Participating Artists

David Derrico is a senior at Buccholz High School and has studied violin and viola with Sonnhild Kitts for 14 years. He also studies with Paul Fleury and Kenneth Martinson. David has been active as soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. He has been a member of Alachua County Youth Orchestra since 2000 and principal violist for the 2006-2007 season. He has been a Florida All State Orchestra member since 2002 and was principal violist in 2007. David wos senior Viola Concerto winner at the 2003 Florida Federation of Music Clubs (FFMC) State Convention and featured soloist in 2004. In 2006 he was named outstanding violist at the FFMC State Convention and was featured soloist with The Bartok Viola Concerto in May 2007. David is also an accomplished violinist and 'was Advanced violin solo winner in 2006 and featured violin soloist with the Wieniawski violin concerto at the FFMC State Convention in May 2007.

David was the 2006 Florida State Music Teacher Association (FSMTA) Suwannee District Senior Strings winner and runner-up at the State level. In 2007 he was the FSMTA District and State Senior Strings winner and in October he will be a featured soloist with orchestra at the FSMTA annual convention in Boca Raton, Florida. David was the senior strings winner for the 2007 Betsy Schnell Youth Award and the 2007 Alma Fennel Strings Scholarship Award. David will continue his musical studies this fall in Viola performance at The Manhattan School of Music in in the studio of Karen Dreyfus.

Alan Clark is sixteen years old and finishing up his sophomore year in the 18 program at Eastside High School in Gainesville. He began taking piano lessons at the age of four and is currently a student of Dr. Hee Jung Kong.

Alan has won a number of piano solo and concerto competitions at both the district and state levels. Lost year Alan won the FSMTA Piano Concerto Contest in the Intermediate Division and this post Fall he won the M TNA Piano Performance competition for the state of Florida in the Senior Division. At the age of twelve Alan won the David Hubbell concerto competition and played with the Alachua County Youth Orchestra at their 2004 spring concert. Lost year Alan won the Young Artists Concerto Competition (in the 14-18 age division) and played twice with the Central Florida Symphony Orchestra at their season finale concert. Alan has also won a number of events in the Florida Federation of FAU Symphony, October 19, 2007

Music Clubs (FFMC) annual state competition including Senior Piano Concerto and Musically Advanced II Solo.

Alan loves improvising and composing. For six years in a row he won the FFMC Junior Composers Contest and in 2005 Alcns composition was the National winner in his age division.

Alan also plays the obo~ with the Alachua County Youth Orchestra and is a student of Dr. Leslie Odom.

Dr. Laura Joella, a second generation conductor, is the Director of Orchestral Studies and on Assistant Professor of Music at Florida Atlantic University. She has been the Music Director/Conductor of FAU's Symphony Orchestra since May of 2005. Dr. Joella is also the Music Director/Conductor of New England Music Camp's Concert Orchestra in Sidney, Moine. Dr. Joella's previous posts include Music Director/Conductor of the Mason Orchestral Society in Mason, Michigan including both the Community Orchestra and the Youth Symphony; Conductor for the Michigan State University Concert Orchestra; and Assistant Instructor of Strings at Michigan State University School of Music in East lansing, Michigan.

Dr. Joella received both her Doctor of Musical Arts and Moster of Music degrees in Orchestral Conducting from Michigan State University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance with a dual concentration in Double Boss and Saxophone, as well as her Bachelor of Science in Music Education from lebanon Volley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. She was a participating conductor at the Naples Philharmonic Conductor's Institute. She studied and conducted at the Conductor's Institute at Spoleto USA, and the Conductor's Institute of South Carolina. She spent a summer at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestral Musicians. Dr. Joella has had considerable experience conducting in secondary schools in Florida, Michigan, California, and Pennsylvania. As a guest conductor, she has appeared with the Wind Symphony of Florida; the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 8 Orchestra Festival; the Portland Orchestral Society in Michigan; the Michigan State University Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras; and the lake Orion School District Orchestra Festival in Michigan. Dr. Joella has studied conducting with Professor leon Gregorian and Dr. Raphael Jimenez at Michigan State University; with Jorge Mester at the Naples Philharmonic Conductor's Institute; with Donald Portnoy, Paul Vermel, Kate Tamarkin, Peter Jaffe, and Samuel Jones at the Conductor's Institute of South Carolina; privately with Andrew Robinson; and in a master closs with Kevin Rhodes. Participating Artists

Canadian pianist Edward Turgeon earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from his home town University of Toronto in 1989, along with the coveted Forsyth Memorial Scholarship for top graduating pianist. That same yeor, he began a three year appointment as keyboard faculty member and chair of the music department at Algoma University College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Graduate studies brought Turgeon to the , where he has liv:ed since 1991, earning Master of Music (1993), Master of Musical Arts (l994) and Doctor of Musical Arts (2000) degrees in piano performance from Yale University, as well as the Philip Nelson and Catherine Winchell Memorial Scholarships. Turgeon was awarded Yale's special prize for best chamber music ensemble. Summer studies included a chamber music fellowship at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, master classes at the Holland Music Sessions, intensive chamber music studies with members of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra at the Jeunesses Musicales International Chamber Music Festival and Workshop in Weikersheim, Germany, and piano master classes at the renowned Banff Centre for Music and Sound. His teachers included James Anagnoson, Peter Frankl, Claude Frank, Marek Jablonski, Karl Ulrich Schnabel and Peter Serkin.

As a chamber musician, Turgeon has performed and/or toured with noted musicians of our time including Sidney Harth, James Campbell, CheeYun, David Jolley, Ivan Chan, Keith Robinson, Michael Rusinek, Michael Webster, Ransom Wilson and laura Gilbert. As a member of the piano duo "Duo Turgeon" with his wife Anne louise-Turgeon, Edward has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, and many well-known chamber music festivals. The duo has taken first prize and numerous additional special prizes at major international competitions for piano duos, including the Murray Dranoff (Miami) and Schubert International (Czech Republic). Their recordings on the Vanguard Classics, Marquis Classics, and Marquis/EMI labels have been hailed by numerous critics and included among several classical top ten lists. Turgeon's recordings have consistently received the highest possible ratings from classical music periodicals and CD rating guides such as la Scena Musicale, les Grandes Pianistes et Ie Piano, Wholenote Magazine, Musicweb, Soundstage, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's "Sound Advice." He has given world premiere performances of works by Alex Pauk, and John Corigliano. The noted French music critic Stephan Villemin recently named the Duo Turgeon as among of the top four piano duos of our time.

Turgeon's performances have been heard in radio broadcasts worldwide, including several appearances on National Public Radio's "Performance Today." He is a featured pianist in the NPR television documentary "Two Pianos - One Passion," Duo Turgeon, October 20, 2007

Turgeon's upcoming recording projects include works for two pianos by Johannes Brahms, works for two pianos by Spanish composers, and a two-CD set of works for two pianos, and one piano four-hand duet by Max Reger.

Turgeon appears frequently as a competition judge, most recently at the Murray DrenoH International Two Piano Competition, and the notional finals of the Canadian Music Competition.

Turgeon is currently a member of the keyboard faculty, ensemble-in-residence member, and coordinator of chamber music and accompanying at Florida Atlantic University's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and letters, School of the Arts, in Boca Raton, Florida. He is also a senior member of the Royal Conservatory of Music's College of Examiners.

As a soloist, louise-Turgeon has taken prizes in the Cleveland and Sydney International Piano Competitions, as well as a Government of Canada Award for Achievement in the Arts and on Ontario Arts Council Chalmers Award for advanced solo studies. Participating Artists music of Ezra Lederman. With her husband Edward, louise-Turgeon maintains an active performing and recording career as a member of the "Duo Turgeon", including appearances at the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, two performances at Carnegie Hall's "Weill Recital Hall," and numerous appearances in classical music series, festivals and special celebrations. They have given the world premiere of new works for two pianos by composers such as Aaron Copland, John Corigliano and Alex Pauk. louise-Turgeon's radio and television appearances have included ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), eBC Radio I, II and Arts Notional, and NPR's "Performance Today", live interviewjperformonces on WGBH Boston and the PBS television documentary "Two Pianos - One Passion."
