Hornets shut–out Misfi t Militia end season on a high note as Schomberg in close battle BY BRIAN LOCKHART Team Canada impresses in tune–up win It was a rough, tough, game Friday night between the Alliston Hornets and the Schomberg Cougars. Despite a high intensity 60 minutes of hockey, neither team could do much in the scoring department and the game ended 2–0 for Alliston. Alliston’s Matt Cochrane notched a single early in the fi rst period, but that was it for both teams until Jamie Ben- nett scored on an empty net with :38 seconds left on the clock when Schomberg pulled the goalie with man in the box in an attempt to tie it up. On paper, it was an undisciplined game with Schomberg taking 45 minutes on 14 infractions and Alliston getting dinged for 62 minutes on 18 infractions. Though most of the penalties in the fi rst period were mi- nors, things got serious in the second frame when a couple of fi ghts broke out in the corner and while the refs were piling on, a second fi sticuffs broke out unchecked at centre ice. That all resulted in some game misconducts. Despite the high penalty minutes, it was a good game to watch with lot of scoring chances on both sides, and a pretty revved up crowd in the stands. “It was a hard fought game,” Said winning goalie TJ Sherwood. “I knew the team would bail me out if I needed help.” Sherwood got thumped in net a few times when the ag- gressive play slammed through the crease. “I don’t think they did it on purpose – it just happened,” PHOTOS BY BRIAN LOCKHART He said. “They (Schomberg) stepped it up a little bit here The National Guard roller derby event took place at Alliston Memorial Arena on Saturday and there in the third period, but our team kept shutting (Oct. 25) with the Misfi t Militia hosting the Bay Street Bruisers in the opening event. The free event is a way to promote local businesses in the downtown cores of Tottenham and Beeton and a second opportunity for kids to wear their Hallowe’en costumes – in the daylight, when they can actually be seen! Trent’s little sister, Brooke, age 3, also submitted a pumpkin in the ‘Stencil’ category. She drew a Hello Kitty face.

Speeding, child in the car On Friday, October 10th at 2:22 p.m. an offi cer from the Nottawasaga OPP was on general patrol on Tottenham Road south of County Road 1 in the Township of New Tecumseth, when a silver Honda Civic was observed to be travelling at a high rate of speed. The offi cer determined BASEBAR the vehicle was travelling at 151 KPH in a posted 80 KPH zone. That is 71 KM over the posted speed limit. The 38 year old female driver of Alliston was charged with Stunt Driving, her drivers license was automatically suspended for 7 days and her vehicle was impounded for 7 days. This driver had a child occupant and was found to be speeding on Tottenham Road just south of the fatal colli- sion that had occurred only two hours prior. Page 16 – October 30, 2014 – The TIMES

As usual, the branch has a lot planned for Remembrance Day. “Our Remembrance Day Dinner this year is on November 8th, starting at 6 p.m. in our auditorium upstairs at the branch and the cost is $12.50. The dinner will be served by our Ladies Auxil- iary,” Brown said. Always the biggest of the local Remembrance Day services, the Tottenham Legion will honour Canadian Soldiers and Veterans on November 9th. The parade will form up 9:30 a.m. (earlier than usual this year) and march off from the branch west along Rich- mond Street to Forestall, and then north to Mill Street, ending at the Cenotaph. After the service and wreath laying, the parade will march west on Mill Street, then south on Queen Street under the direction of Major Savoy, the reviewing officer. The parade will finish back at the Legion Branch on Richmond Street, where refreshments will be served and the public will have an opportunity to meet with soldiers currently serving their country.
