(Marie) Lous Baronian [email protected] Second Reader: student number: 11927364 dr. A.M. (Abe) Geil Master Media Studies (Film Studies) University of Amsterdam Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to thank Marie Baronian for her first-rate supervision and constant support. Throughout this process she inspired and encouraged me, which is why she plays an important part in the completion of my thesis. I would also like to thank Veerle Spronck and Rosa Wevers, who proved that they are not only the best friends, but also the best academic proof-readers I could ever wish for. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude towards my classmate and dear friend Moon van den Broek, who was always there for me when I needed advice (or just a hug) during these months, even though she had her own thesis to write too. Abstract The journey of ‘coming of age’ has been an inspiring human process for writers and filmmakers for centuries long, as its narrative format demonstrates great possibilities for both pedagogy and entertainment. The transformation from the origins of the genre, the German Bildungsroman, to classic coming-of-age cinema in the 1950s and 1980s in America saw few representational changes. Classic coming-of-age films relied heavily on the traditional Bildungsroman and its restrictive cultural norms of representation. However, in the present Age of Activism recent coming-of-age films seem to break with this tendency and broaden the portrayal of identity formation by incorporating diversity in its representations.

International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

  • CORE 301: Modes of Inquiry Professor William Handley Sex, Church, and State This Course Will Explore How and Why
CORE 301: Modes of Inquiry Professor William Handley Sex, Church, and State This course will explore how and why the “natural” and the “national” come together in culture, religion, and law to regulate sex and define gender, often through heterosexual marriage. This conjoining of nature and nation through various cultural and religious assumptions has often complicated the meanings of religion and sex, and of what counts as “good” forms of either. By exploring and historicizing instances of traditional and non-traditional marital forms – heterosexual monogamy, polygamy, and gay marriage – we will at the same time explore the contingent meanings of such terms as “religion”, “nation,” “law,” and the “natural.” One of the central questions of the course is: why has marriage been considered “the cornerstone of civilization” and why have other forms as vastly different as same-sex and polygamous marriage been deemed a potentially fatal threat to civilization itself? In exploring this question, we will examine the relationships among private property, sexuality, and religion – and how they are manifest in everything from clothing to war-making. As we read and view across genres – court decisions, theory, novels, films, among them – one of the central aims of the course will be to explore how different kinds of discourse and forms of representation reveal and conceal the cultural relationships between private and public, between sexuality and law, and between marriage and nation, relationships that these discourses and representations also serve to construct, reinforce, or remake. • Hollywood: Her Story February 2020 Enewsletter Oscar Wrap Up
Hollywood: Her Story February 2020 ENewsletter Oscar Wrap Up The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this year’s Oscar winners! Let’s take a look at how the women fared in this 92nd year of Oscar history. Let’s celebrate the women who took home the acting Oscars. Renee Zellweger has received four acting Oscar nominations, including two Oscar wins. She received the Best Actress Oscar this year for her performance as Judy Garland in Judy. After two other acting nominations, Laura Dern received the Best Supporting Actress award this year for Marriage Story. Kwak Sin Ae shared a Best Picture Oscar for Parasite, which won for Best Picture and for Best International Feature Film. Women have been historically strong in a number of categories. In Best Costume Design, Jacqueline Durran received her seventh nomination this year and her second Oscar win for Little Women. Anne Morgan and Vivian Baker shared their first Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Bombshell. In Best Production Design, Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh won for Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. Nancy Haigh has another Oscar win and six other nominations under her belt. It can be argued that the biggest win of the evening was in the category ofB est Original Score. Only twelve women have received nominations in this category over the years. When Hildur Guðnadóttir won the Oscar for her musical score for Joker, she became the fourth woman to win in this category. It should be noted that a woman conducted the orchestra, the first time in the history of the Oscar ceremonies, to present the musical scores for these Oscar nominees.

IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

This year’s Semifinalists and Finalists were chosen from a field of 9,487 scripts entered in our Screenplay, Digital Series, Playwriting, and Fiction Podcast Competitions. Each year we are amazed by the professional quality and talent that we receive and this year wasn’t any different. The Competition is open to feature-length scripts in the genres of drama, comedy, sci-fi, and horror; teleplay pilots and specs, short scripts, stage plays, fiction podcast scripts, and digital series scripts. Year after year, our strive in programming the Austin Film Festival film slate is to discover and champion the writers and those who can translate amazing stories to the screen. We received over 5,000 film submissions this year and had the task of whittling it down to 182 films that embody our mission and passion for storytelling. It was a harrowing task, but it led to our strongest year of film yet. We’re so proud of this year’s diverse group of filmmakers and unique voices and can’t wait for these works to be seen, shared, and loved.
