Roger Hughes

The Charles W. Caldwell Jr. ’25 Head Coach of Princeton Football • Seventh Season • Doane ’82

Roger Hughes, the Charles W. Caldwell Jr. ’25 Head Coach of Football at , has put together one of the great two-year stretches in the last 50 years of Princeton football, capping it with a season for the ages. An Eddie Robinson Award finalist for Division I-AA Coach of the Year in 2006, Hughes led a Princeton squad that was picked to finish sixth in the preseason media poll to a 9-1 record and the 2006 Ivy League title. The nine wins was the most at Princeton since 1964 and the league title was the first for the Orange and Black in more than a decade. Hughes, who has improved Princeton’s winning percentage in six of the last seven seasons and is the only coach in the history of Ivy League football to improve a team by at least two wins in three straight seasons, guided Princeton to the 2006 title despite starting an entirely new offensive line and linebacking corps. His offense finished first in the Ivies in both passing yards and total yards, and his senior quarterback, Jeff Terrell, became Princeton’s first Bushnell Cup winner (Ivy. League Player of the Year) since 1995. Terrell is only the second Prince-ton quarterback to win the award; the other is longtime NFL quarterback and current offensive coordinator . Princeton rallied to win five games it trailed in the second half, four games it trailed in the fourth quarter and two games it trailed in the final five minutes. The highlight win of the season was a 34-31 win at Yale, when Princeton rallied from a trio of 14-point deficits and threw for 446 yards in a thriller. That win clinched Princeton’s first bonfire in 12 years, a tradition for any team that sweeps Harvard and Yale in the same season. That championship run followed a brilliant 2005 season, when the Tigers earned their first seven-win campaign since 1995. Outside of the 2003 season, when four starters, three of whom were All-Ivy picks and eventually invited to NFL mini-camps, were lost for the season, Princeton has won 29 of its last 42 games. Under Hughes, 24 Tigers have earned first-team All-Ivy honors, and several others have been named to either the second team or earned honorable mention. His highest number came in 2005, when 10 Princeton players earned All-Ivy honors. He also had a pair of All-Americas in Jay McCareins, a Buck Buchanan finalist for Defensive Player of the Year, and Colin McDonough. 2007 Starting Lineups Opponent WR LT LG C RG RT TE WR QB TB FB Lehigh Berry Swisher Daou Morgan Makrai Paski Staser Circle Foran Lagomarsino Toresco Lafayette Columbia Hampton Brown Harvard Cornell Penn Yale Dartmouth

Lehigh 32, Princeton 21

PRINCETON, N.J. - Prior to Saturday night’s season opener, Princeton head coach Roger Hughes said that his team would need to be fundamen- tally sound to have a chance against a talented Lehigh squad. He said that turnovers and special teams could both play major roles in the outcome. Un- fortunately, he was right. Five Princeton first-half turnovers, a blocked punt for a safety and miserable field position plagued the Tigers in a 32-21 loss to Lehigh on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium. “Lehigh did a good job, and I’m not taking anything away from them,” Hughes said, “but you can’t come out and turn the ball over five times in the first half. I told the guys to look around the locker room, because we aren’t picking anybody up on the waiver wire. We need to improve, and we’re going to work this week to get it done.” The Tigers were outgained by only three total yards, but turnovers did them in. Senior quarterback Bill Foran, making his first start at the position, completed 7-of-23 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns, but he had two interceptions as well. Junior R.C. Lagomarsino fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, and two more special teams fumbles kept the Princeton offense off the field. The Princeton defense, led by a strong 17-tackle effort from Tim Board- man, held Lehigh out as long as possible, but the field position was too much to overcome. Lehigh’s average field position was the Princeton 48- yard-line, and it had more than 39 minutes time of possession. Doori Song and Joe Cerreta both had At Princeton Stadium • Sept. 15, 2006 eight tackles apiece, and Lehigh (1-1) 13 10 2 7 - 32 Cerreta added his first Princeton (1-0) 0 0 14 7 - 21 career interception.
