Adopting a critical/reflexive methodology, it begins by examining how past research has been framed through the object of study of gender transgression (transness). It demonstrates that this focus has limited the scope of policies considered: which policies are discussed, what is said about them, and how they are evaluated. In order to move forward, the dissertation proposes the concept of policy encounters, that is, contact between policy users and policy. This notion is developed by examining trans people's encounters with housing, social assistance, refugee, and trans-specific policies (e.g. civil status). Based on 30 one-on-one interviews, this review expands the scope (breadth and depth) of what is considered in relation to trans people and policy, uncovers new points of evaluation, and re-examines political priorities. All in all, policy encounters offer a much better perspective of trans people's policy landscape than gender transgression. Finally, this dissertation highlights the skills and strategies adopted by trans people to navigate complex and imperfect policies. As a whole, the project moves towards offering policy advice to policy users. iii Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to thank all the interview participants that trusted me with their stories (including those who chose the following pseudonyms: Josie, Alex, Hélène, Teresa, Simone, Chantal, Gwyneth, and Daniel). Galloway, Ph.D. Dean, Honors College Abstract: Gender expressive fashion is a way of dress where individuals can show what gender role they are filling that day. Someone who identifies as gender-fluid may change their role every day because they do not identify with any one sex. Individuals who classify themselves as gender-neutral do not identify with any sex; they can be considered unisex or genderless. An androgynous person exhibits characteristics from both sexes, and this can be shown through gender expression as well as sexual expression. A transgendered individual is someone whose gender identity is different from their assigned sex at birth. Over the past few years there has been an increasing acceptance for these different gender expressions, and with that has come a large fashion movement. Through history different gender expressive fashions have been popular trends with the masses; and through my research I aim to uncover if the current fashion movement will repeat history and fade away or, if this is a new social reality that will forever change gender expression. In order to do this, I will first define four different gender expressions, and then research the historical fashion trends for each category, followed by the current fashion for the different expressions.

In order to identify the roles of two sex worker organizations (Durjoy and Nari Mukti) and to develop the recommendations for them, I conducted my MA thesis in Bangladesh in 2009. In Bangladesh, there is a need for more research on social issues related to HIV/AIDS. Hence, this study’s exploration of both stigma and AIDS issues is valuable. To collect information on these issues, I interviewed eight individual sex workers and conducted six focus group discussions; in total there were 39 participants.

    Trans Justice and the Law: From Then to Now, From There to Here: A Conversation between Dr. Viviane Namaste and Dalia Tourki ON THE MARGINS OF LEGAL CHANGE PUBLIC CONFERENCE KEYNOTE* Viviane Namaste and Dalia Tourki The following is an edited transcription of the keynote presentation at the SSHRC- funded conference On the Margins of Trans Legal Change. This public conference was hosted by McGill University’s Faculty of Law and Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies, in partnership with Thompson Rivers University’s Faculty of Law. The keynote presentation was a conversation between Dr. Viviane Namaste and Dalia Tourki, where they asked each other questions. Keynote Speakers Dr. Viviane Namaste (VN), Professor, Simone de Beauvoir Institute, Concordia University, Montréal. Dalia Tourki (DT), Former Advocate and Public Educator at the Centre for Gender Advocacy, Montreal, and a board member of AGIR (LGBTQ Action with Migrants and Refugees), Montreal. She coordinated research projects, organized marches, published articles, gave numerous conferences, helped introduce a trans rights bill, and spearheaded a lawsuit to advance trans rights in Quebec. Dalia is currently a law student at the Faculty of Law, McGill University. Introduction VN: We are really excited to be here tonight.
