September 2011 ISSUE 6 CATCLUB NEWS UK NEWSLETTER OF FELIS BRITANNICA - THE FEDERATION OF CLUBS REPRESENTING FIFE IN THE UK Cat Club News Garden of England Show Grantham Sept 11th This was the 2nd show to be held in Grantham and was once again well attended. The judges were: Lone Lund from Denmark Rolf Voehringer from Switzerland Gerardo Fraga from Spain Picture of the Judges Martin Sanda from Czechoslovakia It was the first time in the UK for Gerardo and although the others have been here before, they have not done so very often so it was good to have some different opinions.

We had a number of celebrations at the show this year with the 30th Anniversary of the Breed, two exhibitors - Linda Wells with Starpaws Enzo Furrari () and Anne Jones with Coonflakes Cara Mia (Maine Coon) celebrating their gaining their Supreme Titles. Also Nick Chapman’s Birthday, so there was plenty of cake to go around too.

For the second time this year we also had exhibitors travel from mainland Europe which bodes well for next year when the travel scheme changes.

The Main winners were: picture enzo

Best Category II Siberian Fluffytyke Samson Best Category III Burmilla Gem’s Snowflake Best Category IV Siamese Roamanbay Lady Gaga

Overall Best of the Best was the stunning Siberian Fluffytyke Samson, Bred by Christine Campion and owned by Lorraine Brown.

This was Lorraine’s last Show in the UK (and her first Best in Show win) as she is departing these shores for Bulgaria where she will hopefully continue to show her beautiful cats in FIFE shows over there. Good Luck Lorraine and keep in touch.

I believe this was the first such major win for a Siberian in the UK so congratulations all round. It is great to see so many being shown at FB shows in the UK now. Picture of cupcakes © Mandix. www.mandix.dk/photo Garden of England Show Grantham Sept 11th - The Winners Gallery!

Felis Britannica editor @felisbritannica.co.uk We asked for articles for the newsletter and Andy Bishop sent us this item on a new breed to the UK. Hopefully Andy will be bringing them to FB shows in the future. The Khao Manee My wife, Sue, and I have owned rescue cats for over 20 years then in 2009 we decided to import our first pedigree cat. In July 2010 Balina, a Siberian forest cat joined our household. Later that year Sue was reading an article in a magazine entitled Hidden Treasure; Sue suggested that I read the article which was about ’s best kept secret, the Khao Manee cats, and the fourth natural breed from Thailand. The literal translation of Khao Manee is White Gem; these beautiful cats have a rich history in Thailand and have been mentioned in the Tamra Maew (ancient book of cat poems). The Khao Manee is a solid white, odd eyed or even eyed, medium sized cat of robust type, with medium bone structure, good muscular development, possessing a solid look along with balance and proportion. The neck, legs, body and tail are neither short nor elongated. They are not extreme in any way. Males will be proportionately larger than females. The skin is pink in colour. Temperament is outgoing, extremely friendly and sociable. Although somewhat vocal at times they are not aggressive We decided to join the Khao Manee cat club (www.kmcc.co.uk) and in November 2010 we went along to the GCCF Supreme Show where we saw the Khao Manee and met Chrissy Kinabalu Ba Rom Dara of Snowtrees Russell and Tina Turner from the KMCC. Chrissy and Tina are responsible for introducing the breed into the UK and are the founder members of the KMCC. After spending some time talking with them both and having a look at the cats on show we asked about owning a female for breeding, Tina had a suitable girl available and in January 2011 Dara became the latest feline to join our household. We now have plans to import a male cat that will hopefully be joining us later this year. He will be a valuable asset to the breeding program as he is a bi colour Khao Manee. These coloured cats are important, and are used in our breeding program, being mated back to white Khao Manees. The Khao Manee Cat Club is dedicated to promoting this breed here in the UK and internationally. Working with fellow breeders from the USA the Khao Manee has now gained preliminary new breed status with TICA and the club will also be pursuing for recognition with Fife and GCCF. The club is also actively encouraging research into deafness in white cats, although the incident of deafness in Khao Manees is reported to be fairly rare. For more information about the Khao Manee and the work done by the club you can visit the KMCC website (www.kmcc.co.uk) or come along to the GCCF Supreme show in November this ChaWee (Thai for “beautiful”) year where the club will be exhibiting the breed.
