THE hospitals here considered were both products of the great age of medieval hospital-founding, in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. From that age fifteen out of the twenty-five known hospitals in Kent originate, five being earlier and five later. Perhaps more than any other of these (except the unfortunate house of Sweynester in Sittingbourne), these two were unable to adapt themselves to the changing conditions of the fourteenth century, yet they differed widely in purpose and status: Ospringe had royal patronage and performed several of the various functions later assigned to more specialized institutions that have inherited the name of hospital; Romney was of comparatively humble foundation and solely a refuge for lepers. Both houses have already been the subjects of detailed studies in Archceologia Cantiana, since when it has been part of the writer's official duty to investigate their physical remains and he has taken the oppor- tunity to submit the limited, documentary evidence, as it were, to a second pressing. It is this, rather than any attempt to test the relevance of two such divergent samples to the general problem of the social history of the medieval hospital, that is the reason for considering them together here. Not without its own share of historic highlights and notoriety, your walk begins in the ancient settlement of Newnham, nestled in the Syndale Valley since at least the 12th century. Here the Romans grew grapes and James Pimm was born – creator of one of Britain’s best-loved summer drinks, the eponymous Pimms. The Revd. Granville Wheler proved the existence of electric current in 1725 at Otterden Place – just one of the grand homes that pepper your path as you make your way through ancient woods, working farmland and historic grazing pastures. Many of the woods on your route are still hunted by wildfowlers who sell their game to local butchers and restaurants, while others support the rural craft of coppicing - common in this area. Traditional coppicing of sweet chestnut shoots for fence stakes extends the life of the trees and floods the woodland floor with light in spring and summer, promoting an abundance of flowers and food for wildlife. As you pass back into sweeping open fields you may see kestrels and other birds of prey. -

The Minutes of the Parish Council Meeting held in Upchurch Village Hall on 5th September 2019 at 7.30pm. Present: Cllr Tyrone Ripley (Chaoirman), Cllr John Arnold (Vice Chairman), Cllr Pam Denny, Cllr Alan Horton, Cllr Gerry Lewin, Cllr Janet Marshall, and Cllr Gary Rosewell; and Mrs Wendy Licence (Clerk). Also present were five members of the public. 66. Apologies for absence Cllr Ripley welcomed everyone to the meeting. Apologies had been received from Cllr Peter Masson (holiday) and Cllr Neil Sheppard (work); apologies accepted. Apologies had also been received from KCCllr Mike Whiting (holiday) and Ward Member Richard Palmer (at another meeting|); apologies noted. 67. Declarations of interest None were declared. 68. Minutes of the meeting held on Thursday 4th July 2019 Item 51. i. of the minutes were amended to read “SECONDED by Cllr Arnold” of the meeting. Cllr Ripley said it was not under the remit of the Council to manage the garden. ACTION: Clerk to contact the Coop and asked for the area to be tidied. Cllr Lewin asked if the Coop could be asked for a progress report on the repairs to the shop following the fire. Many residents are dependent on the store as there are unable to shop elsewhere. -

ANNEX B FORMAL OBJECTIONS TO TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER THE STREET/CANTERBURY ROAD, BOUGHTON-UNDER-BLEAN/DUNKIRK FORMAL OBJECTION 1 ****** *** The Street Boughton-under-Blean Kent ME13 *** Dear Sirs RE: Objection to the Double Yellow Lines - The Street, Boughton-under-Blean I would like to formally object to the planed double yellow lines to be placed along 'The Street' in Boughton-under-Blean. Having recently bought *** The Street (a 3 bedroom house) we only have 2 parking spaces and therefore, reply on the parking along 'The Street'. I'm aware that the Cabinet have meet and stated that because more people had agreed to the proposal, by only 3 I would like to add, there were still 8 people who objected to it and those were the residents who live along 'The Street' and therefore, this should not go ahead based on the fact that the majority was only in favour by 3 more than who objected to it as that it not a high enough percentage given that the 11 who were in favour do not all live along 'The Street'. There is not enough parking for all the Woodmans Hall flats and houses which are joined to Woodmans Hall. Therefore, occasional parking is required along 'The Street' which is mainly used of an evening or at the weekend. If Yellow lines are placed there then this will just mean that more people will have to park further down in the village which is already busy enough with cars and will cause an inconvenience. I would like the Joint Transport Board to take note of what Kent County Council have suggested and to only do a short area of Double Yellow Lines to still allow some parking, yet how the Cabinet have dismissed this, which surly should not be right. -
