2017 Annual Report
ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Horizons Foundation envisions a world where all people live free from prejudice and discrimination, and where LGBTQ people contribute to and thrive in a vibrant, diverse, giving, and compassionate community. VISION A community foundation rooted in and dedicated to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, we exist to: • Mobilize and increase resources for the LGBTQ movement and organizations that secure the rights, meet the needs, and celebrate the lives of LGBTQ people • Empower individual donors and promote giving as an integral part of a healthy, compassionate community MISSION • Steward a permanently endowed fund through which donors can make legacy gifts to ensure our community’s capacity to meet the needs of LGBTQ people, now and forever. 2017will not easily be forgotten. Even as the LGBTQ movement notched at least a handful of victories, 2017 also brought a painful and sudden reminder that we cannot take our rights for granted. Our progress remains, in too many ways, fragile. At the same time, 2017 reminded us of the generosity of our Horizons family. Thanks to the support of donors like you, Horizons grew significantly, ending the year with assets nearing $35 million. That success enabled us to award more than $2.5 million in grants to a wide array of nonprofits that advocate for and serve our community day in and day out. Simultaneously, donor commitments to making legacy gifts to the foundation also rose, reaching more than $65 million in future gifts that will benefit LGBTQ people for decades and decades ahead. Perhaps in a different era, these achievements might fill our Annual Report, along with a few profiles about our grantees and the lives they touch. -

OPEN LETTER ABOUT CORONAVIRUS AND THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES Over 100 Organizations Ask Media & Health Officials to Weigh Added Risk New York, NY - Over 100 national and local organizations have signed on to an open letter to health and media outlining how COVID-19 may pose an increased risk to the LGBTQ+ population and laying out specific steps to minimize any disparity. “As the media and health communities are pushed into overdrive about COVID-19, we need to make sure the most vulnerable among us are not forgotten. Our smoking rates alone make us extremely vulnerable and our access to care barriers only make a bad situation worse.” notes Dr. Scout, the Deputy Director for the National LGBT Cancer Network, “This letter outlines simple steps to ensure no population is further stigmatized by a virus.” “As an organization dedicated to the health and well-being of LGBTQ communities, we urge LGBTQ individuals to practice measures recommended by public health experts, such as frequent handwashing, to prevent the spread of this virus,” said GLMA President Scott Nass, MD, MPA. “At the same time, like our colleagues who joined the open letter, we call on public health officials to ensure the LGBTQ community is considered and included in the public health response to COVID-19 based on potential risk factors that exist in our community.” The letter was initiated by a coalition of six organizations: the National LGBT Cancer Network; GLMA Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality; Whitman-Walker Health; SAGE; New York Transgender Advocacy Group; and National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance. -

LGBTQ Organizations Unite to Combat Racial Violence “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” Those words, written over 30 years ago by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, remind us that indifference can never bridge the divide of hate. And, today, they should serve as a call to action to all of us, and to the Movement for LGBTQ equality. This spring has been a stark and stinging reminder that racism, and its strategic objective, white supremacy, is as defining a characteristic of the American experience as those ideals upon which we claim to hold our democracy — justice, equality, liberty. • We listened to the haunting pleas of George Floyd for the most basic of human needs — simply, breath — as a Minneapolis police officer kneeled with cruel indifference on his neck. • We felt the pain of Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend as he called 9-1-1 after plainclothes Louisville police kicked down the door of their home and shot her eight times as she slept in her bed. • We watched the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery by white vigilantes in Brunswick, GA, aware that they evaded the consequence of their actions until the video surfaced and sparked national outrage. • We saw the weaponizing of race by a white woman who pantomimed fear in calling the police on Christian Cooper, a Black gay man bird-watching in Central Park. • We have heard and read about the killings of transgender people -- Black transgender women in particular — with such regularity, it is no exaggeration to describe it as a epidemic of violence. -

October 6, 2020 OPPOSE THE CONFIRMATION OF AMY CONEY BARRETT TO THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES Dear Senator: On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights – the nation’s oldest, largest, and most diverse civil and human rights coalition – and the 169 undersigned organizations, we write to express our strong opposition to the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a fearless champion of justice and the conscience of the Court. She was a pioneer for gender equality as a civil rights lawyer and jurist, and she left an indelible mark on our nation’s jurisprudence through her embodiment of the words etched on the building in which she served – equal justice under law. It is an insult to her legacy that President Trump is attempting to replace her with someone who will try to restrict civil and human rights in America. Judge Barrett’s extreme record on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, along with her ideologically driven writings and speeches, demonstrate that she is incapable of rendering equal justice under law. Her hostility to Roe v. Wade and to Supreme Court cases upholding the Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) will likely make her a decisive vote on the Court to reverse those landmark rulings, which would deprive millions of people access to essential health care services and abortion access. Her record also demonstrates a dangerous lack of deference to long-standing precedent. One legal commentator -

Dear Center Family, There aren't enough words to express the grief, sorrow, pain, and anger we are experiencing as a community. One of our core values as an organization is approaching our work intersectionally. This means we must always meaningfully address how racism impacts our staff, volunteers, clients, and community. We can and must do better as individuals and as a community. Along with more than 100 LGBTQ organizations, The Center has signed on to a joint letter reaffirming our commitment to action in the face of pervasive and systemic racism that continues to impact our country and our communities.
