ROSTHERNE is a parish, comprising part of the townships of AGDFJN and Bor.LINGTON, the townships of HmH-LEIGH, -CUM-LITTLE W ARFORD, MERE, MILLING TON, , RoSTHERNE, , and TATTON, in Altrincham union and SNELSON in union, containing altogether, by the census of 1861, 4:058. and in 1871, 4073 inhabitants, and 19,096 acres ; in the hundred of Bucklow, Mid . ROSTHERNE is a township of the above parish, in Altrincham polling district and union, containing, by the census of 1861, 393, and in 1871, 391 inhabitants, and 1512 acres; 3 miles north from Knutsford, 3! south-west from Bowdon Station on the Man­ and Altrincham line of railway, 4 south-west from Altrincham, 9 north-east from , and 12 south-west from Manchester; in the hundred of Bucklow, deanery of , archdeaconry and diocese of Chester, Mid Cheshire, pleasantly situated on the banks of a mere or lake 1253 yards long, and 695 yards wide, the extreme depth being 34J yards, and containing 115 statute acres. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Foster Clarke, M.A., is valued at £300 per annum, with residence, and is in the patronage of Lord Egerton. During the Commonwealth, Adam Martindale, the then vicar, was ejected from this living, for refusing to comply with the Act of Uniformity of 1661. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient edifice, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, side chapels and tower, containing 6 bells, with a set of chimes and a clock. There are schools for children of both sexes, to one of which is at­ tached a lending library for the use of the parishioners. The poor have charitable bequests producing about £7 10s. per annum. Lord Egerton is lord of the manor. RosTHERNE MANOR, the seat of the Hon. Wilbraham Egerton, M.P., is a substantial modern mansion, situate on an eminence commanding some beautiful Yiews of the sur­ rounding country. AGDEN is a township, partly in Rostherne and partly in Bowdon parishes, in polling district, Altrincham union, containing, by the census of 1861, in Bowdon 38, and Rostherne 60, making a total of 98 ; and in 1871, in Bowdon 34, and in Rostherne 75, making a total of 109 inhabitants, and 520 acres; in the hundred of Bucklow, Mid Cheshire; 4 miles south-west from Altrincham, near the Bridgewater Canal, which runs through the township.
