The heartland of America has a reputation for having cold winters but warmhearted people. This holiday season proved this axiom to be true, as more than 1500 children and adults with disabilities were the delighted recipients of a treasure trove of gifts, care of hundreds of generous friends of UCP Seguin of Greater Chicago. Through a variety of special appeals and activities, individuals, businesses, public officials, UCP Seguin board members and staff provided gifts and holiday enjoyment to people with disabilities across the metropolitan Chicago region.

As part of the festivities William Pacella and Pacella Trucking Express donated comfortable long-sleeved t-shirts, while former North Riverside Mayor Richard Scheck, his wife Judy and their family contributed backpacks to make the season merrier for adults served by UCP Seguin. 23RD ANNUAL On The Table UCP SEGUIN’S 100 STORIES OF PHILANTHROPY

UCP Seguin will soon embark on a new year-long project designed to highlight stories of philanthropy: “On the Table: UCP Seguin’s 100 Stories of Philanthropy”.

UCP Seguin is partnering with The Chicago Community Trust, the region’s community foundation, helping to commemorate its centennial and celebrate the most philanthropic region in the nation. MB Financial Bank, which recently celebrated its own centennial, has agreed to join the Trust as “co-presenter” for UCP Seguin’s efforts. The “On the Table” campaign is designed to convene donors – both financial and in-kind including volunteers – in small groups to share their own compelling stories of giving to a cause. Those featured will be community donors, family members, Board members, staff, program participants, and others – a whole range of “philanthropists” who have given their treasure, talents, and time at various levels, large and small.

The Chicago Community Trust is working with UCP Seguin and other partner nonprofits to conduct the first such region-wide series of “On the Table” events on May 12, 2015. Then for the next year, in coordination with the Trust and MB Financial, UCP Seguin plans to convene monthly such events at locations throughout its footprint of services. As many as 10 to 20 individuals – some to share their stories of giving, others as guests – are expected to participate in each “On the Table” gathering. The events will serve to recognize individuals for their generosity, while providing to the public compelling stories of philanthropy that may stir them to similar action. UCP Seguin will publicize these stories through multiple means, from our website to social media, from press releases to publications and e-blasts.

As spring blooms we look forward to sharing the how “Friends of UCP Seguin” have shown their kindness, and in re-defining philanthropy across the many wonderful ways it can be expressed.

UCP Seguin is pleased to begin its twenty-fifth year of partnership with the Chicago Zoological Society at the Brookfield Zoo. Over this long and fruitful relationship, a UCP Seguin crew of persons with disabilities has provided grounds-keeping services for the Zoo, while the Zoo also employs two individuals directly doing similar grounds- work. In addition, for the last three years, UCP Seguin has propagated, grown, proofed, and transplanted native Illinois perennials for the Zoo under the guidance of Seguin Gardens & Gifts. During this time, more than 30 of UCP Seguin’s participants planted from seed Coneflowers, Black-eyed Susans and a variety of native grasses in multiple beds in the Zoo’s North parking lots and in the Painted Dog exhibit. Zoo employee Tony Fabianich supervised the crew along with UCP Seguin staff members Ana Solares, Susanna Abarca, Richard Biggins, and Natalie Carreño.
