Meeting Places/Times Car park at the Woollen Mill ( Centre), junction of and A82 roads, Fort William – 0800 departure. Alternatively, join at the following places when going: beyond Spean Bridge – Spean Bridge Woollen Mill, 0820; over the Corran Ferry – Corran Ferry slip, 0825; to Glencoe or the A82 south – Glencoe Village car park (by mountain rescue post), 0830; to or the Oban Road (A828) – St Brides School, North Ballachulish, 0825. If you want to join a walk, it is important to contact the coordinator.

Programme Layout The area we are going to is indicated opposite the date of the walk. The relevant OS Landranger (1:50K scale) and Explorer (1:25K scale) map sheet numbers are given. Other maps are available. The grid reference of the starting point of the walk appears in bold in the first line of the route description. Walk distances and ascents are estimated using map data, so changes in altitude of less than 10m are not aggregated. GPS devices may record more. Gaelic translations are in italics.

Route descriptions are designed to be read in conjunction with the map. Headings, bearings, aspects etc. are given simply as cardinal or inter-cardinal compass points unless greater precision is necessary for clarity. Features mentioned and place names used are those represented on the map. Some of these appear only on the larger scale maps. If necessary, positions are defined with six- figure grid references (XX000000) accurate to 100m. Positions derived digitally or using a GPS receiver are given a more accurate ten-figure reference (XX0000000000). Bearings derived from the map are measured from the grid (0000G).

Each walk description is contained within a single page that can be printed and taken on the walk. However, the programmed walks and routes are flexible. Some or all of the members who attend may do other walks or routes in the same area. Suggestions are welcome. It is club policy that each walk will include an experienced member.

Coordinators For each outing, we have a “walk coordinator”. Her/his name appears at the foot of each walk description. The coordinator is not a leader, and members should not expect to be led on a club walk. We aim to encourage self-confidence and self-reliance on the hills, with experienced members helping those less experienced, if required. The onus is on members to provide relevant information to the coordinator. This will aid organization and safety on the hill. It is essential that all members maintain good communication (before the walk, on and off the hill and at the end of the walk), behave responsibly and exercise their duty of care and awareness of others.

Nevis Hillwalking Club Programme 4Q20

If you are unable to contact the coordinator or if no coordinator is listed for an event, please call, text or email the Programme Convenor. See details above.

Checking Arrangements and Walk Details Further information about the walks can be obtained by studying the map and referring to the many guidebooks available for our region. Information about routes, weather and avalanche conditions will be found on the web. See our website for links. To check arrangements and discuss details for any walk, please contact the coordinator. Let the coordinator know what you want to do, either before the day of the walk or at the meeting point. Members doing through routes must ensure they make their own arrangements for transport at the end of the day.

Safety and Equipment Remember that safety is your responsibility. Read the Code of Practice, found in the Club Handbook on our website. It contains a list of appropriate clothing and equipment that all members should have on the hill. Attention is drawn to the need for crampons and ice axe in winter. Please ensure you are fit enough on the day to complete the route you want to do, under the prevailing weather conditions.

After the Walk We aim to meet and socialise in a convenient inn or cafe in the area. If your day’s schedule is time- constrained, please tell the coordinator, and be prepared to use your own transport.

Suggestions for walks in future programmes are welcome and original routes are much appreciated. However, routes gleaned from sources such as guide books and websites are perfectly acceptable and members should not hesitate to let the programme convenor know which walks they would like to see included.

Walks and Events Programme Details — October to December 2020

Saturday 3rd October Maps LR41 and EX392 Glen Nevis Sgurr a’ Mhaim (1099m, Munro) – peak of the large rounded hill An unconventional ascent of this prominent hill, which occupies a commanding position in Glen Nevis. *Option to explore the seldom-visited Coire a’ Mhail. Start from the Upper Falls car park at the end of the public road in Glen Nevis at NN167691. Head E on the footpath though the Nevis Gorge and continue to the Wire Bridge. Cross the bridge and head WNW up through deciduous woodland to reach a spur above the tree line at NN1742468535. Head SW up the spur, turning S up steeper and rockier ground to the summit of Creag nan Eunex, 483mlr. Continue S up a steep rocky slope to the tip of a NE orientated spur at 740m alt, NN1719367756. Head SW along the spur, almost level at first, curving S and rising steeply on rocky ground between Coire Sgorachex to the W and Coire nan Cnamhex to the E. The spur terminates on a ring contourex, 960m alt, NN1678567065, overlooking the vast expanse of the magnificent Coire a’ Mhail. The summit of Sgurr a’ Mhaim lies 450m SW of here, a climb of 150m up a steep rocky ridge. Descend W at first, soon curving N around the rim of Coire Sgorach. A rough path may be found, which facilitates a sustained, steep descent NW to Achriabhach. Transport required. 6 mins from start. *To return via Coire a’ Mhail: From the summit of Sgurr a’ Mhaim, return NE down the ridge to a shallow col, alt 956mex, just SW of the aforementioned ring contour. Locate the stalkers’ pathex and follow it S, contouring along the headwall below the rim of the corrie. After about 700m, the gradient of the slope below the path eases, facilitating a descent E to the floor of the corrie. Follow the main burn N downstream until it enters a gorge at the foot of the spur of Cnoc Reamharex. Climb E up the spur to reach the crest of the NW ridge of An Gearanach at a level spur below the crags, NN184677. Locate the stalkers’ path and follow it down to Glen Nevis. Cross the foot of the Steall Falls, regain the outward route at the Wire Bridge and follow it back to the start. 8km, 1000m ascent From an original suggestion by Gavin Theobald *12km, 1160m ascent Coordinated by Andrew Gilbert

If this is not exciting enough, it may be extended to include the Munro Top of and the descent of its steep SE ridge with scrambling opportunities. Start from the layby at Altnafeadh, NN220563. Head N up the WHW, the Devil’s Staircase, to a cairn at its highest point. A faint path leads NE to the nearby summit of Beinn Bheag. Return to the cairn and follow a path W up to the summit of Stob Mhich Mhartuin. Continue WNW, dipping slightly before climbing the SE flank of Sron ‘a Choire Odhair-bhig, a prominent ridge. Head W around the rim of Coire Odhar-morex and up to the summit of A’ Chailleach. Descend SW following the rim of Coire Mhorairex, curving NW down to a col, 765mex then up to the summit of Sron Garbh. Descend WSW to the next col, 816mex. *Turn SE and descend into Coire an Ruighex to finish at Allt-na-reighlr. Transport required at NN173567, 6 minutes from start. *To include Am Bodach, stay on the ridge and climb SW to its summit, 943m. Descend its SE ridge, easy-angled at first but soon steepens to a rocky ridge with some exposed sections and scrambling. Finish at Allt-na-reighlr as above. Alternatively, from the summit return to the 816mex col and descend by Coire an Ruighex as above. 11km, 848m ascent Suggested by Andrew Gilbert *12km, 975m ascent Coordinated by Ken Stevenson

Sunday 11th October Maps LR50/51 and OL48 or EX378 Glen Lochay Creag Mhor (1047m, Munro) - big rock Beinn Heasgarnich (1078m, Munro) - sheltering or peaceful hill Two large, remote hills set in the wilderness between the heads of Glen Lyon and Glen Lochay. Start from the end of the public road just beyond Kenknock Farm, NN465364. Climb north on the rough road that goes over to Glen Lyon, but after about one km, turn left on to the upper track, heading SW*. Follow it for 5km to the bridge over the Allt Bad a' Mhaimex below a damex. Leve the track and climb W up the slope, gentle at first, becoming steeper with rocky band, to reach the crest of the spur Sron nan Eun. Turn NW and continue to its summit, 836mex. Continue to climb NW on a narrowing ridge to reach the summit of Creag Mhor. Descend WNW for 400m to avoid steep ground on the N aspect, curving NE below the crags to reach broad, watery col at Lochan na Baintighearnaex at about 650m alt. A shorter day would omit the Top and the second Munro, reversing the ascent. The descent N across boggy and featureless moorland would be more arduous than the easy walking over the peaks. Omitting Meall Garbh only would save about 2km and 85m ascent. 17km, 1101m ascent Suggested and coordinated by Andrew Gilbert

Saturday 26th December Maps LR41 and EX392 Kinlochleven Glas Bheinn (792m, Corbett) – grey hill An isolated hill in remote country giving a panorama of grand views. Start at the Grey Mare’s Tail CP, NN187622. Follow the path that leads to the Waterfall for approximately 200m. At a junction, NN1877462367, take a right fork and follow a good path heading NE. It climbs up through woodland on a ridge then across the slopes of Meall an Doire Dharaich to reach the track at NN208634. Follow this E for 500m only, then right fork on to a good path leading to a small dam at the pipeline intake. Cross the dam, turn NE on to a fair path along the S side of Loch Eilde Mor. The path climbs gradually E, diverging from the loch and after about 3.5Km, arrives on the spur of Meall na Cruaidhe, alt 560m. Turn NE and climb to the summit of Glas Bheinn. Return to Meall na Cruaidhe. Head SW down into Coire na Duibhe to reach the pipeline where it takes a sharp bend below a small damex and intake.
