UCS PARTNERSHIP AND OUTREACH REVIEW

2018–19 2 UCS PARTNERSHIP AND OUTREACH REVIEW Introduction

UCS Hampstead is a leading day school that combines the highest standards of academic achievement and pastoral care with outstanding facilities for all-round education whilst embracing a distinctive liberal ethos.

From its beginning in 1830, UCS has had at its core a commitment to access, with a pledge that religion should be no bar to entry. In the 21st century, we add a further commitment – that the education we provide will not be restricted solely to those who can afford it. UCS consistently ranks at the top of independent schools in London for the number of 100% bursaries awarded each year, and last year we provided £1.2 million in bursary support.

In addition to this, UCS is firmly committed to ensuring that the school and its pupils play an integral role in the local community through partnerships with other schools and charitable organisations. For example, in 2018–19 we worked with more than a dozen primary schools and four secondary schools. In this brochure, we illustrate some of the highlights of our partnership work from the last 12 months. We are continually looking to broaden our partnership provision and if you would like any more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

24 UCS PARTNERSHIP AND OUTREACH REVIEW UCS PARTNERSHIP AND OUTREACH REVIEW 25 26 UCS PARTNERSHIP AND OUTREACH REVIEW Charity Fundraising

Pupils at the Senior School of University College School usually raise over £45,000 per annum for charities. The majority of this fundraising takes place during the second half of the Autumn term and UCS refers to this period as ‘Community Action’. Pupils nominate eight charities to receive the monies raised and these are a mixture of local and international charities. Talks on the work carried out by these organisations occur throughout the term and pupils are given the opportunity to design, organise and lead a variety of fundraising activities under the supervision of staff.

In the past, these activities have included: designing and selling tee-shirts, Battle of the Bands, football tournaments, teachers’ rap battle, and a sponsored 24-hour cycle. The passion our pupils have for charity work is astonishing, and allowing them to lead the fundraising themselves gives them the opportunity to develop their skills in event management, public speaking, marketing, publicity, performance, accountancy and catering.

University College School has a deep-rooted connection with the local community. Our partnership provision continues to expand and I am always hugely impressed by the enthusiasm of our staff and pupils to embrace new ideas and ventures. We are proud of our work in a number of areas but we all agree the most impactful work occurs when UCS pupils work alongside pupils from other schools.

In 2019–20 we will work with more schools than ever before but we are always keen to hear from others who would like to be involved. If you know of a school or a charity that would be interested in working alongside us in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.
