GOD’S JOURNEY FOR ME/YOU #34 Is to grow our ability for humility :1-14

I. Why is Humility Important?

1. was humble - He modeled it. vs’1-7

Matthew 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

2. We are called to be humble - He commanded it. Vs 11

Ephesians 4:2 “Be completely humble and gentle.”

3. Humility is required for a strong connection with God - He’ll reward it. Vs 14

James 4:6 “That is why scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’”

1 Peter 5:5 “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Luke 14:14 (TPT) “Then you will experience a great blessing in this life, and at the resurrection of the godly you will receive a full reward.”

II. How to grow in humility

FIRST

Watch how Jesus modeled humility Vs 1-6 We see it in action.

1. Humility extends grace to everyone-even opponents

Luke 14:1 “One , when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.”

2. Humility puts people over politics

Luke 14:2-4 “There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the and experts in the law, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?’ But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.”

3. Humility cultivates self-awareness

Luke 14:3&5 “Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?’...Then he asked them, ‘If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”

● In ourselves - first, then

Luke 6:41-42 “‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

● In others

Luke 14:7 “Then he (Jesus) noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable…”

Luke 14:12 “Then Jesus told the host,...”

SECOND

Follow what Jesus taught on humility vs 7-14 He calls us to action.

Look for and step into opportunities: 1. To be last instead of first.

Luke 13:30 “Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”

Luke 14:10 (Voice) “Go and sit in the back of the room. Then your host may find you and say, ‘My friend! Why are you sitting back here? Come up to this table near the front!”

2. To serve instead of being served.

Mark 10:43b-45 “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

3. To give without expectation of return

Luke 14:12 (MSG) “When you throw a banquet, don’t just invite your friends, relatives, or rich neighbors—for it is likely they will return the favor.”

4. To give to those who cannot repay.

Luke 14:13 (TPT) “Invite the poor to your banquet, along with the outcast, the handicapped, and the blind—those who could never repay you the favor.”
