INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

i ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance en- velopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parish- ioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked. i RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepa- ration for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent. i SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way. HOW TO REGISTER AT THE CATHEDRAL To register as a parishioner of the Cathedral, please visit www.stpatricks.org/newcomers/register, or scan the QR code to the right, and complete the simple online form. Alternatively, paper regis- tration forms may be found at each of the entrances to the Cathedral.

God expects unity among believers because once conflict enters into the picture, the whole organization becomes weaker. That is part of what stewardship demands of us. There are times when each of us must place his or her personal preferences to the side for the good of the group. That is never easy to do, but to be the kind of community we wish to be and need to be it is abso- lutely necessary. Psalm 133 says, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.” Indeed!

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, June 10: St. Getulius—Martyr St. Getulius was a Roman officer who served in the armies of the Emperors Trajan and Hadrian in the second cen- tury. St. Getulius converted to Christianity, along with his brother, Amantius, which led him to resign his post in the army and retire to Tivoli. The Emperor Hadrain became furious over this news, and sent his guard, Caerealis, to arrest him. St. Getulius converted the guard, which prompted the Emperor to send another guard, Primitivus, who St. Getulius was also able to convert. Finally, the Emperor had the judge, Licinius, sentence all of these men to death. Ss. Gertulius, Amantius, Caerealis, and Primitivus were tortured and clubbed to death for the Faith on the Via Salaria in the year 120. St. Getulius’ seven sons would all be martyred as well through various forms of death.

Monday, June 11: St. Barnabas—Apostle Memorial St. Barnabas, born as Joseph, was a Jewish man of the tribe of Levi who became a disciple of Christ. He experienced such great success spreading the Gospel message, that we was renamed Barnabas, which means “Son of Exhortation.” He is described in the book of Acts as “A good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith” (Cf. Acts 11:24), and was given the title of “Apostle” (Acts 14:14). St. Barnabas was able to success- fully convince the Twelve Apostles of St. Paul’s conversion to Christ. Together with St. Paul, St. Barnabas helped form Christian churches in Antioch, Cyprus, and other cities in Asia. According to tradition, St. Barnabas received martyrdom around the year 61 when he was tortured and stoned to death. Tuesday, June 12: St. Gaspare Bertoni—Confessor St. Gaspare Bertoni was born to a wealthy family in Venice on October 9, 1777. At his first Communion, he received a message that he was to become a priest, so he entered the seminary in 1796. St. Gaspare became a member of the Gos- pel Fraternity for the Hospitals, where he cared for the sick. He later started an oratory dedicated to the formation of young people. Following Pope Pius VII imprisonment by Bonaparte, St. Gaspare helped lead a prayer move- ment for the Holy Father. On November 4, 1816, St. Gaspare moved into a small house next to a closed church, and he founded the Sacred Stigmata of Our Lord Jesus Christ. During his final forty years of life, he patiently endured con- stant, severe pain, and had over 300 surgeries on his right leg. His last words before death were: “I need to suffer.”

Wednesday, June 13: St. Anthony of Padua—Confessor and Doctor Memorial St. Anthony was born in 1195 as Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal. At fifteen years of age, he entered the Order of Regular Canons of St. Augustine. In 1221, a group of Franciscans visited and brought relics of five Franciscan martyrs. Inspired by this experience, Fernando left the Canons, and joined the Franciscans, where he took the name “Anthony.” St. Anthony experienced success preaching the Faith in Africa. He then went to Italy, where he met St. Francis of As- sisi. He became a professor of theology, and taught in several different cities. Eventually, St. Anthony set out preaching once again, and proclaimed the Gospel to Italy, , and Spain. Many miraculous occurrences are attributed to the saint. Quote: “Where true poverty is found, there is sufficiency; where there is abundance, there is want.”

Thursday, June 14: St. Methodius I of Constantinople—Patriarch St. Methodius was born into a rich family, but left his wealth behind to become a monk. As a monk, he built a monastery on the Greek island of Chios. In time, St. Methodius was called to Constantinople to serve as an assistant to Patriarch Nicephorus. When the Patriarch was exiled, he went to with a letter to notify the Pope. St. Methodius returned to Constantinople, but was tortured and then imprisoned for seven years. In 842, the Empress Theodora helped Methodius become Patriarch, where he fought against iconoclasm, and established what became known as the “Feast of Orthodoxy” in the East. St. Methodius is recognized as a saint in both the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches. Friday, June 15: St. Germaine Cousin—Virgin St. Germane was born in Pibrac, France in 1579. She was very sickly, and had a deformity of her arm with partial pa- ralysis. St. Germane was repeatedly abused by her step-mother. Out of fear that her own children would become ill, the step-mother forced St. Germane to stay outside in the cold barn where she slept among the sheep to stay warm. St. Ger- mane regularly prayed the rosary, and attended daily Mass. She cared for the poor and taught local children. Once, the step-mother accused St. Germane of stealing bread and made her open her apron. St. Germane revealed flowers, and lovingly said to her abusive step-mother: “Please accept this flower, Mother. God sends it to you in sign of His forgive- ness.” St. Germane died at 22 years of age sleeping in the cold barn. Her body was discovered incorrupt 40 years later.

Saturday, June 16: St. John Francis Regis—Confessor St. John was born in Fontcouverte, France in 1597 to a noble family. He was educated by the Jesuits, and entered the order himself in December of 1616. St. John spent his early priesthood caring for the sick following a plague outbreak in Toulouse. He showed a special concern in caring for the poor, prisoners, and in converting prostitutes. Beginning in 1632, St. John was assigned to preach the Catholic faith to the French Huguenots, where he experienced great success. He became known for preaching outdoors long hours of the day, in even the poorest of weather conditions, and then hearing Confessions all night. St. John developed a lung illness when he was 43 years of age, but continued his minis- try. One day, he was found unconscious in the Confessional. He would be revived, but he died shortly after.
