2 Celebrating RAF Horne, a vital element of the D-Day Landings

This was the only small grass airfield in constructed in 1942 and used in 1944 for D-Day Landings. It was known as an advanced landing ground consisting of two grass runways (one each side of Bones Lane) and a perimeter track, which you can just see today, with storage and tented accommodation.

There were three squadrons and 60 planes of spitfires and hurricanes:

• 103 squadron consisted of pilots and ground crew from the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand • 303 squadron was entirely manned by Polish pilots • 402 squadron was entirely Canadian The first sortie was in May 1944 to soften up the enemy in Normandy, one of th the first squadrons to attack and back up on D-Day, 6 June 1944.

We did manage to speak to one of the pilots about 25 years ago to get some background information, but he was only operational for one week before advancing to an airfield in Normandy.

He did confirm that a Bofors anti-aircraft gun was situated on the bend of Bones Lane and that all the pilots were flying six sorties a day to support the D-Day advancing forces.

He did reminisce that whilst he was on operation he was shot in the foot, so he thought he would go to hospital upon his return. To his surprise, and while the ground crew were re-arming and refuelling his plane, his foot was bandaged up and he was helped into the cockpit to fly again, back to Normandy and yet another raid.

In 1994 Horne Parish Council celebrated its centenary year. To commemorate this, it was suggested that we erect the airfield commemorative plaque. The Parish Council agreed to this and it was carried out.

There was a commemorative parade, with Bones Lane closed to traffic. Over 50 people attended the service, and an RAF band also attended.

This piece was written by Graham Marks to commemorate the 75 th anniversary of the D-day Landings and the part that our parish played in it.

5 Editorial Hello again friends, and welcome to this, our Autumn 2019 edition of Community News , bringing you the local news and information you need. Firstly, as always, we need to say a big ‘thank you’ to our readers, advertisers and distributors, as there simply wouldn’t be a Community News without these guys.

As the sun beats down, I’m trying to soak up as many of the rays as possible. Let’s be honest, when we get a hot spell in this country we’re never sure how long it’s going to last (or what to do), so top up tans while the sun shines. Then, a bit later, a) complain about the heat, b) worry about being sunburned, c) get annoyed about having to constantly water your garden.

Lingfest rocked and rolled Our very own ‘Party in the Park’ seemingly never fails to deliver a good time to all who attended, and so it was again this year. The music was fantastic, the food superb, and atmosphere as good as it’s ever been. Once again, we send our love and thanks to the organisers of the event, who spend months and months bringing together the event (and the local community!).

LPC Grant As I’m sure all you guys know, Community News is produced on a wholly voluntary basis, with the entire editorial team and distributors providing their services free of charge. We essentially rely on our loyal and very helpful advertisers to cover our printing costs, which they almost always do, and we’re very grateful for them for that.

So, it was lovely to receive another grant from Lingfield Parish Council, for the princely sum of £800. These types of contributions are a real help to our running costs, and give us a modicum of financial security. So, once again a big ‘thank you’ to LPC.

Meals on Wheels needs you Meals on Wheels offers a valuable service to the older residents of Lingfield and the surrounding districts, but it needs more clients to make the system cost effective. If you think you can help, or know or someone who could benefit from the service, please call 07504 481 289 or 01342 843 098 .

Parking at the surgery We’re all aware that parking in and around Lingfield can be a little awkward, and sometimes there seems to be just too many cars for the available space.

The problem seems to be particularly acute at the surgery, where on several occasions recently there have been vehicle collisions in the car park, caused mainly by limited visibility as a result of inconsiderate parking.

6 The partners at the surgery have asked us to make it clear that the layout of the car park was changed several months ago to protect vulnerable and frail patients. As such, they ask that vehicles are only parked in clearly marked spaces. Parking anywhere else can cause a serious inconvenience.

We’d like to remind patients that when car parking spaces are full there is three hours of free parking in the Gun Pit Road council car park, located just a three- minute walk away, just behind Boots pharmacy.

Flu jabs: it’s never too early And staying with the surgery, it’s worth mentioning that it’s never too early to start planning for your winter flu jab. If Balsam Hill can start advertising its (pretty realistic and highly recommended) Christmas trees on July 20 th , Lingfield can start its flu protection procedures in the late summer.

Lingfield Surgery would like to remind all patients aged 65 or over, and other at risk groups, to please book your appointment for your free flu vaccination. Please contact the surgery in late August/early September and it will be happy to book an appointment for you.

New member of the team We’re also happy to welcome a new member to our Community News team, Tracy Lamb. She’s already proved herself extremely useful by transcribing several contributions, and we’re happy to welcome her to our little team.

Join the Gang Fancy yourself as a bit of a writer? Want to come and join the team and help put together this wonderful little publication? Anything about developments within the local area make you angry or happy?

Please put pen to paper and tell us about it, as we’re always happy to receive contributions of any sort.

We’d also like to ask if anybody out there would like to help us with Community News ’s distribution and delivery? We could certainly use some more deliverers, so if you could spare a few hours every 12 weeks or so, please get in touch.

That just leaves us to say once again a Great Big Thank You to you, our readers, advertisers, contributors, deliverers, friends, and associates.

Enjoy that late summer sun, and we’ll see you guys again in November.

8 Your Letters The answer is NOT blowin’ in the wind Dear Community News When I travel into and other major cities, I often discover I am entering a “nuclear-free zone”. I don’t know what it means – don’t the residents use electricity from nuclear power stations – but I’m sure whoever put the signs up meant well. Perhaps they just don’t want to be wiped out by a nuclear bomb (very understandable). It makes me wonder what we could declare Lingfield free-from – dog mess, litter, aircraft noise. But they aren’t the evil I have in mind.

My idea would bring peace to the community, reduce energy consumption and improve personal fitness, all at once – and for free. No, not mindfulness days in Jenner’s Field while pedalling bicycles connected to the national grid. Nor is it giving up the Friday-night curry in favour of a communal walk in the country. My idea is better than either of those. My idea is this: why don’t we become Britain’s first leaf-blower-free community? At a stroke, we would reduce noise levels across the village. We would stop all those inefficient little engines from pumping fumes into the atmosphere. And, by taking to our rakes and wheel barrows, we would improve our personal fitness levels. Leaf blowers seem to have been designed to be as noisy as possible. But, above all, they aren’t actually any good at the task they are supposed to perform. Sure, they blow many of the leaves around but wet ones remain where they lie – stuck to the grass. Once in piles, if not immediately removed, the wind soon redistributes them. They are slower than doing the task by hand. It’s horribly loud, makes an unpleasant noise and goes on for hours. If your aim is simply to clear up leaves, there is a simpler and better way. And Lingfield would be famous for its initiative, tourists would come here for the peace, businesses would flourish and the residents would be rich – all through this one simple act!” Ian Jones

Use our lovely Lingfield village facilities Dear All, At one time everyone knew everyone in our village. Now we have more houses, we need a bigger surgery, chemist and school. We have new faces which we welcome but a lot of people do not know what goes on in Lingfield & Dormansland Community Centre and The Jennings Hall, which has so much to offer.

Lunch Club, Meals on Wheels and Darby & Joan are getting less members. Lunch Club is held on a Tuesday, all fresh meals, followed at 1.30pm by Darby

9 & Joan, which is short of men and women. You may say it’s not for you, how do you know until you try? Pop into the Community Centre to see what is going on, there is something for everyone. We’re a friendly, caring village. I’ve been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for over thirty years, lost my husband two and a half years ago, and without making so many friends, I would have been a very lonely person. Especially if you are on your own or at a loose end, get involved with the community, everyone is nice and friendly, and particularly don’t be alone, come and join something, give it a go. If we don’t use our facilities, we will lose them. Without volunteers to help, you would not be reading this Community News today. Yours, as a friend, Mahala Peskett.

Farewell Sarah and Robin Marlow Dear Community News , Can we say a huge ‘thank you’ to friends, neighbours and colleagues who gave us a great send off at the end of May in The Star. Robin and I had lived in Lingfield for nearly 30 years and have had both our girls, Kerry and Kate, grow up here. It’s a wonderful village.

I’ve worked at Lingfield Primary School the whole time and loved getting to know so many children and parents. Rob did a stint in the sorting office and, latterly, spent the winter pushing the Parish barrow around! We’ve moved on to pastures new, retiring to central France, but will always remember with great fondness the friends we made and of course. ‘Lovely Lingfield’. Love and best wishes to all, Sarah and Robin Marlow

Darby and Joan Club’s educational activities Dear Community News , On the 8 th April, the Derby and Joan Club were invited by the six- and seven- year olds and the teachers at Lingfield Primary School for afternoon tea. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the teachers, children and mums for putting on a lovely tea, consisting of sandwiches, cakes (which the children helped to make) and fruit on sticks.

We all enjoyed the afternoon, the children danced then got us to dance with them. At the end, we had lots of hugs which was lovely, so many thanks to all of you who were involved, especially the children. Kind regards, Mahala Peskett.

10 Lingfield Horticultural Society

July 2019 So far, this summer has been a lot better for our gardens than last year. May was very dry but June came in with some very changeable weather including plenty of rain – not very good for holiday makers, but I don’t hear many Affiliated to The Royal gardeners complaining! Horticultural Society and The National Dahlia Society Now at the beginning of July everywhere is looking very green and fresh and we are expecting our two forthcoming shows to be full to bursting with masses of wonderful flowers and vegetables as a result.

The first of these shows was our Summer Show, our biggest show of the year, on Saturday 20 th July in the Community Centre. You wouldn’t have received this edition of Community News by the time this show takes place, but it will have been well advertised so we hope you were able to attend, and have a good look at what our members have produced. If you did, maybe it inspired some of you to try your hand in one of our shows in the future.

We don’t have a meeting in August but we will be back on Saturday, 7 th September with our Autumn and Dahlia Show. This is an evening show with a talk entitled “Try Something Different” by Paul Grimmer, to entertain us while the judging is taking place. The talk starts at 8pm, but if you are exhibiting, staging is between 6.45 and 7.45pm.

You don’t need to register your entries in advance for this show, just bring them along on the evening and have a go. If you’re interested I can let you have a copy of the show schedule with all the details – just give me a call on the number below. This show will also be held in the Community Centre.

At our meeting on Friday, October 4 th , Graham Spencer will be giving us an illustrated talk, “From Cuttings to Garden Centre”. Graham has worked in the horticulture industry for more than thirty years and in this talk he looks at the supply chain for ornamental horticulture, following a plant from its earliest stages of production to the point where you pick it up from your local garden centre. This meeting will be held in the Jennings Hall, starting at 8pm.

If you would like to join our Society, or find out more about it, please contact me, Alan Reynolds, Membership Secretary, on 01342 833 155 .

11 Down on the Allotment: heed the call of the Lingfield hunter-gatherer

What a season so far! We’ve had the hottest June day since Moses came down from Mount Sinai carrying his tablets (other religions are available) and 22 years rain in one hour, apparently. Either way, the crops are loving it. Everything seems so much bigger this year and, thanks to such a mild winter, there are a lot more bugs about.

Broad beans were a huge success! They seemed to tower above our heads and it was a battle to pick them whilst they were still an emerald green and hadn’t turned into leathery mealy beans. Broad beans, onions and smoky bacon must rank as one of my favourite combinations.

Strawberries too were plentiful and, as the plants and the weeds had put on so much growth, the birds failed to find many of them. Ideally, you should protect strawberries with nets but unless you have a way of suspending the netting a good foot above the plants, all you accomplish is creating a landing pad for the greedy birds whose weight pushes down the netting and deftly lowers their beaks within pecking reach of the fruit. Netting is one of my bugbears, when the weeds grow into it or it snags into itself then I am apt to pull it all up and just let the birds have their share.

Salad crops tend to bolt as soon as the weather turns hot and we’ve had many plantings of lettuces, mixed leaves, and rocket. We have cropped it over again, bringing the leaves home, washing them and invariably still discovering a slug sliding across the salad bowl.

Potatoes are cropping now, and with the rows nearest the hosepipe giving up the largest tubers, it's easy to tell which parts of the plot are watered more than others. New potatoes with butter and mint is a joy and marginally more healthy than the aforementioned broad beans and bacon.

Tomatoes and cucumbers are growing like crazy in the greenhouse with the first red tomato picked yesterday. I always like to leave the first red fruits on the vine to teach the others what is expected of them. There is actually method in this madness as the ripening fruit gives off ethylene which acts as a ripening activator for other fruit. 12 Sun ripened and warmed tomatoes taste completely different to those orange sour fruits you buy from the supermarket – and with many blight resistant varieties now available, I would advise anyone to grow some.

Everywhere I look there are crops growing. From here on the name of the game will be harvesting and storing my produce throughout the summer and into the autumn. We will be freezing, bottling, preserving and preparing for the long winter months where we will have to survive on the crops stored throughout the summer.

Of course there is always the Co-op in Lingfield but that doesn’t have quite the same primal appeal to this hunter gatherer. You’ll find me there stocking up on bacon and butter though!

Enjoy the summer!

Adrian Colombini, July 2019

People often ask me what is Sports Massage . Essentially it is deep tissue massage. The pressure is adjusted to manipulate the deeper tissue layers in the body. This is a job for a specially trained sports massage therapist. A sport massage is the manipulation of the soft tissue (muscle) in order to prevent or improve sports injuries. Deep tissue massage offers both physical and psychological benefits. Unlike other massage Techniques that focus on relaxation, deep tissue massage helps to treat muscle pain and improve stiffness. But it can still help to you unwind mentally, too. The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension, which builds up in the body's soft tissues during physical activity. Having said that most of us find that muscle stress and tension can also build up through everyday life not just sport. Desk jobs, carrying children, driving, the list is endless. I trained in Edinburgh 20 years ago and have worked with the Scotland ladies rugby team, Stewart Melville RFC and East Grinstead RFC. After having my three boys I now work for myself in the treatment room in Lingfield and Dormansland community centre. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss your requirements and book an appointment. I run clinic sessions on Wednesday mornings, Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. 19 Lingfield Parish Council News New members I am delighted to introduce two new members of Lingfield Parish Council. Ron Coleman and Cath Hearnden have joined the Council following the (non-contested) Parish Council local elections in May.

Ron, who moved to Lingfield some five years ago, previously served on and Farleigh Parish Council. He is taking a keen interest in litter, road signs, parking, crossing roads, drains and refurbishing Gun Pond.

Cath is well-known in the village for her role in running a local finance business. She also chairs the local Neighbourhood Plan team. She has become Vice- Chairman on the Parish Council.

Goals for the next four years We started our work as a new council with a discussion about goals over the next four years. We came up with nearly 20.

I won’t list them all here but they include: continuing opposition to Star Fields development; lobbying for improved parking enforcement; litter warden recruitment; inspecting and reporting blocked drains; working towards a cleaner village (road and traffic signs); supporting local businesses, and providing plants and flowers for the village.

Hanging baskets We hope you’ve noticed the lovely hanging baskets in the High Street. We had hoped to commission baskets for the whole of the commercial centre of Lingfield but, alas, we were told some of the lampposts weren’t strong enough and we were restricted to the High Street.

And finally Just to thank everyone for the support I have received as a very new Parish Council Chairman. John Cole did a brilliant job and I have big boots to fill!

Vivien Hepworth, Chairman

The parish council office is situated in Lingfield and Dormansland Community Centre and is open to the public between 10am and 12 noon on Monday to Thursday. 20 Easy listening, easy conversation with the Lingfield Evening WI

Have you thought about joining or visiting Lingfield Evening WI (LEWI)? If you are, we’re always delighted to welcome new members and visitors.

We usually meet at the Jennings Hall in Lingfield (behind the Community Centre) on the third Wednesday of each month at 8pm. Our programme varies but we usually have a speaker followed by an opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee and a chat before a short business meeting when members are updated with Surrey County Federation events and news from the National Federation.

We also organise regular Games Evenings, a ‘Crafty Ladies’ group, local walks and visits between our monthly meetings.

Speakers so far this year have included Jill Iliffe, a local artist and Lisa Carey from Doodledish in Lingfield. In March, Waitrose in the Community presented a ‘Cheese and Wine’ evening. At our Members’ meeting in April, several of our members brought along items they had made by hand, including some wonderful knitting, embroidery and quilting (see photo).

In June, Andrew Warde, a qualified Blue Badge guide, gave us a fascinating talk about the Palace of Westminster.

Future meetings: • 21 st August – Summer Social afternoon visit to Place • 18 th September – “My Grandmother was a Suffragette” by Eleanor Redshaw We’re always happy to welcome visitors to our meetings at the Jennings Hall. If you would like to find out more about LEWI please ring Jane Chitty on 01342 834 051 .

21 Dormansland Parish Council

Elections, May 2019 In the May 2019 elections all seven of our existing Parish Councillors were re-elected unopposed:

Maureen Young (Chairman) Harry Fitzgerald (Vice Chairman) Guy Kaiser-Davies David Bright Dawn Cook Judy MacKenzie-Dunn Susan Calamassi Lesley Steeds was also re-elected as our District Councillor.

Grass Cutting/Highways After pressure from our County Councillor and the Parish Council we are pleased to see that the urban grass cutting in the parish has finally been completed by Surrey County Council. The Parish Council is however very concerned at the delay and standard of grass cutting that is being provided by Surrey, despite DPC having agreed to pay for four extra cuts (2019/20). We will be taking up this issue with Surrey, and will keep you informed.

The bridge on Moor Lane will have to be rebuilt/redesigned and SCC is carrying out its assessments. The temporary traffic lights have recently been removed but may be back when further work needs to be carried out in September/October. We are still chasing SCC to clear the blocked drain that is causing water to constantly run across Wilderwick Road at the bridge over the stream.

WONDERFUL WEDDINGS St Peter and St Paul Parish Church, Lingfield

There is something rather magical about a church wedding. We hear the sound of the bells as we approach the church. We enjoy our friends and family gathered together in a very special place. We hear the regal sound of the organ and the joyous sound of hymns. We smell the fragrance of the flowers adorning the church. We witness the bride’s walk down the aisle as all turn to gaze at the beautiful dress. We watch the groom expectantly awaiting the arrival of his beloved. We smile at the excited little bridesmaids and the cheeky pageboy. We listen to the meaningful readings and witness the sacred vows. We make life-long memories with laughter and love in the churchyard.

The traditional church wedding dates back hundreds of years. In Lingfield we’re fortunate enough to have a church dating back to the year 965 with weddings taking place in this historic church from around 1300, or over 700 years!

23 Memories of Michael Wallis, a ‘Cheerful, Honest and Hard-working soldier’ From the eulogy given by Michael’s son, Ian, at Michael’s funeral

‘Lance Bombardier Wallis is a very Loyal, Cheerful, Honest and Hard-working soldier…He can be relied on to do a good job without any supervision and has proved he is fully capable of taking charge of other people.’ These are the words written in Dad’s Certificate of National Service. The attributes stated were obviously a testimony to his parents, Hellier and Ellen, raising their son from his birth at Edenbridge Hospital through to the completion of his City and Guilds at Redhill College; and importantly a foundation for building the rest of his adult life, creating an interesting tapestry of family life, involvement in many local organisations, societies and of course business. His early years were never going to be straightforward, with the outbreak of war before his fourth birthday, being evacuated in 1942 with his mother and sister Doreen to Wales while his father remained at home in the fire service. By a cruel twist of fate, soon after their return home to Newchapel Road, a bomb dropped on their road. Fortunately, the family were unharmed. Despite the turmoil of war, Dad’s education continued at Lingfield Primary School and then aged 13 at East Grinstead Grammar. He was gifted with Wallis craftsman hands, and carpentry became his professional trade, working with Head Brothers until joining his father in the family business in 1960 as the fourth generation, using his skills to produce wooden car chassis on Rolls Royce cars and the like. With the declining requirement for wheelwrighting and coach building, the family business sought a new direction, and developed into H Wallis Ltd, a garden machinery company established in 1960. New challenges for Dad, running and growing a business, managing and creating a team of employees and creating a successful business that I now have the pleasure to run. Dad was not undertaking this adventure alone: he had a beautiful and supporting wife, having married Jill in July 1965. With a generous donation of land from his dad and aunt, and lots of help and hard work, they built their own house and named it Charron, French for wheelwrights. I was born in 1968, Tina in 1970, and in due course the family grew and Dad became a grandad nine times and a great grandad three times. He loved being with children, all his life. Dad found time to involve himself in a broad spectrum of community life: he was a committee member in scouting, served on the Church Council, and (more

24 dangerously!) with the Lingfield Bonfire Society, fished with the East Grinstead Angling Society, and played darts in local leagues. He was involved with church fundraising, especially the appeal to rebuild the roof, and his longest continuous association in the village has to be with the Lingfield Bell Ringers, with whom he rang for some 50 years, having been taught while his father and uncle were ringers, and going on to teach numerous others during his 38 years as Tower Captain. He will be sadly missed by so many both young and old, near and far. He was at his hear t a re al loca l.

26 The Lingfield Nature Reserves are 25 years old and still going strong. So what’s next? Join us in saying good-bye to Sally Cole, a stalwart of Sunday morning work parties

The planning and planting of our wonderful reserves began in 1994, 25 years ago this year. Back then, the fields were horse pastures surrounded by barb wire fences with little obvious biodiversity.

So much has been achieved since then. Nearly everything you see today has been planted or constructed since. We have a safe all-weather route to school from Saxby’s Lane from Vicarage Road.

There is a bridge, an orchard, a butterfly garden, ponds, a wetland complex of ditches and scrapes, flower rich meadows, scrub, hedges and woodlands plus benches, seats and arbours.

Recently we have been presented with a new but very nice challenge. Councillor Jeremy Pursehouse, newly elected chairman of Council, has chosen our reserves to be one of two causes for his fundraising efforts for 2019-2020.

That means we need to decide upon, and then plan, some new projects for the reserves so we can use any money we raise or are given as a result of Jeremy’s support. It seems we have a potential opportunity to do even more to improve the reserves for wildlife.

We also need to support Jeremy’s efforts by organising fundraising events for the reserves ourselves. If you have ideas for this or want to get involved, feel free to contact any of the numbers below. Help from people with experience of fundraising and organising fun events would be very welcome.

Jeremy’s other chosen cause is Blanchman’s Farm, a Local Nature Reserve in the heart of . We’ve already met with members of the Blanchman’s Farm management committee and it is clear that, as a minimum, we can share our different experiences in managing a nature reserve near the centre of a village and, hopefully, help each other to make our reserves the best they can be as an asset for our respective communities.

So watch this space as we develop a programme of events and draw up a list of potential improvements.

27 The ponds under construction in Bloomers Field.

Whilst writing we would like to acknowledge the huge contribution made to the management of the reserves by our current treasurer, Sally Cole, who will be shortly moving to Devon with John, her husband, to live nearer their family. Sally has done so much for the reserves from being a stalwart at our Sunday morning work parties to doing a thousand and one management jobs.

She is a real doer and go-to person and has done everything from liaising with our mowing contractors to leading numerous pond dipping sessions with all sorts of local children’s and school groups.

We are very grateful to Sally for her tireless work for the reserves. We will miss her very much and send our best wishes to her and John in their new life in the West Country after 40 years in Lingfield.

If getting involved with the reserves appeals to you, please get in touch or come along to one of our monthly work parties and see if you enjoy it. Feel free to ring John Madden on 835 698 or Anne Richards on 870 200.

Alternatively please email enquiries@lingfieldreserves.og.uk and one of the committees will happily make contact.

Our work parties are held on the last Sunday of every month. We meet in the wildlife area outside the allotment gates ready for a 10am start.

YWI Dormansland welcomes new members, so come along

The YWI meet at The Parish Rooms at 8pm, usually on the second Tuesday of the month . Over the past few meetings we’ve enjoyed a Treasure Hunt, a talk from the RH7 Group and we’re busy getting crafty and using mostly recycled materials to make our ‘Save our Pollinators’ carnival float. A group of 18 also travelled to the West End for pizza, cocktails and to see the very funny ‘9 to 5 the Musical’. As well as our regular meetings, we also have two book groups, occasional craft club, and our Sole Sisters walking group. We regularly get tickets for local and West End shows, organise other social get-togethers, and participate in the village Carnival. Our next meetings are Tuesday 13 th August – A Ramble to Felcourt Farm , where we’ll have a tour and info from Richard Matthews then enjoy a drink or two in a cabana beside the lake. Tuesday 10 th September – Laughter and Wellbeing , and 8th October is a Night at the Movies! More details can be found on our website. We are a very friendly group and we always welcome new members – ladies of course. First meeting is free! After that, annual membership is just £42 per year (pro-rated if you haven’t been a member with us before). Where else could you get tea/coffee and cake and great company for £3.50? Interested? If you would like any further information, or would like to come along to a meeting, please contact Sue Alfrey , our membership coordinator, on 07738 247 960 .

42 CARE in East Grinstead & Lingfield charity selected for a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

CARE in East Grinstead & Lingfield has been selected as a recipient for a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. CARE is a charity which was founded in 1988 by a local group of churches as a form of outreach to the local community by giving help to elderly and infirm people in the area who have no-one else available to assist them. Most of CARE’s work in the community is in driving clients to medical appointments but it also does shopping and minor errands or help clients with gardening and small DIY jobs. Clients phone a central number a few days in advance, and the Duty Officer tries to find a volunteer who can help them. The charity is almost entirely self-funded and relies on donations from clients to meet its overheads.

The Queen’s Award is the highest honour a voluntary group can receive, equivalent to the MBE, and is given for exceptional work done by volunteer groups in their communities. Only a small number of the thousands of charities across the UK ever receive one. As a winner, CARE will receive a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed glass crystal award with the logo insignia. The award will be presented on behalf of the Queen by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex at a local ceremony.

CARE was chosen by the previous Town Mayor last year as one of his three special charities in his year of office and has shown his commitment to their work by joining them as a volunteer driver. CARE Chairman Peter Burton said, “This award is a tremendous achievement, particularly for a small charity like ours, and could not have been earned without the hard work, dedication and positive attitude of all our volunteers, whatever their role.” “We have around about 350 clients on our books and are doing over 1000 jobs a year, 95% of which involve driving people to local surgeries and hospitals or clinics throughout Sussex, Kent and Surrey,” he added.

Volunteer Manager Jackie Atwell added, “Greater demand for our services means that we are looking for more people to join our existing band of volunteers as drivers or Duty Officers. Being a CARE volunteer is very rewarding as you meet so many interesting and inspirational people and it really helps you to feel much more involved in the local community. You don’t have to be a regular church-goer to join us.”

If anyone is interested in volunteering for CARE they can find more information on www.careineastgrinstead.co.uk or phone 01342 410 086 for more information.

44 Lingfield’s Positive Birth Movement reaches out

My name is Laura Berkeley and I run The Positive Birth Movement group in Lingfield. This group is a volunteer run monthly group for families expecting babies and new parents. The maternity services are often stretched, and many places of support are reducing, such as the local children centres and baby cafes, which is why groups like ours are now so vital in the community.

The Positive Birth Movement was founded and created by a lady called Milli Hill, who has written some incredible books and created a global network of antenatal discussion support groups. These groups are run by facilitators who voluntarily fund and give their time at least once a month to run a group in their area. Each month we have a different topic of discussion and provide a comfortable safe space for pregnant women, their partners and families to come and share their thoughts, providing information to access better support and have positive birth experiences.

These groups are non-judgemental, relaxed informal sessions where many women come who don’t have support or access/funds to expensive antenatal education. We’re very lucky at Lingfield to have many members of the maternity team and other health professionals that also come along and give their free time to come and support these families at our sessions.

We run our sessions at the Community Centre in Lingfield High Street but really want to reach more people so that they know about this wonderful group and have access to support. As a volunteer I am not given any funding to support this group and do not ask for any money when people attend, although those that attend are welcome to give a small donation to help with the running costs.

The Positive Birth Movement Lingfield & Godstone The first Wednesday of every month 11am to 12.15pm at the Lingfield & Dormansland Community Centre. Expectant mums & dads warmly welcomed. Babies & children are also welcome, we have plenty of toys

FREE to attend antenatal & support group - refreshments provided. Expectant parents welcome to come and soak up positivity surrounding birth & parenthood

Mums with positive birth stories to share please join us to inspire others

47 Supporting Fairtrade in Lingfield and Dormansland and everywhere Promoting Fairtrade for producers in the Developing World And Fair Trade for Local Producers

Happy Autumn Everyone Community News is a remarkable publication covering a wide range of interesting and useful information and topics on all aspects of our community, near and far! So, from Fairtrade, Thank You . By Autumn, the summer festivities will, we hope, be happy memories of all that has been.

Fairtrade has had a presence at many events: Lingfield, and Dormansland, Parish Councils’ Annual Assemblies, LD Community Centre Coffee Morning on the 1 st Saturday each month, SS Peter & Paul Church Old Town Fair, Dormansland Primary School Sports Day, Lingfield Primary Summer Fair, Lingfield College Prep Fair, and Lingfest. We keep busy with Fairtrade, so thank you for your support.

To come, we look forward to Lingfield Mothers’ Union and LD Fairtrade Indian Summer tea, on Sunday, 8 th September at LD Community Centre, arrive 3.30 for tea at 4.00pm. All welcome . The tea sounds scrumptious with sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and cakes. There will be Fairtrade and Mothers’ Union stalls and a raffle. Tickets £7 from [email protected] or call 01342 833 994 . Please come and enjoy, it will be a lovely occasion!

In Autumn we have our Fairtrade LD AGM with Guest Speaker, details to come. th On Sunday 24 November we celebrate SS Peter & Paul Church Stir up Sunday with the Christmas Pudding event, now in its fifth year. All the ingredients for puddings, with Fairtrade fruit and spices, are prepared for you, just reserve a convenient time to come and make your puddings. Tickets can be found at [email protected] . How’s that for advance planning for Christmas!

Through Fairtrade our focus is to raise awareness of our Fairtrade farmers and producers in the developing world who send us delicious foods, beverages and products we enjoy. We were asked recently by Fairtrade Foundation UK, “Who caused the climate crisis?” It certainly wasn’t a small-scale cocoa farmer in Côte d’Ivoire or a coffee farmer in Nicaragua!

In fact, as Fairtrade farmers they are committed to protecting the local environment and lowering their carbon footprint. But they’re already suffering the worst consequences of the climate emergency. More unpredictable weather means they have to work even harder, to earn less. They ask, “Tell us how

48 Fairtrade can protect our environment?” Fairtrade with many other concerned organisations went to Westminster in June with ‘The Time is Now Climate Rally’, taking their message.

At Traidcraft they have been thinking about pollution, everywhere from the depths of the oceans to the highest reaches of our atmosphere, so how can we fight it? See www.traidcraftshop/bulletin for more information.

Also, Fairtrade Foundation UK, along with a coalition of certification schemes promoting safer pest control, announced a new free app called Pesticides and Alternatives, bringing a wealth of scientific knowledge directly to the phones of farmers and plantation managers in developing countries on non-chemical pest control alternatives for 2,700 pests and diseases. Download the app at www.cabi.org/news-and-media/2019/cabi-shares-expertise-in-new-app-to- help-reduce-reliance-on-toxic-pesticides .

Thank you for your support of products with the Fairtrade MARK. It makes all the difference.

49 Lingfield Surgery News

Flu clinics 2019 In this glorious weather, while we’re still enjoying the buzz of Novak Djokovic beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon and England’s cricketing triumph, the last thing on your minds will be flu clinics.

However, with this edition of Community News running into the start of the flu season, here we go. Lingfield Surgery would like to remind all patients aged 65 or over, and other at risk groups, to please book your appointment for your free flu vaccination.

The flu clinics are running on a selection of Saturdays in September and October but we will also have mid-week clinics, with the dates to be confirmed. Please contact the surgery in August/September and we will be happy to book your appointment.

Our nurses will also check to see if you require additional preventative treatments such as shingles vaccinations, pneumococcal vaccinations, and blood pressure checks.

We will also be running child flu clinics for children who are aged 2 and 3. Please contact the surgery to confirm that your child is eligible for the free flu vaccine and we will book your appointments.

The surgery will be sending out SMS text messages to patients who are eligible for the flu vaccination and who have their mobile number on our clinical system. Please ensure that we have your correct mobile number on our system as it is the quickest and most effective form of communication between the surgery and our patients at all times of the year.

Surgery car park Patients may not be aware of this, but the surgery car park is privately owned by the GP partners. Therefore, we have to make it clear that there is no NHS contractual requirement for surgeries to provide patient car parking .

In the last three months we have had several vehicle collisions in the car park caused mainly by limited visibility as a result of inconsiderate parking in the centre of the car park.

The partners went to great lengths and expense to change the layout of the car park to protect our most vulnerable and frail patients and we’ve requested that vehicles are only parked in clearly marked spaces.

50 Despite our requests patients still park in the centre of the car park and also park in front of staff and GP cars causing great inconvenience when staff need to exit the car park.

The partners have always agreed to provide limited parking for patients but may be forced to reconsider future access to the car park if the inconsiderate parking continues as there are real concerns that at some point there will be a collision between a vehicle and a patient.

We would remind all patients that when our car parking spaces are full there is three hours of free parking in the Gun Pit Road council car park located just a three-minute walk away, just behind Boots pharmacy.

Sure Start Children’s Centre We have recently been made aware that the Sure Start Centre in St Piers Lane will be closing at the end of September 2019.

Patients that use the stay and play service can contact Sure Start on 01342 831 306 up until the closure date for advice on the most local alternative service.

If your concern is regarding child health or development please contact the 0-19 Tandridge Team on 01883 340 922 .

Surgery training afternoon The surgery will be closed for staff training on Thursday, 26 th September from 12:30. Patients requiring medical advice should contact NHS111 by dialling 111. In a medical emergency ring 999. The surgery will reopen as normal on Friday morning.

Lingfield Patient Participation Group (PPG) Are you interested in contributing ideas to community projects for Lingfield patients? Why not join our PPG and make your ideas heard.

The PPG meets four times a year at the surgery to discuss topical matters and suggest projects that may enhance patients’ day to day lives.

It is also a great way to keep in touch with new developments in healthcare at the surgery.

If you would like to know more about our PPG please contact the practice manager Wendy Maguire on 01342 836 327 .

51 Charity offers bespoke support for children facing the death of a loved one

Jigsaw (South East) is delighted to announce several new additions to its services, which will enable the bereavement charity to better prepare children for the loss of a loved one. Through the Preparing for Loss service , it will offer child-centred, tailored support to families, who will be helped by a named support worker.

This person will work on a one-to-one basis with the child and/or young person when their loved one is terminally ill, at the time of bereavement, and in the initial days and months following the death. It will be able to give parental support and advice during this difficult period for the family.

“Our groundbreaking Preparing for Loss service works in collaboration with the wider family, schools to whom we offer support, guidance and training, hospices and other agencies,” said the charity’s Operations Manager, Nickey Price. “It will enable us to better meet the needs of the children, young people and their families through small group work and community advice events.”

“Sometimes, parent-child bonds break down during long-term illness and bereavement. Our service supports families to re-establish these relationships. We hope that it will strengthen families, improve communication and help them build resilience,” added Price.

Jigsaw (South East) secured funding from both the National Lottery Community Fund and from the Guildford and Waverley Clinical Commissioning Group to continue its work with families in Surrey, West Sussex and the surrounding areas. “We are a small charity and our service will be bolstered by this funding, which ensures future sustainability for the Preparing for Loss service,” said Price. The charity accepts referrals from families directly, schools, health professionals and agencies.

Based at East Court Mansion in East Grinstead since 2012, Jigsaw (South East) offers support to children and young people who have a family member with a serious, life-limiting condition. It also provides grief support to children and young people who have experienced the death of a significant family member through illness, accident, suicide or murder (through groups in Reigate, Guildford and East Grinstead).

For more information contact Communications Co-ordinator, Jigsaw (South East): email [email protected] , or call on 01342 313 895 . www.jigsawsoutheast.org.uk

56 East Grinstead Foodbank helps those who need it most

Our volunteers at the foodbank continue to be busy helping clients with food and household items, generously donated from the local community. In the year to 31st March 2019, The Trussell Trust (a group of 427 foodbanks nationally), reported a 19% increase in food parcels handed out to 1.6 million people.

Whilst we, at the local foodbank, haven’t seen that level of growth over the last year – when comparing the full year of 2015 with 2018 – we have seen an 80% increase in demand! And in March and April 2019, we helped on average 35 adults and children per week.

We work closely with, for example, Hurst Green Children & Family Centre (alarmingly, set to close in September 2019), Lingfield Surgery and Lingfield Primary School.

In July 2019 we are packing close to 130 bags for the summer period and delivering them to local schools before term ends, an increase from 85 last year. The summer holidays tend to be quieter for us, but our need is highest in the Autumn & Winter months.

The fact that we’re able to help at all is due entirely to the continuing local generosity. We have collection boxes at local supermarkets, including Waitrose in Oxted, at the Lingfield & Dormansland Community Centre as well as permanent collection boxes at both Sainsbury’s and Waitrose stores in East Grinstead.

Where appropriate, when clients visit we also try to signpost them to other agencies and groups who may be able to help, such as local Housing Needs teams, mother and baby charities such as Stripey Stork at Reigate, the Hub, and the Hope Job Club.

As one of our volunteers said: “We can’t solve every problem or right every injustice, but we can lend a helping hand in a crisis.” We remain most grateful for your local support, with thanks, Tony Cox & the Foodbank Steering Team.

59 QVH: Your chance to nominate outstanding staff for annual hospital awards Have you been a patient or visitor at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead in the last year and received treatment or support from an outstanding member of staff? If so the hospital wants to hear from you.

QVH is launching its annual hunt for a worthy winner (or winners) of its outstanding patient experience award and needs the public to get involved. The hospital wants to hear about staff who have shown exceptional care and compassion – whether it’s the person who helped book your appointment, or served you a cuppa in the canteen, through to the nurse, therapist or doctor who cared for you.

It only takes a minute to nominate a member of staff via this online form. If you can’t remember the full name of the person you want to choose please give as much detail as you can – what they looked like, their job, and so on. You can also call the corporate affairs team on 01342 414 508 for a form. The deadline is Monday 19 th August 2019 .

“We are proud of the care and compassion that our hospital is renowned for,” said Chief Executive Steve Jenkin. “The outstanding patient experience award is an opportunity for us to recognise and thank the members of our staff that go the extra mile, and is particularly special as nominations come from the public. It means a lot to the staff who are nominated to know that their work has made a real difference to the patients and visitors they care for.”

Last year the hospital had joint winners for its award – breast reconstruction nurse specialists Rebecca Spencer and Pam Golton, and consultant orthodontist Dr Lindsay Winchester. Lindsay’s nominee said: “Her dedication to her patients has been an inspiration and my recent surgery has shown me how the orthodontic and maxillofacial teams can transform people’s lives. Lindsay has transformed me from a withdrawn adolescent to a confident young woman who has just begun studying dentistry.”

This year’s QVH Staff Awards are being supported by QVH Charity. For more information please contact the QVH Press Office on 01342 414 508 .

! 61 The Probus Club of Dormansland, Lingfield and District In the summer 2019 edition of Community News I outlined the background and ethos of the Club, and I do not want to repeat myself for this edition. What I would like to point out is that we have changed our Club title to include Lingfield. This is to emphasise that, although originally formed in Dormansland, the Club is open to retired and semi-retired men from the much wider area. You are all welcome, and if there are any wives, partners, and girlfriends who have read this far, could you please consider persuading your other half to give us a try! We have had three very interesting and informative speakers over the last three months, the first by a Dormansland resident on the subject of the history of carriage driving. It was an enthralling, lively and humorous presentation where we learnt of the many quintessential British traditions associated with the art and craft of carriage driving and the practicalities and traditions of the dress code. It was fascinating to learn of the numerous common words and expressions used today which originated from the horse-drawn era, one of which was common in its day but now considered risqué! Another speaker presented a fascinating talk entitled “Round the World Cycle Ride”, given by a lady who arrived, naturally, at the Centenary Room in Dormansland on her red bike! Her journey took her across Europe, Asia and America, lasted almost a year, cycling around 10,000 miles in the process. She related tales of kindness, hospitality, help and some aggressiveness experienced en route. Our latest speaker gave a talk entitled “Be happy, things are better than you think!” Despite a general feeling of doom and gloom in the country by some, we learnt that, for example, statistics show that 80% of people in the world have some access to electricity; in the last 20 years the proportion of people living in extreme poverty has almost halved; the majority of the world population live in middle income countries; and such wild animals as tigers, giant pandas and black rhinos which were listed as threatened species in 1996 have not become more critically endangered since then. Our next fellowship lunch is planned for 1 August at the Kentish Horse pub, Markbeech, near Edenbridge. Looking further ahead there is a planned Club visit with guests to the new Museum and Chapel on the afternoon of 10 September, to include afternoon tea. The Probus Club meets on the second Thursday morning of each month in the Centenary Room, Dormansland. A couple of future speakers will present such topics as “The Eyes Have It” and “Can you hear me Mother”. If any of this intrigues you, or wets your appetite, please come and join us on a trial basis. I can be contacted on 01342 870 643 or [email protected] for further details. Mike Chapple, Chairman 62 What’s the number?
