A Word From the Fr. Alex KISSING THE The most frequent and most unmistakable sign of love is the kiss. Kissing the Altar has a greater significance in the Liturgy. In the Roman Stational services in 7thcentury, after the ‘’ and the prostration, the Pope, after a mo- ment, rises, kisses the book and the Altar. Meanwhile, during the interval of silent prayer, the have come up to the sides of the Altar two-by-two and kissed it. In the same liturgy, after the , the Pontiff leaves his place and kisses the Altar and then himself receives the of the assisting clerics. Jungmann, when explaining the historical development of the gesture of kissing the Altar, says: The Gothic principle of cumulation, the heaping up of ornament, had its effect on the kissing of the Altar. Although up to the twelfth century, this was customary, in line with tradition, only when first approaching the Altar and again when leaving, since the end of the thirteenth century it was performed every time the celebrant turned around at the Altar. The kiss at high Mass when handing the celebrant any object, and the kiss of greeting for the celebrant are also added at various places. No less than eight times in the , the officiating bends low to kiss the Altar (Osculatur Al- tare). However, in the revised Ordo after Vatican II, we see the priest kisses the Altar only two times. When the priest ap- proaches the Altar for the Eucharistic celebration and when he leaves the Altar after the mass, kisses the Altar accompanied with a deep bow as a sign of veneration: Cum ad presbyterium pervenerint, sacerdos, diaconus, et ministri Altare salutant profunda inclina- tione. The book of ceremonies says that the ceremonial kiss is a very ancient sign of respect and reverence and the Altar is kissed because it represents Christ. In the General Instruction, there is also a special instruction about the veneration of the Altar and the book of the Gospels. De veneratione Altaris et Evangeliarii number 273, “Iuxta morem traditum, venera- tio Altaris et Evangeliarii osculo perficitur…”. The book of the Ceremonial of , number 73 also says about this sign of veneration of kissing the Altar. In Ordo Dedicationis Ecclesiae et Altaris, number 35 we see, “Episcopus, omisso Altaris osculo, pergit ad cathe- dram”. The omission of the gesture of kissing the Altar, which is completely stripped, is understandable since this sign of veneration is given only after the Altar has been anointed with chrism. The kiss of the Altar with which every Eucharistic celebration begins had been deferred because the Altar was not ready. And after the consecration, now the Altar, having become the sign of the Anointed One and decorated as a joyous Easter table, is ready to receive the ritual gesture of venera- tion with which every begins and ends. The Eastern Father Narsai of Nisibus (ca. 399-503), write in his ‘’ about the Eucharistic sacrifice, in which he describes the veneration of Altar by the : The priest stands to officiate, doing so with reverence, great awe, and trembling. Like Jacob, he wor- ships three times and three; then he draws near to kiss our Lord's tomb, that is, Altar. Bradley sees it is a brotherly greetings. Taking the idea of St. Paul in 1Thes 5, 26: ‘Greet one another with a holy kiss’, he says that the concept of the Altar as Christ’s body is expressed by the priest's kissing it, particularly as an act of brotherly greeting at the beginning of Mass. Behen gives a different understanding from the idea of Bradley. He says that although the kiss seems to be a sign of veneration for the relics enclosed in the Altar, we see a deeper significance in the gesture than that. The frequent repetition of the act reminds us of the bridal relation between Christ that is the Altar and His Church that is the priest, the representative of the Church. Especially significant is the immediately pre- ceding the sacrificial banquet. The kiss, symbolizing the Christian love of the assembled faithful, proceeds from the Altar. The celebrant first kisses the Altar which is Christ and then kisses his brethren. Bradley sees it as a brotherly greetings while Behen sees the same as the bridal kiss of the Church through the priest to the groom Jesus symbolized in the Altar. The Kiss involves the senses of touch, taste, and smell. So it’s an expression of close relationship. The kiss communicates affection and it also involves the sharing. In explaining the kiss of peace, L. E. Philips says that Kiss could also function as a communication of Spiritual power and or other qualities contained with- in Pneuma. The giving of Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John 20:22, is interpreted very much like a kiss. So, this kiss of a priest can also be thought in this view point. After receiving the Spiritual power from Jesus, the Altar, the priest exercises his priestly ministry at the Altar.
