By RALPH A . DUPUY f Greetings rom the class of 1 943 , friends and honored guests .

In response to your invitation to speak at these exercises , I feel that the subject should be one of common interest : we ' all r i are thinking about this wo ld s confl ct , its outcome , and

permanent peace .

At this time we are presented with a difficult problem and the answer has been given by Archibald MacLeish : This

war is a war , not for continents and islan ds which distance '

can produce , but for men s minds , and knowledge which men have in their minds—things which no ocean and no

battleship could ever secure .

The r science of aviation is making this globe into a very small neighbo hood , for nations are beginn ing to plan international airports and airways for the " r For - r futu e . example , British American development of wo ld aviation on a private capital basis , with nationals of each country subscribing to half of the " necessary funds ; governments leasing air fields on joint sovereignty basis . W r e, therefore , realize that the world of tomo row must have honesty, must hold " esteem for every people . As President Roosevelt says : It should be a pat tern of a global civilization which recognizes no limitations of religion , or of creed , or of race . This great Republic is preparing thousands of fliers ; and with a world so easily navigated , we must demand a perman ent peace , happi r ness and security for the futur e . Our armed fo ces are exerting strength to defend the only things that mak e life tolerable : honor, beauty, truth , and lov ing kindness .

f W ld r Much of our knowledge has come rom the Old or , which has prese ved ' vast libraries of man s intellectual progress ; but now the time has come when W ld W ld the New or must become the teacher , and the Old or must accept the valuable lessons of Freedom which will g overn a changed universe .

' r — r Seve al great Americans Wilson , Lincoln , and Jeffe son were interested in r r the common people , and these g eat leade s gave the ideals of the Four

Freedoms , united with Liberty and Education .

Was it not Thomas Paine who wrote The Rights of Man , and did he not give a clear definition of Freedom? This war torn world is eagerly waiting to accept these ideals , and it is the hope of American youth that the principles of

Democracy will be the foundation of a Federated Europe .

We are convinced that the tragic pictures of war must be forever erased from r the pages of human history , fo we know that Victory without lasting peace is

e . futile . William Foulkes has exp ressed this hope in his po m

WINNING THE PEACE

Wh w ma o ins the war y lose the peace , unless

He plans , in faith , a better world to build Out of the wreckage which the earth has filled : '

The s tagg ring cost in blood and wealth , the stress nf And strain of dislocated life , co ess '

The world s sad bankruptcy , when peace is killed

- By tyranny, which seeks , by might , self willed

To rule the world, to curse and not to bless . The blasted soil must once again be tilled;

In a t and industr y , in home and school ,

In church an d state , the world its weal must find;

In vast , creative , social science skilled , ' "

Mankind must learn , by heart , Christ s Golden Rule ,

W a . ith cords of brotherhood , all n tions bind

t D d : We ar e . Dr . Iohn od say s fast learning hat machines are not enough

We must discover the frontiers of our own spirits . Only in learning the

n . mechan ics of common huma ity can we come to live at peace Therefore , it and our democratic way of life is to be kept alive supported , we must have belief in the cultur e of th e past , and appreciation of the humanities for the future .

Men who possess courage and ideals must recognize th e fact that the ideals t an of literature teach us to laugh at riumph d defeat , for human natur e will exi st beyond the shadow of our time and beyond the darkness which now n fin l covers the world . It is , therefore , the huma ties which will a ly bind this

in n . r world together a lasti g peace It is art , music , religion , histo y, literature , w ' lan guages , and the allied sciences which ill bring new values to life s meaning.

'

n . D In the outlin e of tomorrow s educational pla , Dr odd explains : "

I . The teacher will have a change of thought and understanding it he is to teach youth how to plan better and live more nobly . "

2 . Youth will be taught lessons concerned with worthy ideals , for youth must appreciate not al one his environment and opportunities , but he must become a master of himself .

The schools of tomorrow will form methods in teaching the humanities . Many of these outlines ar e now under consideration , an d educators are seriously studying this course of action . The cultural studies will emphasize a definite

- foundation in our post war construction of education .

On v we the battlefield , our bra e soldiers will not die in vain , if , the living , n an d determ i e that decency the Golden Rule must predominate , so that this world can be a better place tomorrow, where peace , prosperity , and happi ness will prevail .

'

Tis not in vain , and not by chance I ao , But for the sake of men to come

That I have chosen thus , to face and fight '

Th e menace to a free man s right .

I l l

Tis not adventure that I seek , but peace ; W man of hat , born worthy the name , could cease

To champion right , keep peace alive And help a sink ing world surv ive?

' '

Tis not because I m tired of life . I fight '

But for the weary , for the child s weak cry, And willingly my life I give

That humble folk might work and live .

1 7 By ELENORE S . FINKLESTEIN

- During the past month , many high school students , like

r their elders all ove the country , have assumed the task of

attempting , orally , to solve the problems of youth in the

- — r post war world p oblems which , in the months to come ,

youth will be trying to solve actually . Realizing that young

r peopl—e are often too cocksu e , too dogmatic about their ideas which would , of course , immediately cure the — crippled universel I would like to consider with all due x humility for our lack of e perience and wisdom , as much

' of youth s par t in solving contemporary problems as we can safely handle in a short time .

When the bill to draft eighteen-year olds was pa ssed by Congress on Novem

1 2 1 42 r ber , 9 , minors were suddenly th ust hea dlong into a war far more

r r an . ba ba ous than y other in the long history of man In fact , many of the boys 1 943 in our class of have already responded to the call of active duty . As we

welcome the parents of these lads to our graduation exercises , our hearts rejoice with mutual pride in the un s elfish patriotism which our uniformed class

mates have display ed, exchanging the pencil , paper , and books of the shel i tered classroom for the r fle , the army pack , and the bayonet of the battle w field . Moreover , ithin the next few months , most of the remaining young men will probably be inducted into some branch of the service . Other classmates ,

both boys and girls , will be engaged in war work or voluntary assistance .

i fi htin for r Br efly , youth is g g the ideals of a unive sal civilization , and does not intend to halt until the ruthless foe has been decisively defeated .

But our battles will not cease with actual military or naval combat . Youth

r must recognize its duty to pa ticipate in a successful plan , not only for restor

r ing the earth to its former status , but also for regene ating economic , political , and social life . Before accomplishing this , we must sub mit to the delay in

th r assuming our chosen professions , e so rows of separated families , and

losses on the battlefields . Will it not then be our eager hope to enjoy a post war peace and prosperity which our generation has never seen?

- r r Our responsibilities in the post wa wo ld will be numerous . Alth ough many of these tasks cann ot possibly be foreseen , still more obvious duties can be anticipated .

Perhaps the most evident of these will be the attempt to reconstruct war- torn

Europe and Asia . It is not at all improbable that many of us here today may

be chosen to endeavor to rebuild the cities , education , bodies , and minds of

e t ra Europeans and Asiatics . With what attitude shall we approach these r s o

tive tasks? Humbly and honestly, I hope , with intention to devote all our mental and spiritual strength to a titanic mission of unprecedented importance and difficulty .

This conflict has also given us a new vision of world geography , with maps

changing daily , and strange places assuming sudden importance . Al ter the a n war , we shall be obliged to le r more about the customs and inhabitants of

r us all foreign countries , regardless of their forme enmity toward and our allies .

r of These a e but a few the necessary subjects which we must teach ourselves .

' r Politically, too , our generation must be alive . Forme ly , the

l r — citizens were not a lowed to vote until they eached the age of twenty one .

This year , however , Congress is considering a bill to lower the voting age to

re ur ed eighteen , since military service is q of boys of that age . With the right

b . to vote will come many civic responsi ilities For instance , after the war , a

-a s - conservative element , with inclinations toward a business usual policy ,

r . r will , in all p obability, arise in Congress Although our count y and the entire

r world need economic and social alte ations , the political timidity of some t legislators and diplomats in his country will hold us back , if we are not pre pared to combat retarding factions . Yet how can we prevent such a calamity? By studying the facts and by wholehear tedly endeavor ing to express the hopes of the pub lic accur ately.

of - r In regard to the influence the public , Vice P esident Wallace has referred to

this age as the age of the common man . That common man , sometimes called Mr . John Q . Public , must have enough initiative to think clearly and to express his thoughts with conviction . Most people are too lethargic even to bother writing their Congressman in approval or disapproval of governmental

r r policies , so that we may be assu ed of direct rep esentation in fact , as well as 1 1 theory . Some historians believe that the peace plans of 9 8 were defeated

r . W primarily because of a lack of public inte est , initiative , and foresight e

should try to prevent a repetition cf such mistakes .

t r We must not forget , however , hat pat iotic spouting will not result in any

ra governmental reforms . Igno nt people who dogmatically offer a panacea for

'

the country s financial , international , and social difficulties , yet never buy a '

war bond or sacrifice a day s pleasure , unless under compulsion , are a dire

peril to our national advancement . L ' P ast September, in a speech to the International Students Assembly, resident Roosevelt said :

All of you young fighting people will have to take part in shaping our new

b ou world . You will earn it y what you do now; but you will not attain it if y la th leave your job for others to do alone . When you y aside your gun at e end

of the war , you cann ot at the same time , lay aside your duty to the future .

Throughout the bitter har dships which this conflict may force us to endure , we " must not lose sight of the four freedoms for which we are fighting : freedom

r r r r r of religion , f eedom of speech , f eedom f om want , and f eedom from fea .

' We G r sincerely hope with od s help , youth may aid in b inging these four

r freedoms closer in reality to all peoples ; and , by eradicating dictato ship from

r r . our period of history , create a supe ior and ennobled wo ld

r We had no cares and lived ou easy days .

We a thought not of the arduous t sks ahead ,

But rather went in joy upon our ways .

We tr avelled leisurely along the path ; — O ur foresight , short our aims , quite undefined;

And, light and varied as the flying chaff ,

The distant goals oft shifting in each mind .

Today , the path leads through a black abyss A darkened world , crammed full of grief and woe . Will God permit us to resume in bliss The peace and freedom known so long ago?

Our sear ching eyes , no simple answers find;

Our puzzled minds can find no guiding rod .

Today , the world demands a bold , keen mind

r r And cou age strong to wo k the will of God.

23 At the close of our senior year the incidents of our class history do not loom r very la ge on the horizon of tomorrow, for history of so much greater importance is being made outside our walls . Still , for a moment let us consider our three rt r c sho years at B ockton High School , whi h to us have been both s ignificant and memorable .

The class of 1 943 was destined to work under three different r headmaste s . In 1 4 1 9 Mr . E . , B . H . Ruel Tucker was completing his last year at S . while we

r . were newcomers . M Waldr o Kindig was the headmaster when we took our r h . i t e places as junio s Dur ng past year we have been guided by Mr . Ralph W .

Haskins , for whose leadership every senior is sincerely grateful .

firs t 90 2 r In our year in high school there were membe s enrolled . This spring 60 1 i there are members in the graduat ng class . Besides those boys who have

r left school to enter various branches of the se vice , th ere are ten boys and two

u r girls who left in Febr ary to be en olled in college .

Our sophomore year was a ban ner one for Brockton High School in spo ts r .

The football team won the championship of the state; the golf team , the South

; - eastern championship and the cross country team , the New

- a . Engl nd championship The next year hockey , cross country , golf and swim

ming were dropped as major sports because of finances . During our junior

a n r and senior ye rs , ma y boys participated in these as int amural sports . The 1 94 1 ootball team had me iocre seasons in an 1 942 , but in our senior year f d d , the basketball team took the limelight . They won seventeen out of nineteen

finals gam es , reached the of the Tech Tournament , but were defeated by Attle boro High School . This team was the first one from Brockton High School that

had played in the Tech Tournament since 1 936 .

' r Becau se of the war , our popular D ivers Training Course had to be discon

tinued J , 1 942 . r i in une This year the new physical fitness p ogram , which n

r cludes extensive gymnasium wo k , began . The students have also shown a

r co- r n ve y operative spirit in assisting the faculty du ing rationi g periods . Dur u ing 1 942 and 1 943 , we were fort nate in being offered the fir st aid and aviation

r courses , which attracted great inte est .

We have greatly enj oyed the social activities of our school hours , especia lly 1 943 " ' our joint socials In , the class play , Charley s Aunt , and the operetta ,

r r Trial By Iu y , showed the remarkable d amatic and musical ability of our classmates .

r our Here , at the te mination of courses at Brockton High School , we wish to express our feelings of gratitude and appreciation to all those who have made

these three years successful and unforgettable .

r r Although the history of our class is not of inte est to the est of the world , we

r of the class of 1 943 will ever emember the happy years we have spent here .

r t As we ao out to try to build our lives in this unce tain world , we shall s rive to keep our motto ever before us :

r God our Guide : Democracy our P ide . 24

A few words of praise belong to the members oi the Class of 1 943 who have succeeded in the difficult task of transferring to college in the middle of their senior year . This privilege of trans

' fer was given only to those whose scholastic r r r a f r eco ds we e outstanding . Although this pl n o entering college before graduation from high school is an innova tion brought about by the r pressure of wa , the students who have so whole heartedly worked for its success have proven it n r to be a workable a d p ofitable one . The school ha s g ood reason to be proud of the following :

— Although the Holden coached clan failed to rea ch the gridiron heights of some of its predecessors , it displayed a powerful attack which at times brought r back memories of former championship elevens . The reco d of six wins and r fou losses does not indicate the true worth of the team , three of the games

- being lost by the score of 7 6 .

u Sero ian In its initial fray , the sq ad , captained by Saco p , dropped a close a game to Quincy . The pigskin toters whipped Mi . Ple sant but lost to the power

Nashua was the next scheduled opponent , but s oggY conditions forced post r pone m ent of the affai with the New Hampshire state titlists . Brockton wound r a up by t ouncing W ltham in the Tur key Day affair .

Coa ch Holden has high hopes for a successful aggregation next year despite r the fact that many vete ans have graduated .

87 As the Year Book went to press , Coach Charles Holden and Assistant Coach Norman Nash h ad whipped into shape a ba seball team that showed great 4—0 promise by trouncing its first two opponents , Weymouth and Dorchester,

- 1 4 2 . and , respectively

A r numbe of veterans formed the nucleus of the squad , and some fine new

material was developed to fill the holes left by gradua tion last year . Early season indications were that the club possessed a number of very potent l Wetterho . willow wielders , notab ly Marrow and m , who could really tag the ball

' Excellent fielding also contributed greatly toward keeping opponents scoring

almost negligible .

r : The regula starting lineup was as follows Gene Devine at the initial sack ,

b R - r Babe Smith at second , Tu by ondeau as short , Co captain Red Go m eley at

C C . the hot spot , and onnie icione behind the plate The garden was patrolled

a r Co- L r Wetterholm by he vy hitters Bob Tor ence , captain a ry , and Columbo .

r r D Shar cz r Gene Sylveste bo e the brunt of the pitching duties , ick y and Ve ne

Norman supplying clever relief twirling . A m r triumphant j unior tea marched twice to victo y on the basketball court , by

defeating the seniors and the j uniors for the championship of the school .

th r - When e seniors had lost thei game to the sophomores by the score of 1 9 1 4 ,

a r r - j uniors . However , the l tte we e victorious to the tune of 24 1 8 . Whether the

new accelerated gym program had anything to do with the might of the juniors ,

i r it is imposs ble to say , but the seniors we e handicapped by the fact that some

r of thei best athletes were una ble to play , because of j obs requiring most of

their time out of school .

r The championship team , captained by Ma y Benton , was composed of Kay

Carol Perkins , and Janice Prin ce . N KEEPING with the nationa l swing to greater emphasis on

r — physical fitness , B ockton High School launched a far rea ching program designed to prepar e boys for future service with the

r r A my, Navy , and Marine Co ps of the United States. This step

was taken in response to a plea made by the armed forces for a more vigorous type of physical progr am in the schools and colleges of the na tion to build up resistance to combat the terrific demands made of the body

and mind in modern war fare . Another purpose was to develop the spirit of

- - give and take .

r an r Physica l Director E . Marion Robe ts d George Chambe lain first studied the situa tion carefully and mapped out a course of action which they presented r to the School Board for conside ation . The Board , realizing the need for extra r ordinary action , gave the plan its wholehea ted stamp of approval and set up r r machinery fo its speedy inaugu ation .

Acting on th e assumption that very little could be accomplished in one gym r period , the administration increased the numbe of classes to four for all boys

whose course of study permitted . Such an increase necessitated the sacrificing

of some language and study periods . A change was also seen in the type

- r r . of physical p og am Muscle building calisthenics were strongly emphasized,

rr a B . much to the so ow of the pupils who limped bout H . S . during the opening r weeks of the inaugu al with aching bodies , and complaining woefully of the

wracking tortures of the new gym sessions .

r r- Th ee to fou mile hikes were also conducted , despite the fact that shoe ration r r ing was in effect . Swimming tests we e given unde the direction of Swimming r Coach Alton Iohng en , the swimming team being discontinued because of r f r r wartime difficulties . Requi ements o passing the test we e proficiency in the r r r crawl , side stroke , breast st oke , unde wate swimming , swimming fully r f r clothed , and remaining in the wate o five minutes . On the basis of final r r results , it was found that a low pe centage of the total male en olment of or r r the senior class was unable to swim . F the small g oup who we e lacking in r r ability in this department , swimming inst uctions we e made compulsory .
