54th State Leadership Conference 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the 54th annual Pennsylvania FBLA State Leadership Conference.

This end-of-year event is considered by many to be the highlight of the FBLA school year. You are all very lucky to be among a select group who has earned the privilege to represent your school and your region. Through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, you are now eligible to compete for the chance to represent Pennsylvania and this tremendous organization at the national level this summer in Orlando, Florida.

Good luck to everyone competing in the vast number of events offered this year at the SLC. Also, best of luck to those of you who are running for a state offi ce. The state offi cer experience is one you will never forget. Although it is hard work, the rewards from the experience and the people whose paths you cross will forever have a permanent impact on your future.

I want to thank you, the members of PA FBLA, for giving me the opportunity to serve as your state president. I have made many new friends and learned many new lessons. I have enjoyed working with all of you on “our road to success.”

Although success in competitive events is an important part of PA, I have learned there is so much more out there for ALL members of FBLA. Please be sure to attend the numerous workshops, participate in open competitive events, and visit the many exhibits during the SLC. Also, please stop by the campaign booths to meet our potential state offi cers.

On behalf of this year’s state offi cer team, I would like to express our gratitude for your dedication to PA FBLA. I hope that this conference serves as a positive experience for all of you as we cross the fi nish line together.

Sincerely,

Raul Patel PA FBLA State President

54th State Leadership Conference 9 OPEN COMPETITIVE EVENTS PROGRAM

Pennsylvania FBLA is proud to offer “Open Competitive Events” to all members attending the State Conference. The guidelines are: 1. There will be ten “open” competitive events offered at the 2005 State Leadership Conference. They are: • Computer Hardware, Software, and Operating Systems In this event, students will be tested on basic hardware, software, and operating system concepts related to both PC and Macintosh computers. • Current Events In this event, students will be tested on current news events since Labor Day, September 2004. • FBLA Creed/Code of Ethics In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of the FBLA Creed and Code of Ethics as found in the PA FBLA Policy/Leadership Handbook. • Insurance In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of insurance related concepts. • Investments In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of investments and related concepts. • Management In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of managerial related concepts. • Pennsylvania Policies, Procedures, and More In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of Pennsylvania FBLA based on content found in the PA FBLA Policy/Leadership Handbook, the PA FBLA Student Handbook, and the PA FBLA website. • Sales/Advertising In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of sales/advertising related concepts. • The Internet In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of basic Internet related concepts. • The Workplace In this event, students will be tested on their knowledge of the workplace and related concepts. 2. Any student already qualifi ed to attend the 2005 State Leadership Conference may take these tests—even if he or she has already participated in these events. Chap- ters may not bring additional members to compete in these events. 3. There is no pre-registration for these events. They are offered on a fi rst-come, fi rst- serve basis. 10 PA FBLA – The Road to Your Success 10 PA FBLA – The Road to Your Success OPEN COMPETITIVE EVENTS PROGRAM

4. These events will be offered between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. All will be administered in the same room. 5. Students may take as many of these tests in this 2 1⁄2 hour period as they wish. All tests are machine graded multiple choice or true/false type tests. Students must bring their own #2 pencil. All tests are 50 or fewer questions. Students may have as much or as little time as necessary to complete any one test. 6. Certifi cates will be awarded to the Top 10 students in each event and their names will be fl ashed across the screen. The fi rst place winner in each event will be recog- nized on stage. Certifi cates will be mailed after the conference. These events do not qualify a student to attend the National Leadership Conference. 7. In the event of a tie, the fi rst tiebreaker will be the same tiebreaker procedure as is used in other written objective tests and found in the PA FBLA Policy/Leadership Handbook. In the event the tie cannot be broken with the fi rst tiebreaker, the tie will be broken by lottery as the second tiebreaker. Time is not a factor and will not be considered in breaking a tie. 8. There are no formal written guidelines for these events. The content of each event is listed above. 9. The contestants are required to comply with all dress code and name badge requirements. 10. The testing procedure shall be: a. At 12:00 p.m., the test administrators will open the door to the testing room (Festival Hall), which is capable of seating approximately 300 students. A line will form outside Festival Hall. b. The test administrator will permit the fi rst 300 students to enter the room and be seated. Once all seats are fi lled, the doors will be closed. Tests will be distributed to those seated (students may request any one of the ten different tests). c. The initial group of students will begin taking the test at the test administrator’s direction. d. As a student fi nishes a test, he or she will turn in the test to the test administrators and will then be required to leave the room. e. Once one student leaves a room, the test administrators will permit another student to enter the room and request a particular test. f. The process will continue for the 2 1⁄2 hour period of time. g. If a student wishes to take another test, he or she must leave the room and go to the back of the line to await entry. Students may take as many different tests in the 2 1⁄2 hour period as they can schedule, but they must leave the room each time and go to the back of the line. h. All testing will be stopped and papers collected promptly at 2:30 p.m., regardless of how much or how little time a student has had to work on the test he/she has in his/her possession.
