Have you seen our website? www.hihs.org.uk - 1 - FOREWORD I started the FOREWORD last year by remarking that it had been a roller coaster. I had no idea that this year would push the previous 12 months into the shade!

Financially we have fared very well yet again, Maggie Martin having produced no less than £3425, which, as many of you will know, helps to reduce the losses on our Shows. A special mention for Steven Schrier, who has promised ongoing Sponsorship of £100 per year. Thank you Maggie and Steven.

During the past year Sue Varley and Pat Burden have emerged within the Trading Centre set up as valuable assets, together with the guidance, assistance and encouragement of Martin Clark, our Trading Hut has been transformed by them, as has the compost shed.

This important and necessary work was recognised by the President Ron Duffield who gave his award to Pat Burden, her face was a picture, she was so modest in her moment of triumph.

We still suffer from those who offer advice on what we should be doing, but unfortunately they do not come forward to volunteer.

Currently we have the following vacancies: Chief Steward to replace John Lark, please give him a call on (023) 9246 3538, Web Site Manager to replace Norman Newton, please contact Norman on (023) 9235 5522, Holiday Organiser, give me a call on (023) 9246 8789, finally perhaps the most urgent of all, Trading Centre Manager, kindly call Martin Clark on (023) 9246 4493.

Finally we are changing our venue for the Shows to Hayling College, so on Saturday 28th March 2020 you need to go to the College. We regret having to move but the car parking at the Community Centre has become totally impracticable, By moving we will have a total of 95 car parking spaces, and no fear of Traffic Wardens handing out tickets for parking violations.

Our Car Park at the Trading Centre remains a disgrace, although we had been promised that it would be hard surfaced by October 2017, we are hopeful of meeting with the Deputy leader of the Council to investigate just what can be done.

As usual my wife Ann joins me in wishing you all a Healthy and Happy New Year. Bill Biggs, Chairman

- 11 - Horticultural Society Year Book 2020 - Alan Mak MP Message of Support As one of the best supported groups on the Island, this year I am delighted to once again continue supporting the Hayling Island Horticultural Society. As we enter a new decade, I am so pleased that the Society keeps going from strength to strength and continues to be a showcase for the very best that Hayling Island has to offer. One of the highlights of my year is coming to present prizes at the various shows and I look forward to doing so again, seeing the diverse range of plants, vegetables and other items that will be on display. It was an honour to be re-elected to represent Hayling Island in December and I’ll continue working hard for residents all year round. This year will also see the return of my three popular community events - the Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair on Friday 13th March from 10am to 2pm at the Havant Leisure Centre, the Havant Constituency Small Business Awards; and my Community Groups and Older Persons Information Fair. I’m also giving away free flags for local residents living in the constituency, to display pride in our country. Both the Union Flag and the St George’s Flag are available. You can find out more details about all of these by visiting my website at alanmak.org.uk If you would like to invite me to a community event, then please email my office [email protected] . To stay in touch with my work the please follow me via Facebook and Twitter or sign-up for my newsletter.

- 43 - HAYLING ISLAND SALVER Competition Rules

1. The Hayling Island Salver Class is open to all current members of the Hayling Island Horticultural Society.

2. The Hayling Island Salver class is for a collection of three types of vegetables taken from the following list of nine. The quantity of each vegetable required for the collection is given in brackets: Onions (3), Potatoes (3), Any Other Root Vegetable (3), Beans (6 pods), Peas (6 pods), Tomatoes (6), Courgettes (3), Lettuce (2), Sweet peppers (2). Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points. This is split into three sections as follows: 7 points for size, shape and colour 7 points for condition, 6 points for uniformity. The overall mark will therefore be out of a total of 60.

3. All vegetables are to be displayed for effect. The vegetables must be displayed within an area measuring 450mm by 600mm, without bending any part of them. No part of any exhibit may exceed the size of the tray. A tray or board measuring 450mm by 600mm, can be used to display the vegetables, or the area can simply be marked on the staging. Where a tray has a lip or edge, it is the internal measurements that must not exceed 450mm by 600mm.

4. A black cloth is permitted, and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing, but no other foliage or accessories, such as plates, sand, rings etc, will be allowed. Onion tops may be tied or whipped using raffia or string.

5. The winner of the Hayling Island Salver class will receive a £10 Hayling Island Horticulture voucher. The runner-up will receive a £5 voucher. Third place will receive a £3 voucher.

THE GROWING TOGETHER PROJECT This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the foundation of this Project. The Society, through the Treasurer, ensures the safe control of the monies raised by our fundraising. Since the start of the Project I have been supported by Ray Jones, and I am truly grateful for all his contributions, particularly with his dealings at the College. At this stage it would be remiss of me not to pay my sincere thanks to Tony Athill who has so ably looked after Mengham Junior School. This year has seen a shift of emphasis, in that we have become very involved in attempting to rescue The Stead and Ritchie Memorial Garden. It is situated opposite the rear of Sainsbury’s, and butts on to the Solicitors’ office. Lesley Tyrrell, plus a number of volunteers, is clearing part of the Garden, and planting various plants, some of which are flowers and the others, shrubs. At this time I am raising the help of further volunteers so that we can finally clear the Garden, and restore it to its original state. Thus far we have removed in excess of 700 bags of rubbish, weeds, and so on. We are indebted to Norse, or rather their lorry driver, who removes the full bags! Now the appeal, a really simple plea! CAN YOU PLEASE JUST SPARE 1 HOUR A WEEK OR WHENEVER TO HELP US CLEAR THE GARDEN MORE QUICKLY? We are not tying you down, for instance you might only be able to give an hour once a month or every two weeks, you will still be warmly welcomed. Just ring the following: Lesley Tyrrell: 07952 809344 Bill Biggs: 023 9246 8789 Ray Jones: 023 9236 5964 We look forward to hearing from you. Bill Biggs

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We should like to thank all contributors to this schedule, and also everyone concerned with the organisation and support of our shows. - 57 - THE TRADING CENTRE

Your Trading Centre offers an extensive range of gardening supplies at very favourable prices. Items not on display may be specially ordered from the catalogue on request at the counter. Help in running the Centre is always needed. Volunteers should contact the Trading Manager - if you can spare a little of your time for the HAYLING benefit of the Society.
