JOB DESCRIPTION PERRIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT DISTRICT NURSE

Description of Position Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services (or designee), the school nurse develops and maintains a broad program of health education and services designed to protect, maintain and enhance the health of students. The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by identifying and remediating health related barriers that may impede the ability of students to learn Major Duties and Responsibilities  Conducts medical case findings and screenings for potential health deficits of referred students.  Conducts State and District mandated screening programs.  Interprets immunizations regulations, monitors compliance, and completes required state and county immunization reports. Administer immunizations, insulin, and medications to students.  Participates in determining the eligibility of students for special education programs by evaluating the health status of students, as necessary, making referrals to other resources when appropriate.  Articulates school health services with those of physicians, dentists, community agencies, and other resources.  Refers parents of students in need of care to appropriate agencies for medical and/or dental treatment.  Provides a program for the school and community directed towards the control of communicable diseases.  Serves as the health education resource person for staff and students.  Assists in the identification of safety and health hazards on school sites.  Provides health counseling services for parents, students and school personnel.  Monitor the maintenance of accurate health records, medication records and an accurate list of student with health conditions.  Identifies all first grade students in need of a physical examination; notifies parents; writes exclusion letters, if necessary.  Creates a confidential student health list which identifies all physical and health liabilities of students; provides this list to all staff members.  Provides emergency services for ill or injured students at school.

 Notifies parents regarding students’ illnesses, physical challenges and potential health problem; provides health counseling and referral to appropriate agencies.  Provides professional supervision of health aides at assigned work sites.  Attends staff meetings, as required.  Continues professional growth activities by attending conferences, workshops and in-services related to the health profession.  Conducts tuberculosis (TB) skin tests for all District employees.  Provides direct instruction to students in health-related subjects such as dental care, first aid, etc.  Coordinates the students’ programs on puberty including, but not limited to, obtaining all necessary materials, prior notification to parents and direct instruction for students.  Provides consultation services for staff members regarding possible child abuse cases.  Writes an annual Health Services report for the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services or designee.  Inventories health supplies at school sites; requisitions needed supplies.  Provides all staff members with a schedule of visitations at school sites.  Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services or designee with communication between the District and the community.  Assists the Home-School Liaison in providing services, as needed.  Assists personnel with periodic screenings for pediculosis (head lice).  Maintains a program of accountability and evaluation in an effort to produce visible and measurable results.  Performs other related duties as assigned. Position Requirements  Knowledge of childhood illnesses and diseases.  Knowledge of emergency first aid procedures.  Knowledge of agencies which provide medical/dental treatment.  Knowledge of instructional techniques used for students and adults.  Knowledge of testing procedures used for vision and hearing screenings.  Ability to diagnose illnesses, diseases and potential medical challenges.  Ability to provide emergency medical assistance.

 Ability to create and maintain health records.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing.  Ability to provide information in an instructional setting.  Ability to obtain and maintain required licenses.  Ability to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Working Conditions  Frequent hand-eye coordination and manipulation of large and small objects.  Frequent driving, walking, sitting, and bending.  Frequent exposure to varying weather conditions.  Occasional standing, reaching, and stretching.  Occasional pushing, pulling, and dragging.  Occasional kneeling, crouching, and squatting.  Occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.  Occasional exposure to blood-borne pathogens and/or body fluids from ill or injured students.  Requires the ability to hear at close proximity (up to five feet) and at a distance (up to twenty feet); clarity of vision at varying distances; and verbal and written communication in an articulate manner. Qualifications Education/Experience:  Associate of Science degree in registered nursing (RN).  Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.  Experience in preferred.  Bilingual / Spanish ability preferred. Required Licenses/Certificates:  Current Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate.  Current CPR certificate.  CPR and First Aid Instructor Certificates.  Certificate allowing service in the public school system.  Valid California driver’s license. 3
