PASTORAL STAFF "God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every Reverend Edward J. Quinlan name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and Pastor on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2: 9 - 11) Reverend Matthew E. Cannon Parochial Vicar FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT In each of the three Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke),

after Jesus’ baptism by John, Jesus is reported to have gone to the desert to Deacon Joseph J. Wrabel fast and pray for 40 days. In each case, while in the desert, Jesus is tempted Permanent Deacon by the devil. Matthew and Luke give more detail than Mark does, but each one tells how the devil tempts Jesus in the desert. In Matthew, as in Luke, the Deacon Jerome T. Foerster devil presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil tempts Jesus to use his Permanent Deacon power to appease his hunger; he tempts Jesus to put God’s promise of protection to the test; and he offers Jesus all of the kingdoms of the world if MASSES Jesus will worship the devil. In each case, Jesus resists the temptation, Weekends: rebuking the devil with words from Scripture. Saturday Vigil5:00 p.m. The account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert is filled with allusions Sunday8:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m., and parallels to the , including the story of the people of Israel. 12:00 noon, 6:00 p.m. The Israelites spent 40 years wandering in the desert in Exodus, for example, Weekdays: and Jesus spends 40 days in the desert. As the Israelites were tempted (Weekday schedule subject to during the Exodus, so too is Jesus tempted. change - please see inside bulletin) Each temptation offers insight into both God and the human condition. Mon-Thu.6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. Jesus’ rejection of the temptations shows that he will not put God to the test. Friday..6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. Grounding himself on the word and authority of Scripture, Jesus rebukes the Saturday8:30 a.m. devil, confident in God’s protection and faithfulness. As we start our journey through Lent, our Sunday readings call us to CONFESSIONS adopt the same confidence that Jesus had in the face of temptation: God’s Saturday9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. word alone will suffice; God’s promise of protection can be trusted; God alone 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. is God. - Excerpted from Sunday Connection, Loyola Press Visit us on the web at www.HolyNameOfJesus.com/Parish First Sunday of Lent March 1, 2020
