’s crust and is used in many products across a variety of industries and workplaces.
Crystalline silica is most dangerous to health when dust is generated, becomes airborne and is then inhaled by a worker.
While there are many industrial activities where people are exposed to respirable crystalline silica, the most notable are stonemasonry, mining, excavation, construction, tunnelling and abrasive blasting.
There are several areas that are to be addressed to effectively reduce exposure to silica dust. They include wet cutting; ventilation and other engineering controls; isolation; substitution; health monitoring; and respiratory protective equipment.

The Mental Health Commission of WA commissioned an investigation of mental health and wellbeing in the context of FIFO work. The FIFO Mental Health & Wellbeing survey was an integral part of the research project which ultimately resulted in a new code of practice for creating and maintaining a healthy workplace
Mental health issues are a growing problem for Australia, and indeed, Western society. According to a study by Price Waterhouse Cooper untreated mental health conditions cost Australian employers $10.9 billion every year. In support of this important state government initiative, the Mining Club of WA Young Professionals undertook a ‘Design A Donga’ survey. The survey was designed to give the opportunity to mining club members, mining companies and Fly-in Fly- out workers, to share their thoughts and experiences regarding what the ideal mine site accommodation units looks like. Using the feedback received in the survey Grounded and Modular WA designed and constructed two Modular displays for the event. This included a new modular display and a refurbished, preloved display that was in need of an upgrade. The fitouts incorporated many of the innovative features requested by the people throughout the survey.
A number of suppliers were invited to participate and supply the latest products to the builds, giving them a great opportunity to showcase new, energy saving and cost-effective products that benefit the mining industry and those who live and work in it.
Some of the top items listed for improvement included bathroom design, better communication infrastructure and safety, better building acoustics and upgraded internal fit-outs to offer a ‘home-like’ environment to all workers. 56 ACCOMMODATION MANAGEMENT AMR AUG2020 INDUSTRY FOCUS
