E Principal’s Message The 2016-2017 school year is quickly approaching with much excitement! Monday, August 15th is the first day of school. Our vision this year is to be the top producer of successful students in For the Parents, Students and the nation. We define success as students graduating and going forth to be helpful and productive Community of citizens. Our mission is to lead students to success with the support and involvement of families Winter Park High School and the community. The following are our five goals (1) an intense focus on student achievement (2) a high-performing and dedicated team (3)a safe learning and working environment (4) efficient Administrators operations (5) sustained community engagement. I am particularly drawn to our students graduating and going forth to be helpful and productive Note: This list reflects the citizens. This definition of success emphasizes that each student is very important and that they do assignments as of have an impact on others. Being a helpful and productive citizen positively impacts our families, publication date. friends, communities, state, and nation. It speaks to being a dependable family member, a positive MAIN CAMPUS student at school, a hard working employee, an active volunteer, a good-hearted leader, or a caring friend. Our students will go on to have many leadership roles, and it is important that they lead well Principal in a helpful and productive way. Timothy Smith Winter Park High School is a school that has a strong heartbeat. We are a school of character [email protected] solidified by many incredible graduating classes that have established a Tradition of Excellence. Assistant Principals Wildcats respect one another, value each other, and care about people. Wildcats embrace diversity Saraya Miller and work to have a safe, supportive, and encouraging school culture. Wildcats also work together Maureen Scanlan to learn, grow, and be good citizens. Jeffrey Sharpe Recently, the state released school grades, and I am pleased to report that Winter Park High School received an A! With the implementation of a new, tougher grading formula that was not Paul Wilhite officially decided upon until the middle of this past school year, there was a significant degree of Administrative Deans mystery as to how grades would look this year. Our superb students, dedicated staff, involved parents Samantha Jones and supportive community members worked together to earn the A grade. Many thanks to all, and Marcia Owens way to go Wildcats! Craig Russell Orange County Public Schools is providing laptop computers for all of our students this year. District approved textbooks will be accessible through the laptops and students will use the laptops for School Resource Officers class work, homework, and testing. Class sets of hard cover textbooks will exist in most classrooms. Officer Bill Branch AP and IB books will still be in paper form and not available electronically. With any new rollout, Officer Jimmy Angeles there will be unexpected challenges that arise. A few points of good practice follow: Athletic Director 1. Laptops need to be charged each night and ready to go for the next day. A fully charged laptop Michael Brown is vital! 2. Avoid loss or theft by storing laptops in a safe and secure location when at home. A laptop left FRESHMAN CAMPUS on the seat of a parked car is a temptation to those with bad intent. Senior Administrator 3. It is important to care for the laptop and accessories so that the device is long lasting and Paul Maldonado functions well. 4. It can be tempting to use the laptop to cheat or plagiarize which of course is completely Administrative Deans unacceptable. Elisa Mora We also will be utilizing the Kahn Academy software program this year. KhanAcademy.org Bill Wilson prepares students for the SAT exam and at the same time supports the learning of many state standards. School Resource Officer It is worthwhile for a student to invest time in KahnAcademy.org from any computer on or off campus. Officer Murray Daniel Communication this year will take place through our weekly electronic newsletter and our phone MAIN CAMPUS call-out system. If you ever change your phone number, please stop by our guidance office to have your contact number updated. If you do not receive our weekly newsletter, send a text message 622-3200 Fax 975-2434 to 22828. Enter the following text message content: WPHS. PTSA Message Hello Wildcat Parents, My name is Stacey Rodrigues and I am honored to be serving as the WPHS PTSA President for the 2016-2017 school year. For those new to Winter Park HS, the PTSA (Parent, Teacher, and Student Association) is a group of parents and students working together with the teachers and staff to make WPHS the best experience for our students that it can be. New this year is the WPHS PTSA Student committee. This committee will keep us compliant with our bylaws and is a great opportunity for any and all students to be involved with. Similar to the SGA (Student Government Assoc.), PTSA students will participate with school events, community service projects, and work with administration and staff on issues that impact the students at local, county and state levels. Some of our past Wildcat PTSA students have served on the Orange County PTA, PTA and National PTA. During the summer the PTSA Executive Board was busy preparing for the upcoming school year and our first focus was our membership drive. WPHS PTSA membership offers many different levels and is our ONLY fundraiser for the year. PTSA members will receive weekly newsletters keeping parents informed in every facet of WPHS, updates via our PTSA Facebook page, scholarships for our student members, and more. We currently are in need of Volunteers to assist with our many events. Volunteering is a great way to meet other parents, teachers, and staff so should you be interested please let us know. Below is the PTSA calendar of events and meeting dates for the first half of the year: • Welcome Back Cats – schedule pick up, locker assignment’s, parking decals, yearbooks, purchase PTSA membership and receive membership packages • 9/19 - PTSA Meeting – 12:00pm – 9th Grade Center • TBD - Open House – membership and BBQ tickets for sale • 10/17 - PTSA Meeting – 12:00pm – Main Campus • 10/26 - Homecoming Parade, PTSA BBQ, and Wildcat Roar – Park Ave. • 11/28 - PTSA Meeting – 12:00pm – Main Campus • ALL PTSA meetings will have school information provided by Principal Tim Smith Senior Administrator Paul Maldonado and Assistant Principal Paul Wilhite Winter Park High School PTSA “Working together to make a difference in our children’s education”!! This is also the only way we can sell tickets using credit/debit cards. Tickets need to be purchased at least 24 hours before the game to ensure your tickets are ready at the game. There will be a “Will Call” window in the front of the stadium where you will be able to pick up your tickets, you will need to present a photo ID. If you purchase your tickets after the 24 hour deadline, you will need to print out your receipt in order to pick up tickets at the “Will Call” window. 2016 Varsity Football 2016 Freshman and JV Football Day Date Opponent Site Time Day Date Opponent Site Fr./JV Time FRI 8/19 Edgewater (Fall Classic) Showalter 7:00 PM THU 9/1 West Orange West Orange 6:00/7:30 PM FRI 8/26 Lake Nona Lake Nona 7:00 PM THU 9/8 Freedom Showalter 6:00/7:30 PM FRI 9/2 West Orange Showalter 7:00 PM THU 9/15 Colonial Colonial 6:00/7:30 PM FRI 9/9 Freedom Freedom 7:00 PM THU 9/22 Wekiva Showalter 6:00/7:30 PM FRI 9/16 Colonial* THU 9/29 Timber Creek Timber Creek 6:00/7:30 PM (Elementary School Night) Showalter 7:00 PM THU 10/6 Ocoee Ocoee 6:00/7:30 PM FRI 9/23 Wekiva Wekiva 7:00 PM WED 10/12 University Showalter 6:00/7:30 PM FRI 9/30 Timber Creek* (Blackout) Showalter 7:00 PM THU 10/20 Boone Showalter 6:00/7:30 PM FRI 10/7 Open THU 10/13 University* University 7:00 PM Tim Shifflet, Head Football Coach FRI 10/21 Boone* Boone 7:00 PM THU 10/27 Spruce Creek (Homecoming) Showalter 7:00 PM FRI 11/4 Olympia (Senior Night) Showalter 7:00 PM * District Game
