Sermons for May 2019 New Sermon Series: “Pastor’s Farewell Tour” The Pastor’s last 9 Sundays cover important subjects that he wants you to know before saying Auf Wiedersehen.

Sunday, May 5 (Family Sunday, Holy Communion, Confirmation & New Members Sun- day) “Where Do We Go from Here?” John 14:6-14 2019 A good future is enhanced by a strong past. God stories from John Wesley’s life are amazing and reveal our spiritual DNA. We have opportunity to build strong God stories in our own lives, so that we can know clearly where we do go from here.

Sunday, May 12 (Mother’s Day) “How to Hear God in Scripture” Luke 1:46-55 “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world” is a poem published in 1865. Of first importance in child rearing is to teach our children how to hear from God, and Scrip- ture is the primary source for that. This morning we will receive an introduction to “SOAP,” a simple and powerful way for the Bible to come alive in your life and in the life of your children.

Sunday, May 19 (Graduation Sunday, Baccalaureate @ 3pm at Blessed Trinity ) “There Are No Solo ” Ecclesiastes 4:7-12 70% to 80% of Christian youth leave the church when they leave for college. Adults have

the same problem. A firebrand of wood loses its flame fairly quickly when removed from the rest of the wood in the fire. There is power in small groups who support you, par- ticularly when you don’t think you need their support. That’s why I have an accountabil- ity person. God’s fire is way too valuable to risk extinguishing.

Sunday, May 26 ( Sunday) “Giving and Receiving Forgiveness” Matthew 6:9-14 Memorial Day emerged shortly after the Civil War to reconcile our nation on the basis of giving and receiving forgiveness. Immediately after the Lord’s in Matthew 6 Je- sus comments on only one thing from that prayer. That one thing is so important that Jesus said God would not forgive us if we did not practice it.

Mission Bell Sunday, June 2 (Family Sunday, Holy Communion) “God’s Secret Source of Wisdom and Power” John 15:1-11 Sandy and I have renewed our commitment to get into healthy shape in body, soul, and spirit. Going to the YMCA on a regular basis, eating healthy foods (Sunday is a free day each week to pig out – everyone needs a Sabbath), and having a regular Quiet Time to- gether and on our own all seem like a daunting task. Actually, God’s source of wisdom A Stephen Ministry Congregation and power is not a secret. It’s a commitment we make every day to draw closer to God. The “secret” is to let it sink in just how important God’s wisdom and power are – that it’s worth the effort, like breathing. Frankenmuth United Methodist Church Page 2 A DOUBLE INVITATION Plans are under way for the Farewell and Welcome events for our Pastors. 1. June 30th will be Pastor Karls and Sandy’s final Sunday here. We are sending them off with a Farewell Potluck Brunch following service. 2. July 14th will be Pastor Wenburg and family’s second Sunday. We are throwing a Frankenmuth Wel- come Lunch after the service. Plan to attend!

NATIONAL , THURSDAY, MAY 2, FRANKENMUTH CITY HALL @ 12NOON Every year on the first Thursday in May people gather at their local government center to pray for our na- tion, state, and local community in 7 specific areas that determine our future. A person who works in each specific area leads in prayer for that area, and then everyone prays for a short time in small groups for that area before moving to the next area. In the military this is a principle of war called “Concentration of Force” that provides dramatic results even in spiritual warfare. This is open to the public. Please come to pray for our community and nation. This is sponsored by St. Lorenz Lutheran, Blessed Trinity Catholic, Frankenmuth Bible, Hope Community, St. Martin Lutheran, and Frankenmuth United Methodist churches.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, THURSDAY, MAY 2, SAGINAW KINGDOM LIFE MINISTRY FROM 7 PM TO 9 PM Over 30 Saginaw area churches have participated in a much larger prayer gathering in the evening of the Na- tional Day of Prayer for the past 14 straight years. Music and declarations are added that extend the time. The first 12 years were at the Dow Event Center. This is the 2nd year in a local church. This year’s gathering is at Kingdom Life Ministry, an African-American church who bought the former Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church building (corner of S. Jefferson and Janes, directly across the street from Hoyt Library). If you love lively music (yet music that is known to most of us) and love our community, give this a try.

MAY 30 – JUNE 2 IS ANNUAL CONFERENCE The Annual Conference of the newly combined Michigan Area Conference of the United Methodist Church and it is held in Traverse City, Michigan. Please be in prayer for our delegates Ann Graham and Charles All- port, and alternate delegate Charlie Graham. It has been a difficult year for our denomination as we re-focus on the future together. Page 3 LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU... In John 15:12, Jesus says, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” loving and caring for one another is not just the pastor’s job—it is something Jesus calls us all to do! Stephen Ministry is a ministry in which people with special gifts for caring ministry can put those gifts to use in an organized way, bringing Jesus’ love and care to those who most need it. If you know someone who is going through a difficult time, contact one of our Stephen Leaders, Linda Mawer @ 989-780-2115 or Pastor Mark Karls @ 989-652-6858. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide focused, confidential, one-to-one Christian care—to help that person experience the healing power of Christ’s love. LUNCH BUNCH GATHERING PROGRAM CHANGE The Lunch Bunch will meet on May 21st in the Gathering Space at noon as usual. We have had a change of plans for the program. The Koch’s will not be able to talk to us about Dog Sled Racing in Alaska as was planned. However we were able to get Tim Crawford to make a presentation on the Co- chlear Implant including a video. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY TO HELP OUR NEW PASTOR’S FAMILY The Children’s Ministry is seeking volunteers to work one-on-one with Pastor Ryan’s youngest child Isaiah. You would assist him during Club Orange while he participates with the other children during activities. Sundays that don’t include Club Orange would find you taking Isaiah to the Nursery/Family Area to play when he needed a break from church. If you are a member of our church, enjoy working with children, have lots of patience and are willing to submit paperwork for a background check and attend Safe Sanctuary training we would love to hear from you! Contact Lisa by May 15th at 517.648.9166. CHILDREN’S MINISTRY UPDATE Summer is coming closer and with it we will see some changes to our schedule! BREAD PAN MAY 2019 For years the Frankenmuth United Methodist Church has been supporting the Haiti Hot Lunch Program. For several important reasons the General Board of Global Ministries no longer recognizes the Haiti Hot Lunch Program as an Advance Special. The Mission team considered several Haiti children’s programs and decided on Grace Children’s Hospital for the May Bread Pan offering. Grace Children’s Hospital in Port Au Prince, Haiti has also been cho- sen to receive the 2019 Annual Conference Offering. Grace Children’s Hospital, founded in 1967, is recognized as Haiti’s leading medical facility dedicated to the treatment of children with tuberculosis (TB). Each year, the hospital receives thousands of children who are suffering from TB, HIV, and other chronic diseases. Most children receive treatment through the many out-patient treatment centers around the country. Some of the services provided are pre- natal care, vaccinations, vision testing/eye care, reproductive health services and nutrition awareness. The hospital determines fees for outpatient services on a sliding scale based on the patient’s income. No one is ever turned away because they are unable to pay. The contributions from The Michigan Conference will help provide charitable care services. We invite you to transform the world of the families in Haiti.

The April Bread Pan was taken for the Rescue Mission of Saginaw. As of this time we have collected $751.38. This Mission has provided over 42,000 nights of emergency shelter for men, women and children last year thanks to the help of donors and volunteers like you.

Our collection for the Hope and Tote project proved to be very, very generous. Thank you all for your time and effort to help provide for those needy persons.

ATTENTION SUMMER CAMPERS—3RD GRADE THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL If you are interested in making new friends, getting out of the house and learning silly camp songs you might want to consider Christian Camping this summer. Many Camps have a sports theme, some are all about music and drama and some are a general camp with kids your same age.

It has been our tradition here at FUMC to make an investment in the kids who would like to attend summer Camp by assisting the families with half the cost of Camp. I would encourage anyone interested in attending a Christian Camp this summer to check out the websites of the various Camps affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Please contact Susanne Niedrich @ 989-624-4939 with any questions regarding Summer Camp.

Cancer—Now What? It’s Working! Many members of our congregation have given the book Cancer—Now What? to their friends and family diagnosed with cancer to help guide them on their most unwelcome journey. Books continue to be available in the narthex for you to give to those with cancer and their loved ones. Keep up the good work of showing that you care and FUMC does too!

Church Office will be closed on Monday, May 27 in obser- vance of Memorial Day.

Beginning May 28, the office will be open Monday-Thursday 8:30-3:00 and Friday 8:30-12:30 for the summer. Page 7

E1 UPDATE Happy May...flowers are blooming and the children are excited for the warm weather ahead. Some happen- ings at E1...for the last 3 Mondays we have had 18 kids com in our doors. It has been loud and challenging, but we have enjoyed it. April 26th we got together and had lunch and did painting projects. We’re still setting up tables and chairs for the Lunch Bunch and we set up for the last Lent dinner. Thank you for your contin- ued support.

Kristy Haskell JR. HIGH AND SENIOR HIGH YOUTH Spring is in the air and May is finally here. Our junior high have learned about the meaning of Lent. We talked about the different colors of jelly beans and what they mean, and the meaning it gives to us. We also made Resurrection eggs. On Palm Sunday we worked on cards to give to the residents at Cove- nant Glen.

Our senior high have been busy too. Recently we did a project at the McNally House in Saginaw. We made sloppy joes, provided chips and cookies and a case of water for the people that stay there when they have a loved one in Covenant Hospital. If you haven’t seen the McNally House, you should go. We were quite im- pressed. Our next service project is May 5th when we will be offering a Pancake breakfast to help raise money for the youth to attend Rock the Island this summer and the One Week One Street project which we are hoping to do altogether with the congregation on June 27th. Mark your calendar! Thank you for your continued support and as we work to build our youth program.

Kristy Haskell Page 8 NATIVE AMERICAN MINISTRIES SUNDAY MAY 5TH We all familiar with the12 Tribes of Israel, but I doubt that anyone knows all the names of the 566 Federally recognized Native American tribes. Of the 5.2M Native Americans, there are more than 21,000 Native American people in the United Methodist Church. Several FUMC members are of Native American de- scent, do you know who they are? May 5th has been set aside to celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday. We will receive a special offer- ing that directly supports Native American congregations and enables them to authentically minister with their communities while honoring creative expressions of culture and heritage. The offering also provides scholarships for Native American seminary students, as well as, funds to expand the Native American Urban Initiative in target cities. Nearly 1/3 of single-race Native Americans live in poverty, the highest of any group. This offering is very important to help lift the lives of America’s First People. Did you know that there are 9 UMC Native American Churches in Michigan? During your travels this sum- mer you might want to take time to attend a Sunday service at one of these churches. The Listening Session is your opportunity to help Pastor Ryan to know our church and help him understand your dreams of how our church will carry out Christ’s mission of transforming the world, through Christ, by making and being Christ’s disciples. Pastor Ryan will listen to your views of where we are and where we ought to be in the Frankenmuth United Methodist Church. If you are available, please plan to attend and participate in at least one of the sessions.

WHAT’S “THE BOM”? What is the BOM? It’s our new Board of Ministries. When did we get it? Council formed it in the April meeting. What does it do? This Board executes a plan for FUMC to make new disciples (our mission). Who is it accountable to? Council Who is on it? Leaders of active ministry groups: Pastor, Worship, Music, Child, Student & Adult Discipleship, VCI, Prayer, KMT, Missions, Stephen Ministry, UMW & consultants as needed. Are they all on Council? Almost all. Who is the chair? The pastor or his appointee (1 of the discipleship team leaders). Sandy Karls is organizing it until July 1, when Pastor Ryan will take over. When does it meet? As needed...more often to organize and less after it’s a well-oiled team. You can ask Sandy Karls any other questions.

As we prepare to support our confirmands, let us all remember our baptism by praying: Lord, As I enter the water to bathe, I remember my baptism. Wash me by your grace. Fill me with your Spirit. Renew my soul. I pray that I might live as your child today, And honor you in all that I do. Page 10 FROM THE TRUSTEES – team members: Chairperson Connie Coulter, Vice-Chairperson David Calla- han, Secretaries Cheryl Loeffler and Shaun Sahr along with Greg Sahr, Ben Graham, Jim Halverson, Norm Reming- ton, Chuck Palmer, Stan Tuckwell and Tara Totten.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among your- selves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:5-6

Here is an update from the Trustees. Working with the Finance Committee and Ad Council we have re- ceived approval to maintain and improve our properties. Great team work! We appreciate all the questions and concerns raised as we seek to find the best solution! See something … tell a trustee!

Parsonage bathroom and kitchen upgrades have started! Thank you to the volunteer demolition team that carefully removed old cabinets and fixtures preparing the way for Scott Lutz of Lutz Kitchen & Bath Design to begin his work. Cabinets have been ordered. A new front door and appliances are being selected. Trus- tees are looking for help with lots of preparation and painting. If you are able to help, please contact Jim Halverson or Connie Coulter. The goal is to have the project completed by June 14th .

A new roof for the church was approved at the April 9th Ad Council meeting. Chuck Harrington Home Improvement provided the lowest bid and included a Certainteed 30 year warranty on the Landmark Pro shingles. This is a project that has been worked on by many trustees since 2010! THANK YOU for all the terrific work in keeping the leaks to a minimum! We have learned so much about roofs, vents, insulation, and the many steps it takes to fund a project of this size.

An inspection of our parking lot was completed by Pyramid Paving & Contracting Co. of Bay City, MI. He complimented FUMC on the maintenance historically completed on the parking lot as they found no signs of severe deterioration. With continued proper maintenance (hot rubber crack sealing and sealcoating) the parking lot is expected to last another 5-10 years. Estimated cost to completely replace it is currently $116,204. Time to start saving money for this large project!

Heating issues are being resolved! An estimate on a new boiler was obtained at a cost $30,000. Luckily our current boiler is keeping things warm but we wanted to get a current estimate so monies can be saved up for its eventual replacement.

Outdoor cleanup and sparkle crew are getting ready to ramp up their contributions of time and energy. Many thanks to Ken Worley for his walk around the grounds and recommendations.

Many thanks to Dawn Swartz, wife of St. Lorenz principal who lived in our Parsonage while they shopped for a home, provided services/labor of several teachers and parents on Friday, April 26th as part of their Grandparents’ Day service project. What a generous way to show their appreciation for use of our Parsonage.

Our new chairs are sustaining some damage to them during the stacking process. The chairs came highly recommended but we have learned that they had no need to stack them. We are exploring repair options. PLEASE stack the chairs carefully to help reduce the need for repair or replacement!

Thank you for your continued help with closing doors and shutting off lights when leaving an area of the church as we continue to try to lower our energy bills. MAY 2019
