An Overview 2016 -2017 Philippine Bicentennial Sacred Heart Spirituality Speakers' Series

In 2018, we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Saint Philippine's arrival and missionary venture in America, signifying 200 years of Sacred Heart education in America, 200 years of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, and 200 years of the Society of the Sacred Heart's charism of internationality. It is our wish to make the whole two-year “Philippine Bicentennial Series” inspiring, informative, memorable, and worthy of Saint Philippine.

In anticipation of the Bicentennial, the three 2016-2017 speakers in the Spirituality Series will focus on Philippine's biography (areas listed below). During the following year, the 2017-2018 series will explore more aspects of Philippine Duchesne’s life to enhance our understanding and deepen our love of our American foundress.

FIRST FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2016 ~ ~ Sister Margaret Munch, RSCJ A Guided Tour of Old St. Ferdinand: the First Sacred Heart Convent Built and Inhabited by Saint Philippine Duchesne in America

We will meet that morning at 9:30 am at Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant for Sister Margaret Munch’s tour of and lecture on the 1819 convent and school, established by Saint Philippine after her first year at Saint Charles. Recently restored to reflect the time of Saint Philippine, this was her home longer than any other in America—14 years. This will be a wonderful way to begin our two-year Saint Philippine Bicentennial Sacred Heart Spirituality Series.

In addition, luncheon will be available immediately following at nearby Hendel's Restaurant, if you choose. Make your reservation by Tuesday, November 1 with Cathie Ott at [email protected], indicating if you plan to come for only the tour or both the tour and the no-host luncheon. We do plan to make a reservation to help accommodate our group. 11:30 Mass at the Shrine is optional.

Margaret Munch, RSCJ, grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and attended Duchesne Academy for high school and Duchesne College. She entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1956 and has taught mainly language arts and religion at and Woodlands, both in the area, and at the Academy in Saint Charles for the past 55 years. During her time at Sheridan Road, she felt it was important to give the students an appreciation of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and of their historical heritage. For ten years, after thorough study of Saint Philippine’s life, Sister Munch led three day pilgrimages for her students to the Shrine and Academy in Saint Charles, Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant, and Villa Duchesne. Currently she is semi-retired with more time to conduct tours at the Academy, Old St. Ferdinand Shrine, and Sugar Creek, Kansas. She is on the board at Old St. Ferdinand Shrine.

FIRST FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2017 ~ ~ Sister Lyn Osiek, RSCJ The Biographer's Biography: Louise Callan, RSCJ, Biographer of Philippine -- Her Story

Based on her recent research and new biography, entitled Louise Callan, RSCJ (1893-1966): Historian and Biographer of Philippine Duchesne (iUniverse, 2015), Sister Lyn Osiek, RSCJ, will speak on Mother Callan, Philippine scholar and author of the classic biography, Philippine Duchesne (1957). Sister Osiek will present "the life of a remarkable RSCJ without whose love of Philippine we would be impoverished." Lyn's book is available at iUniverse.com and at Amazon.com.*

Sister Osiek is the Archivist for the Society of the Sacred Heart, US-Canada Province, and Charles Fischer Professor of New Testament emerita of the Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas. She holds a doctorate in New Testament and Christian Origins from Harvard University and is a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association and the Society of Biblical Literature. An alumna of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Saint Charles, Sister Osiek has taught at the Sacred Heart Schools at Grand Coteau, Louisiana; Newton Country Day Academy, Newton, Massachusetts; and Villa Duchesne. In addition, she has served on the board of trustees at the Sacred Heart Schools at Sheridan Road and the Josephinum, Chicago, Illinois; Duchesne Academy, Houston, Texas; the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Saint Charles; as well as Barat College, Lake Forest, Illinois; Maryville University; and the University of San Diego, California. She is the author of biographies on Mother Kathryn Sullivan, RSCJ of Manhattanville College and on Mother Louise Callan, RSCJ, Professor of History at Maryville, biographer of Saint Philippine Duchesne. She is now working on an edition of the complete writings of Philippine.

FIRST FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 2017 ~ ~ Jane Shannon Cannon Academy of the Sacred Heart: A Legacy of Love and Learning

In anticipation of the 200th Birthday of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Saint Charles, Jane Cannon will explore the Academy history, based upon her research and subsequent book, entitled Academy of the Sacred Heart: A Legacy of Love and Learning. Following Jane’s presentation, we plan to make available this informative and valuable history for purchase and autographing by the author. Publication dates and information TBA.

Included in this history are fifteen chapters of actual history (gleaned from a variety of sources), a chapter of sketches of some of the most memorable RSCJ associated with the Academy in Saint Charles (beginning, of course, with Philippine and her four traveling companions in 1818). There is a chapter of lyrics of Sacred Heart songs, a chapter of quotes about Saint Charles from former students and from nuns who taught there, and two of "Timelines of the Legacy: the buildings we lived in, the clothes we wore." There are also about twenty side bars, which deal with topics such as various statues, traditions, and personalities peculiar to the school in Saint Charles and many, many photographs.

Jane recently retired from the Academy after holding a variety of positions there for 41 years. Her Sacred Heart experience includes four years at “old” Maryville in the 1950s. She taught Latin and English at Parkway Central High School for two and a half years before retiring to stay home and raise five children. Jane continues to “hang out” at the Academy now on a volunteer basis, finishing this book, helping her successor/alumni director ease into her role, writing various things that are needed there, and serving on the Bicentennial Planning Committee.

~~~~~~ The Sacred Heart Spirituality Speakers Series is sponsored by the Mums of Alums at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School for the benefit of the entire Sacred Heart family. This series represents the Mums’ effort to participate in the stewardship of the vision of Saint Madeleine Sophie—a second sowing of the Sacred Heart mission by parents who gave to their children the gift of Sacred Heart education and who continue to cherish Life at the Sacred Heart. All are most welcome!
Cuvée Bicentennaire In celebration of the Academy’s bicentennial in 2018, a special wine is being produced and made available for purchase. French winemaker Jean-Louis Chave, husband of Erin Cannon Chave ’85, is overseeing production of a Cuvée Bicentennaire. The Chaves live one hour’s drive from Grenoble, France, the birthplace of St. Philippine Duchesne. The Chave family has been growing grapes and making wine in this region in France since 1481. Our bicentennial wine will be Chave’s Côtes du Rhône—commonly subtitled “Mon Coeur.” It will be sold in 6-bottle cases for $180, and delivered to the Academy. Please note that the wine will NOT be shipped to other destinations in the United States, and must be picked up from the Academy when its arrival is announced.
