Advocacy: We are the only creatures in the history of our planet that creates ‘rubbish’. It’s a human thing. In nature, there is no such thing as rubbish. Animals use what they no longer need for different purposes. Australians use 4 billion plastic bags a year and we have one of the highest rates of tree clearing in any developed country. If each individual follows the 5 Rs - RETHINK, REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, RESPECT, we can start by changing our everyday lifestyle in small ways to make a big impact.

• Say no to plastic bags – BYO reusable bags • Use alternatives to plastic – bamboo toothbrushes • Refill your own drink bottle, bring own cutlery, straws • Get a compost bin – reduce food waste • Plant trees to purify the air/provide homes for animals affected by de- forestation • Donate to conservations protecting endangered animals

As 2018, I wish to educate children about plastic and food waste by visiting schools, team up with groups at university to ap- proach businesses in making choices (go plastic free, use alternatives), volunteer at wildlife parks, host charity events to promote awareness and encourage the local community to get involved in various activities such as clean up days and markets where trash can be repurposed into treasure. Coconut Tree, A Quintessence of Resilience

Have you ever seen a coconut tree full of holes from its bot- tom to upper trunk, but, still bearing a lot of fruits? It just shows it had gone through a lot of fights for its life and had fully recovered. I saw one by the tee mount of Par 3 Hole No. 5 of the Midlands Golf. I took a picture of it, but, unfor- tunately, I could not retrieve it. It must have been erased by accident. The holes, actually, are indicative that the tree had ISDG/DE/IS/Dir. About eight (8) years ago, the coconut trees in the Calabarzon area were infested by cocolisap, an insect infestation that affects the coconut leaves, turning them into brown color. This really affected the trees’ food production and hence, its fruit bearing process. The infestation was then a puzzle to Agriculture authorities, even to some senators, on how to treat this disease. The coconut trees for afew years suffered until Typhoon Glenda with maximum winds of 220 kph hammered Southern . The coconut trees bore the brunt of the typhoon and weathered it. And only a few fell down, but, the most interesting thing that happened was all the cocolisap insects were blown away by the typhoon. After the typhoon, the trees recovered and are now bearing many fruits. Indeed, there are many lessons to learn from the co- conut trees. Not only is it a good tree to plant in typhoon prone areas, but, also, a good mirror for our lives. When life seems hopeless, just hang on until a great opportunity comes a long. However, the most common lesson from it: Use your PDG Edgar “Ed” Chiongbian, ISDG/DE/IS/Dir. Albert Alday and Rotary coconut!
