PawPrints Magazine's Homeless cover Model Are you the missing puzzle piece that will complete my adoption story? My name is Pepper and my story begins when I was found abandoned in a ditch in Hampstead. I was taken to the vet’s office, where it was by Dick ParrottPhoto discovered that I am mostly blind. However, I do see shadows and I walk around just fine. I tilt my head in order to see better and to sense what’s around me. (You can watch me play fetch in a video on the shelter’s Facebook page, www.Facebook.com/ PenderCountyHumaneSociety). I am a very sweet boy who absolutely loves all people. I do well with other (girls especially), as long as we are introduced slowly. In fact, I would probably benefit from another in the home to act as my ’seeing eye dog’. I am 3-years-old and I weigh 40 pounds. Please call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022 if you are interested in adopting me and completing the puzzle! Big thanks to Dick Parrott for my cover photo. Hello! I am Dixie, a 9-year old Johnsons Corner female Staf- fordshire Bull Grill and Convenience Store

I’m a beautiful girl who would like nothing more than to find a home of my very own. I am very people affectionate: one of my favorite pastimes is to sit in your lap to get brushed; another is doggie massages; and my most favorite is giving lots of kisses! I recently attended school for a week at Canine Academy and passed with flying colors! I listen to commands, walk well on a leash and enjoy being with other dogs. A fenced in yard would be perfect for me, and so would a young or middle-aged single person or family with no or small 910-259-4367 children. A comfy sofa is also a requirement! Even though I love to chase a ball, I do enjoy my cuddle-time on the 9031 US Hwy 421, Currie, NC couch. If you’d like to meet me, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. You’ll see I’m simply wonderful! Open 7 days week!

I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of Monday - Saturday 4:30am to 8pm all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely Sunday 6:30am to 8pm to the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm a fantastic cuddler and love being with people. I’ll be an incredible best friend, especially for someone who is home a lot. I probably wouldn't do as well with kids because I'm startled by lots of activity and tend to be nervous when it gets loud. I can be a tad shy when I first meet someone but I warm up quickly with a little attention and maybe a few treats. I'd love to have someone who wants to spoil me and I would spoil them with all of my love and attention in return. I do need a little medication for a heart murmur. It's called Enalapril but it doesn't cost very much - only about 60 cents a day. Due to a sudden glaucoma, I also had to have one of my eyes removed recently but that doesn't slow me down at all and I'm just as loving and sweet as I ever was. At the farm, I am house-trained and if someone were to keep me on a simi- lar schedule, I'd do great with that in a new home as well. I hope someone will give me a chance! Hello, I'm Roscoe and I'm the sweetest little man you can meet! I'm roughly 18 pounds and always happy. I try to give kisses but prefer to squeak my toys and play ball. I'm always on the go from one thing to an- other, and I’m VERY curious. I play for a bit, then I investigate the bedroom, then I find a toy, then I kiss my foster mom, then I go outside (I love the doggie door!), and then I come back in to watch some TV. I'm learning my house-training so I wear a belly band when inside and thus I don't make mistakes. I am almost there! I sleep perfect in a crate and am there while my foster mom works. I love all treats, food, and peanut butter filled Kongs. I can entertain myself, but also love to cuddle with my human for a bit. I just had a dental and was neutered, so I'm as healthy as I can be! My vet said I'm around 8 to 9-years-old so I've tons of spunk left for the second half of this life! The shelter “Peanut” team decided to send her to live in a foster home while we Submitted by: Eva Creighton waited for the court date. Even though we already had three dogs and did not want another one (especially a puppy), we took her in. We knew she needed us. We pushed our fears of heartbreak and becoming too attached aside. The shelter won the court case and it was time to find Peanut a new home. We posted her picture on Facebook along with her story and brought her to the shelter on a sunny Saturday in December to interview furever families. No one came to meet her that day. Peanut and I returned home and my husband and youngest dog had missed her so much that day, thinking she would not be coming back, that we decided to adopt her. June 2016 www.facebook.com/PawPrintsMagazine 21 HELP!!! It's Kitten Season!

Each year too many unwanted kittens are born outside in the rain and cruelty of their surroundings, and each year Friends of Felines (FOF) volunteers and caregivers are out in force trying to prevent these unwanted births through a managed trap/neuter/vaccinate and return program. For years, FOF has teamed up with local adoption groups to try to get these young feral kittens out of colonies and into foster care, but there are just not enough homes for everyone.

Please support us on our mission to reduce unwanted births so no kitten has to survive outside, dodging cars and wondering where its next meal is coming from.

Could I be part of your family?

Looking for a forever home can be tough when you’re a Pit. Being a girl who is picky about her canine company, can make it even harder. My name is Gypsy (31217718) and I’m 3-years-old. There just has to be someone out there for me. My tail is always wagging and I’m always ready to play. I’m a great snuggler and love a good belly rub. I’m an ac- tive girl who would do best in a home with a fenced yard and an adventuresome family. I love to run, play with my tennis ball, and would be a fine companion for anyone who likes to be on the move. I know how to sit on command, I’m already spayed, and I’m eager to please my human. I will make someone very happy. If you are interested in giving me the love I so deserve, contact Onslow County Animal Services or stop by the shelter located at 244 Georgetown Road in Jacksonville. For more info, call 910-937-1164.

June 2016 www.facebook.com/PawPrintsMagazine 31 URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! I’m a very sweet girl named Iris (A013274) and, I must say, you’ve just got to come see me in per- son. With one ice-blue eye and a white coat of fur, I’m gorgeous! At just 3-years-old, I arrived at the shelter with a litter of puppies. My owner said that he could no longer protect me from bad guys in the neighborhood who were trying to steal my children. I had even been hit in the head by someone trying to steal my pups, which is crazy because I am SO friendly and I don’t mind you touching my babies at all. Anyway, my pups are weaned and I am ready to find my new family. If ever a girl had a “Calgon, take me away” moment, this is it, because although I’ve escaped one dangerous situation, I’m now facing another sad situation due to this very crowded shelter. Dogs arrive every day and there’s just not enough room for us all. Won’t you please visit so you can see what a wonderful girl I am? The shelter is open 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, Noon to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays. For driving direc- tions or more info, call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484 or email [email protected].

I do pretty well on a leash and even know basic commands like sit and shake. I do not like cats or chickens. I’m a submissive guy and not very good with male dogs who are my size. But I do like to play with my foster sibling who is a Boston Terrier. I would do well in a home with no other dogs or maybe a smaller female dog. June 2016 www.facebook.com/PawPrintsMagazine 43 Hi, I’m Luke! I am a 15-month-old Pointer and Hound mix. I am very smart and have been working with a trainer to learn “sit”, “here” and “off”. I was adopted by a well-meaning person, but their environment is not the greatest for a Hound dog. There are cats and horses and chickens and I want to chase all of them! I have to be on a tie out and that is not good. I am very good on it though. I have also learned “quiet” and I am mostly house-trained. I live in a stall at night and rarely make a mistake in there. I wait till morning for a walk and potty. I am neutered and up to date on shots. I was heartworm negative when adopted but I have not had any prevention since then so I will need a heart- worm test. Please help me find a home with an escape- proof fenced yard (I do dig), someone to train me and run and play with me, and maybe even another dog to play with. I get along great with other dogs but not cats, chick- ens or other small animals. I love people! I also come with one free group class with Salty Dogs Training at Paw Beach! Training coupon must be used within 2-months of my adoption! What a great deal! To learn more about me or to meet me, please email [email protected] or call 224-280-5517 or 847-594-7529.

I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.

Good golly, I am one happy dog. I’m Sally! I am a Shepherd mix and not quite a year old. I may seem quite active at first but it is only because I just want to play! Let me tell you, I am one “Social Sally”. I am very sweet and just want some TLC from, well, everybody, but I am really looking for a family to take me in and show me what it’s like to live in a home. I have not mastered the leash yet but I am making some real improvements. I just can’t help it, the leash looks like a long rope toy! I really believe that I would settle down in my forever home. I need a family that will be patient and work with me to help me with my manners. What do you say? Do you have it in your heart to help me? Call Paws Place at 910-845-7297 and tell them you’re headed over to meet me!

I am sponsored in loving memory of Grace Harrington. Breed Rescues
