On November 1, 1950, in his Apostolic Constitution “Munificentissimus Deus”, pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity from 1940 to 1950. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the . **** August 16th is the Feast of St. Joachim, father of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In some countries it is Grandfather's Day. Let us pray to St. Joachim to intercede before his grandson, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for our families to persevere. **** The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The heart of the B.V. Mary is venerated because it is united to her person and is the seat of her love, especially for her divine Son, and her virtue. This devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue. Please pray the Litany of the Immaculate Heart of Mary after your daily rosary. **** St. Hyacinth of was born in in 1185. He studied in notable cities and obtained the title of Doctor of Law and Divinity, In he met St. Dominic and entered the newly created . St. Hyacinth went throughout Northern Europe spreading the faith. He dies on August 15, 1257 and was canonized by Pope Clement VIII on April 17, 1594. His feast day is on . “The LORD is in his Holy Temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.” (Hab. 2, 20) The Life of St. Philomena. On December 21, 1833, the Holy Of- fice declared that there was nothing contrary to the Catholic faith in the revelations that Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù (1799–1875), a Dominican tertiary from Naples, claimed to have received from the Saint herself. According to Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù, Saint Philomena told her she was the daughter of a king in who, with his wife, had converted to Christianity. At the age of about 13, she took a vow of consecrated virginity. When the Emperor Diocletian threatened to make war on her father, her father went with his family to Rome to ask for peace. The Emperor "fell in love" with the young St. Philomena and, when she re- fused to be his wife, subjected her to a series of torments: scourging, from whose effects two angels cured her; drowning with an anchor at- tached to her (two angels cut the rope and raised her to the river bank); being shot with arrows, (on the first occasion her wounds were healed; on the second, the arrows turned aside; and on the third, they returned and killed six of the archers, after which, several of the others became Christians). Finally the Emperor had her decapitated. The decapitation occurred on a Friday at 3:00 PM as with the death of Jesus. The anchor, three arrows, the palm and the ivy leaf on the tiles found in the tomb were interpreted as symbols of her martyrdom. In the Neapolitan nun's account, Saint Philomena also revealed that her birthday was Janu- ary 10, that her martyrdom occurred on August 10 (the date also of the arrival of her relics in Mugnano del Cardinale), and that her name "Filumena" meant "daughter of light. On January 13, 1837, in the aftermath of the cure of Venerable Pauline Jaricot, Pope Gregory XVI authorized liturgical celebration of St. Philomena on August 11.
