She then served six terms in the Massachusetts State Senate from 1993 to 2011, during which time she represented the Suffolk and Norfolk districts as a Democrat. She became Assistant Majority Leader in early 2003 after having served as Senate Chair of the Joint Legislative Committees on Taxation, Banks and Banking, Public Service, Criminal Justice, Ways and Means, Education, and Housing and Urban Development. She retired from her Senate post in 2011.
