KARNAL SHER KHAN CADET COLLEGE SWABI 7 D R E Captain Karnal Sher Khan (NH): The Lion of Kargil A Captain Karnal Sher Khan is an epitome of a M memorable episode of courage, heroism and gallantry. He was born in Faujoonabad near & Nawan Kalli, Swabi, on January 1, 1970. His grandfather Ghalib Khan, a freedom fighter, D had fought for liberating Kashmir from the A ruthless occupation of . At the R birth of Karnal Sher Khan, his grandfather E named him ‘Karnal Sher’: a military name with the amalgam of lion-like-bravery. Perhaps, his grandfather had visualized the great sacrifice of Karnal Sher, so he was named as ‘Karnal Sher’. Initially, Karnal Sher joined PAF as an electric fitter at Risalpur in 1990, where he underwent through rigorous training. However, due to his spirit of incessant struggle, he qualified ISSB test in 1992. Thus, he joined Kakul Academy as a gentleman cadet. Later on in 1994, he was commissioned at 27 Sindh Regiment. He performed the duties of Platoon Commander in 12 Battalion, which was positioned along the Line of Control in Gultari Sector. His company was dispensed the responsibility to defend a strategically most important post — where the enemy launched an attack with two battalions on 6 June 1999 — supported by heavy Artillery, Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers and Anti-Tank Guided Missile. Regardless of heavy enemy Artillery fire, Captain Sher exhibited extreme courage and commitment to his duty.

During this operation, he demonstrated intrepid courage and professionalism. On 5th July 1999, once again he exhibited extraordinary guts, physical and mental robustness and vigilance in discharge of his arduous duties

8 KARNAL SHER KHAN CADET COLLEGE SWABI D R under the most difficult and pressing circumstances — crushing a Battalion size attack of enemy by his company. E Similarly, on the night of 7-8 June, 1999, he blocked enemy penetration of almost a Battalion and wreaked fatal blows on A infiltration parties of enemy with very high casualties. Nonetheless his personal safety, he once again launched M another devastating attack on the enemy. In the meantime, the enemy’s light machine gun opened up fire, and he sustained multiple injuries. Notwithstanding of his wounds, he kept on firing on the enemy and once again severely & disrupted their attack. But during the operation, Captain Sher was hit with a number of bullets on his chest and one on his forehead, and thereby, this brave son of the soil embraced “Shahadat” in the battlefield. Even the Indian Army D were so impressed from the bravery, audacity and fearlessness of Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed that they A sent “a note of praise” with the body of Karnal Sher Khan suggesting that he deserved the highest military award. R The in recognition of Captain Karnal Sher Khan’s bravery, indomitable courage and strong E will-power awarded him the highest military award on 14th August 1999.

He is a graduate of Command and Staff College Quetta, School of Artillery Nowshera, and qualified in Information D Operation Course from US 1st Operations Command. He completed his BSc from the University of Baluchistan and A did MSc in Military Sciences from the University of Peshawar. R E He has 30 years’ experience of service in Arms along the Line of Control, Siachen, FATA and Baluchistan, Doctrinal Publications, production of Training Documentaries for Pak Army and Evaluation of Formations and Institutions are to his credit. In addition, he was also assigned duty to plan and conduct conferences on National Security and Policy making at National Defense University Islamabad and General Headquarters Rawalpindi. Besides conduction of high level visits of Foreign Military Delegates, he has earned wide appreciation from International community during his employment on United Nations Missions abroad in Coted’ ivore.

Karnal Sher Khan Shahhed (NH) is one such lion-hearted hero who fought audaciously during the Kargil Conflict and embraced martyrdom. Evidently, he & displayed courage, selflessness, and strong tenacity which would always be an inspiration for the whole D Pakistani nation. Karnal Sher Khan Cadet College A Swabi was established in order to commemorate the R commendable sacrifice exhibited by the proud son of E the soil, Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed (NH). The College commenced its first academic session in 2011, and soon attained a unique position of prestige by producing individuals who achieved multi-pronged landmarks in both curricular and co-extra-curricular activities. Owing to its endeavours to achieve academic excellence, the College has achieved, several times, the title of the “Best Institution in BISE Mardan”. Sherians have always been successful to grab top positions in Mardan Board. Besides, positions in the Board, one of our cadets got 2nd position in entire in ETEA conducted in 2019. Similarly, the ex-cadets of the College have been able to secure admission at well-known and prestigious institutions like LUMS, NUST, KMU, GIKI, and UET Peshawar. Moreover, two of the ex-cadets of the College were awarded at Pakistan Naval Academy: one was conferred upon “the Sword of Honour” while another was honoured with the “Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee Gold Medal”. Furthermore, another ex-cadet was selected, in the cutthroat competition on the international level, at Royal Academy Australia for military training. Hence, our cadets have excelled in all fields of life and have been a source of pride for the College in particular, and for the country in general.

KARNAL SHER KHAN CADET COLLEGE SWABI 19 D R E Campus A M Houses/ Hostels The College has two academic blocks, college mosque, & residential colony for staff and 6 cadet houses/hostels each with a capacity of 100 cadets. Every House is being looked after by a House Master, assisted by Asst House D Master, Military Staff and House Baba. A R Cadet’s Messes E The College has two spacious cadet messes, each with a capacity of 300 cadets. One cadet from each class is member of College Mess Committee which meets frequently to discuss menu and ways of improving the messing standard.

College Hospital The College has a well-equipped 20 bed Hospital and an ambulance under the supervision of Senior Medical Offi- cer, assisted by dispensers. Cadets with serious ailments are referred to C.M.H Mardan/Peshawar.

Amenities The College has a well-furnished cafeteria with adequate services besides, Tailor, Barber, Cobbler, Stationery Shop, Utility Store and Post Office/ATM to provide every possible facility at the campus.

It is located M on the main Mardan-Swabi road, approximately midway between Mardan (23 Km) and Swabi (25 Km). It can also be accessed from & Grand Trunk Road through Nowshera-Mardan and from Swabi, Karnal Sher Khan interchanges on the Motor Way (M1) and is at a short distance of 3 Km from main Swat Express way. KARNAL SHER KHAN CADET COLLEGE SWABI 21 D R E Curriculum A The College follows the syllabus laid down by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Mardan. The medium of instruction is English. The subjects taught in the College at SSC level are Urdu, English, Islamiyat, M Pakistan Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Biology. The College offers Pre-Medical and Pre- Engineering courses for Intermediate classes. The laboratories are equipped with the latest apparatus. & Class tests and terminal examinations are planned at regular intervals. Cadet’s progress is assessed and a complete record of their academic performance and overall conduct is sent to the parents at the end of each D term. A cadet failing in any exam is liable to be expelled from the College. Visits are scheduled to various institutions and places of historical importance. & Sports. Sports form an integral part of training of cadets. Regular Inter-House, D Senior and Junior Competitions, both indoor and outdoor, (Hockey, A Football, Cricket, Basketball, Athletics, Table Tennis, Badminton) are R conducted for grooming and physical fitness of cadets. Annual sports fixtures are also organized with the sister institutions. E

Physical Training. Games, Sports and PT/ Drill are compulsory for cadets. The College has a spacious and well equipped Gymnasium and gymnastic equipment for physical training and indoor games/ sports.

Clubs and Societies. Various Clubs and Societies, i.e. Arts Club, Photographic Club, Science Club, Dramatic Club, Computer Club, Urdu and English Debat- ing Societies are in place to develop skill, knowledge and confidence of cadets.

Riding Club. It is established, to provide support and encouragement to amateur riders at College level. The College riding club gives cadets the chance to ride, compete and train together at College competitions, training and social events

24 KARNAL SHER KHAN CADET COLLEGE SWABI D Miscellaneous R E Pocket Money A A monthly pocket money of Rs 800/- and Rs 1000/- is paid to junior and M senior cadets respectively. Cadets are not permitted to keep money which exceed their monthly pocket allowance. Any extra cash that they might have, is handed over to the respective Housemaster for safe custody. &

Leave Prior granting leave, a written application should be processed by the par- D ents to the College administration. Leave other than the holidays is only A authorized by the College and it will not be granted except in exceptional R circumstances. No leave will be granted for attending the family func- E tions, except one working day leave for the wedding of real brothers and sisters. Parents are requested to plan all such events during the holidays.

Weekend / Leave Cadets can avail only a fixed number of weekends. Parents / guardians are required to forward the name and address of the relative/ friend with whom the cadet will spend his weekend. The cadets overstaying leave without valid reason shall be fined or punished.

Journey to College / Home Parents / guardians should arrange journey of their sons/ wards for going home and returning to the College.

Accidents/ Mishaps. All possible measures for the safety of cadets are adopted at the campus. However, the College shall not be held responsible for any kind of accident/ mishap causing any kind of physical harm or injury to the cadet.

KARNAL SHER KHAN CADET COLLEGE SWABI 25 D R Visitors E Parents/ guardians are allowed to visit their sons/ wards only on Sundays / A Holidays as per following timings: M 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (October to March) & 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (April to September)

D A NOTE: R Parents are not allowed to visit rooms of cadets except on Parents Day. They are also not allowed to visit the staff at their residences. Parents can meet the E House Masters in their offices on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon or on a mutu- ally convenient date and time if the circumstances so demand.

College Rules

Academic Promotion Criteria: Following criteria will be applied: a. 65 % marks in each subject shall be considered Passing Marks for all Home Examinations conducted by the College. b. A cadet who fails in more than one subject in two terminal examinations or Annual Examination shall be detained in the same class. c. Any Cadet securing less than 70 % marks in the Pre-Board / Send up exams shall not be allowed to appear in the Board Exam and will be detained in the same class.

32 KARNAL SHER KHAN CADET COLLEGE SWABI D R ADMISSIONS E A Eligibility & Selection Procedure Class VIII M • Age of a candidate should be 12 to 14 years on 1st April of the year of admission. • Candidates who have passed Class VII at the time of admission. Students studying & in class VIII are also eligible. • Candidates will be examined in English, Mathematics, Urdu & Islamiat during the entrance test. D Eligibility & Selection Procedure Class XI A • Age of a candidate should be15 to 17 years on 1st July of the year of admission. R • Candidates who have passed Class X with minimum of 80% marks, or have appeared in the Class X board E examinations can apply with the certificate from head of the institution that the candidate is most likely to secure over 80% marks. • Candidates will be examined in English, Mathematics / Biology, Physics and Chemistry and Urdu during the entrance test. • Students studying in first year and registered in any BISE are not eligible.

Entrance Examination & Allocation of Seats Entrance Tests are planned at Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, D.I.Khan, Kohat, Abottabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Quetta and Karachi. However minimum of twenty five candidates are required for a station to be declared as center otherwise the candidates will be allotted the next nearest center. Admission will be granted purely based on the merit after written examination, interview and medical examination.

Candidates selected under this scheme will be required to pay Rs. 250000.00 (non refundable), for admission to class & XI and Rs. 400000.00 (non refundable) for admission to class VIII over and above the other fees/dues at the time of admission only. Pattern of Papers Pattern of papers is flexible. However, questions are selected in accordance with the general standards laid down for various classes to allow equal opportunities to all the candidates taking exam from different parts of the country. The candidates for the first year shall be tested according to the syllabus of 10th class.An outline syllabus for the written test for 8th class is provided as a guideline.

SYLLABUS WRITTEN TEST - CLASS VIII English • Parts of Speech including Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives, Forms of Verbs, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Articles and Punctuation. • Correct/ rearrange/ complete sentences. • Meaning of Words/ Idioms and their use in sentences. • Correct spellings. • Change sentences into interrogative and negative forms. • Antonyms/ Synonyms, Singular and Plural. • Gender.

Islamiyat (English Medium) • Human rights, Ethics, Life of the Holy Prophet (SAW). • Pillars of Islam, Islamic Society, Patience and Tolerance. • Avoiding Prodigality and Avarice. Thrift/ Frugality. • Dignity of Labour, Lawful earning, Moderation. • Generosity, Equality, Prayers, Worships, Adoration.

D Religious Training A Regular prayers, observance of fast in the Holy month of Ramazan, adherence to the Islamic code of life, honesty R and truthfulness form the corner stones of religious motivation/ grooming. Religious instructions are imparted in the E class rooms, mosque and morning assembly.

LITERARY & CULTURAL ACTIVITIES A fine blend of cultural and literary activities for each class is planned. The topics/subjects for Junior and Senior classes are published in the weekly College Order. Cadets are encouraged to express their views on various topics to build their confidence. The college provides them ample opportunities to prepare topics from the books which broaden their mental horizon, knowledge and learning. Inter-House Urdu, English Debates/ Declamations, Essay Writing, Qirat and Quiz Competitions are also scheduled to put the cadets through a variety of activities. Culture and talent are harnessed and promoted.

COLLEGE FEE/ DUES

1. Fee/Dues of Cadets. a. Payment under following heads (amount/charges shall be fixed/revised from time to time) are pay able only once at the time of admission in 8th or 1st Year classes:

Procedure : a. College dues will be remitted full, either in cash or by crossed Bank Draft in favour of Principal, Karnal E Sher Khan Cadet College, Swabi (Payee account only) payable to Allied Bank Ismaila Branch Code # 0118. b. Full name and kit number of the Cadet should be stated in the covering letter to facilitate correct accounting / acknowledgement. c. A period of 30 days from the date of dispatch shall be allowed for payment of dues. If dues are not paid by the due date, penalty for late payment charges is as under:- (1) Rs 50/- per day for first 10 days (2) Rs 100/- per day for next 10 days (3) Rs 150/- per day for next 10 days (4) If the fee is not received within 60 days of due date, the student name will be struck off from College Roll. (5) Readmission, if approved by the competent authority, will be charged @ Rs 2,000/- (Rupees two thousand only) in addition to the above penalty.
