Sheila Thompson, a supervisor at Building Services, has been dedicated to helping Comox Valley families through supporting YANA (You Are Not Alone), a local non-profit society that provides assistance to families who need to travel outside of the Comox Valley to access medi- YANA: Sheila Thompson cal treatment for their children. “Nothing is more important than our children and their health.” On getting started with YANA, Sheila shares, “My neighbor, Mrs. Woods, used to make the Christmas Crackers they [YANA] sell, and my daughter and I would go to help.” From there her involvement blossomed. She combined her desire to support to families in need with her love of baking, and “…putting together a baking basket as a raffle for Christmas to help support this local organization seemed to go hand in hand.” Positive behaviour and purpose breeds more positive behaviour - soon she had involved a variety of people and units around the base. “I want to thank all those who helped create this basket with their baking; Building Services, 21 Health Services, Barrack Warden, RPOps and Wing Admin.” During the 2016 Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC) Sheila’s basket raised $765 that was directed to YANA through the United Way. It was a record year for the annual baking basket raffle! While people close to Sheila have benefited directly from her fundraising efforts, her good intentions extend further. “Family is family - and not always blood - but a feeling from within. YANA is for all families of the Comox Valley.” To learn more about how YANA is supporting the families in the Comox Valley, to get involved, Sheila Thompson (third from right) joined by fellow bakers and baking or to seek assistance, visit yanacomoxvalley.com. basket winners, Vicki Wrenn and Mary Fuhr (centre).
