INTRODUCTION

The John Trotwood Moore Family Papers, Addition, span the years from 1849 through 1957. This collection is largely correspondence between Mr. John Trotwood Moore and his wife, Mary Daniel Moore. There is additional correspondence relating to other family members such as Elizabeth Brown Daniel, the mother of Mrs. Mary Daniel Moore. Correspondence between Mary Daniel Moore and T. S. Stribling also appears. Other materials found in this collection include family photographs, notes, gift cards, picture postcards, a notebook, a eulogy and autobiographical sketch pertaining to Elizabeth Brown Daniel, newspaper clippings pertaining to the Cole Younger family, a manuscript of the biography of Alvin York, and Tennessee Historical Committee records. This addition to the John Trotwood Moore Papers resides in four Hollinger boxes, measuring two cubic feet. Mrs. Whitford R. Cole, Jr., and Mrs. Joel M. Whitney donated an addition in 1967, and Mrs. Cole donated a further addition in 1971. This collection is also available on microfilm with the exception of Box 5. There are no restrictions on the use of materials in this collection. SCOPE AND CONTENT

The John Trotwood Moore Papers, Addition, spanning the years 1894-1944, is an addition to the John Trotwood Moore Papers processed in 1964. This collection contains primarily letters from 1898-1900, from John Trotwood Moore to Mary B. Daniel, prior to their marriage. This addition also includes material of particular interest relating to the Cole Younger brothers. It appears from the donor agreement correspondence that Mrs. Mary Daniel Moore was related to the Cole Younger family, perhaps through marriage. The correspondence folder for Cole and Jim Younger contains 37 items that includes their personal letters, telegrams, and postcards from 1901-1914. Clippings of the Younger brothers include several newspaper obituaries of Cole Younger. The Younger family photographs include a group photograph of Henrietta, Bob, Jim, and Cole Younger, Capt. Thomas Coleman Younger, and a watercolor entitled “Liz Brown and Retta Younger, 1865.” Moore family photographs include Mame B. Daniel, Judge John Moore, and “Elmcrest,” the birthplace of JTM located in Marion, Alabama. Biographical sketches and genealogical information appear in Register Number 8, John Trotwood Moore Papers. Box 5 includes a wide variety of correspondence. Of note are the personal letters to Mary Daniel Moore from her children and grandchildren, Adam G. N. Moore, Merrill Moore, Hester Moore, and Leslie Moore. These letters include family and friend news. Also included are various invitations, newspaper clippings, a Tennessee flag lapel pin, and Mary Daniel Moore’s research on historic locations in Tennessee for an illustrated map that was to be created. This folder holds an example of the map. This box was a later addition and therefore does not appear on microfilm with the original collection. CONTAINER LIST
