Mary Alice Negley Baldinger was born on August 23, 1908 in Butler, Pennsylvania. A graduate of Thiel College and Columbia University, she married Wilbur Baldinger in 1937. Ms. Baldinger served as executive director of the National Civil Liberties Clearing House, a voluntary association of independent national organizations promoting civil liberties and human rights, from 1949 until 1971, when the Clearing House discontinued operations.

Wilbur Baldinger was born on November 30, 1906 in Spokane, Washington. A newspaperman in Pennsylvania in the thirties, he worked as editor of The Guild Reporter from 1941 until 1944. He held a number of other reporting jobs, including labor reporter for Newsweek, before taking over as director of publications for the U. S. Conference of Mayors in 1961, until his retirement in 1971. He died on August 18, 1976.

The papers of Wilbur and Mary Alice Baldinger contain minutes, correspondence, reports, articles, clippings and other publications documenting Ms. Baldinger’s career with the National Civil Liberties Clearing House and Mr. Baldinger’s journalistic activities and writings. Also included are Mr. Baldinger’s reference files for a directory of extremist right-wing organizations he had hoped to publish.
