One of the jewels of Australian racing’s crown, the Caulfield Cup is now an international event, although a maiden victory in the race for Hong Kong and Mr Medici looks tempered by a heavy weight of 55 kilos on his first run after a break.

Representatives from Great Britain and Japan are also in the mix, but the forward runners will be hard to get past here so I am tempted to go for Metal Bender from an inside gate. He had outstanding 3yo form in Sydney. His most recent runs in the Group One Turnbull and Underwood Stakes were really very promising and I feel he can slot into a box-seat position from gate 2, travel and kick in the straight. He will stay the trip, no problem, and he has the class.

Herculian Prince is another likely market leader by virtue of his no-nonsense front-running style. He proved his current fitness and wellbeing with a dominant win in the Group One Metropolitan Handicap last start – for which he received a 2 kilo penalty – but he is on steep upward curve and deserves his rank near the head of the market.

Master trainer is chasing an eighth win in this great race and it is interesting that he is applying blinkers for the first time to Faint Perfume, winner of the Crown Oaks almost a year ago. Though her overall form has not been as stellar this preparation, her last start hinted at signs of a revival and the gear change could do the trick.

Shocking, last year’s Cup winner, is another who looks up against it at the weights but his draw is fine. His main agenda is obviously the Cup at Flemington again but don’t think trainer Mark Kavanagh will be happy to let a prize such as this slide past without giving it a real good shake.

Alcopop who ran a terrific second to Cox Plate hero , the best horse in the country at the moment in the Yalumba Stakes. Alcopop drops down 5.5 kilos for this test but has drawn wide and no doubt connections have an eye on the as the prime objective.
