ArtyParade.com Pablo Picasso, Femme agenouillée se coiffant, 1906 ou les techniques de bronzes d’art Par Vérane Tasseau (la 1ère version de cet article a été publié dans le magazine Ojo n°13 de janvier 2011 disponible en ligne www.picasso.fr (http://www.picasso.fr)) Si les qualités techniques ou le nombre d’exemplaire des sculptures en bronze réalisées par Picasso au début du XXe siècle restent méconnues, Femme agenouillée se coiffant fait figure d’exception, l’œuvre étant relativement bien documentée. Picasso a réalisé la céramique originale de Femme agenouillée, aussi appelée La Coiffure à Paris, au retour de Gosol, pendant l’été - automne 1906, dans l’atelier du sculpteur Paco Durrio. Collection particulière © succession Picasso 2011 Le marchand Ambroise Vollard qui s’intéressait aux œuvres de Picasso dès 1901, commença à éditer des pièces en bronze dont Femme agenouillée se coiffant à partir de 1910. Selon des informations fournies par la fonderie Valsuani, il fit tirer à cette époque cinq exemplaires, signés mais non numérotés, par Claude Valsuani. Vollard qui ne faisait pas de contrat avec ses artistes, avait cependant l’autorisation de Picasso pour reproduire l’œuvre à plusieurs exemplaires. En effet, à partir de 1910, la loi stipulait que l’artiste conservait ses droits de reproduction avec l’œuvre vendue. Le marchand éditait des exemplaires au cas par cas pour des clients potentiels, ainsi qu’un bronze supplémentaire revenant à Picasso. Ce dernier faisait partie de la succession Picasso à sa mort en 1973. Trois des cinq bronzes édités par Vollard se trouvent aujourd’hui dans des musées : au Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden de Washington page 1 / 6 ArtyParade.com Pablo Picasso, Femme agenouillée se coiffant, 1906, bronze. Le cinquième exemplaire a fait partie de la succession Vollard puis d’une collection privée avant de réapparaitre en vente publique chez Christie’s, New York, le 9 novembre 2006. Sur un plan technique, les exemplaires qui ont pu être examinés n’ont pas de dos, mais une fine bande en bronze, à la base, qui rejoint les deux cotés. La céramique originale n’a en effet pas de dos visible puisqu’elle semble attachée à un support qui enclave l’arrière de la figure Pablo Picasso, Femme agenouillée se coiffant, 1906, bronze, vue de dos. Collection particulière © succession Picasso 2011 page 2 / 6 ArtyParade.com La céramique appartenait encore à Picasso dans les années 40 qui l’a ensuite donné à Raoul Pellequer, collectionneur et frère de Max Pellequer, ami et banquier de l’artiste. En 1968, Raoul Pellequer avec l’autorisation de Picasso demanda à la fonderie Valsuani de réaliser dix tirages supplémentaires d’après l’original en céramique, cette fois numérotés mais non signés. Cinq bronzes ont pu être localisés : le numéro 2/10 se trouve au Berggruen Museum de Berlin, le 5/10 au Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek de Copenhague, le 6/10 fait partie de la collection Hegewish à la Kunsthalle de Hambourg, le 9/10 a été donné par la famille Pellequer au musée Picasso de Paris en 1981 et le 10/10 a été vendu chez Christie’s en 1991. Deux autres exemplaires ont pu être identifiés dans des collections privées. Sur un plan purement technique il semblerait que les deux éditions de Femme agenouillée se coiffant – Vollard et Pellequer – aient été réalisées à la cire perdue. Claude Valsuani jouissait en effet d’une grande renommée pour ce procédé comme l’explique Elizabeth Lebon dans son Dictionnaire des fondeurs de bronze d’art (2003). Il existe deux techniques de base pour couler les bronzes qui ont très peu évoluées à travers les siècles : la fonte à la cire perdue et la fonte au sable. Depuis l’Antiquité, la technique de la cire perdue était exécutée d’après des modèles originaux en cire. La pièce était alors recouverte d’un mélange à base d’argile, on le faisait cuire, ce qui vidait la cire, puis on y coulait le bronze. page 3 / 6 ArtyParade.com Exemple de moule en cire perdue, Atelier Hébrard. Reproduit dans Vauxcelles, 1905 Le modèle original était ainsi détruit pendant la fabrication et ne servait que pour une fonte unique. Ce procédé s’est amélioré à partir du XVIIe siècle. Comme c’est le cas ici pour l’œuvre de Picasso, le modèle est à présent fabriqué en terre, plâtre ou céramique. Il est ensuite entouré d’une pâte à modeler puis recouvert de plâtre. Une fois sec, l’ensemble est démonté et la couche gélatineuse enlevée, laissant un espace vide qui va permettre de recréer un moule positif transitoire sur lesquels les détails de l’œuvre sont finalisés et les signatures de l’artiste et du fondeur apposées. Picasso n’a laissé aucune indication sur ses techniques de travail, cependant nous savons qu’il a aussi fait appel à d’autres fondeurs au début du siècle comme Florentin Godard qui était, lui, réputé pour ses fontes au sable. Ainsi la petite sculpture en bronze, Tête de femme, 1906 (Spies 12) coulée dans la fonderie de Godard, aurait été réalisée au sable. page 4 / 6 ArtyParade.com Pablo Picasso, Tête de femme, 1906, bronze. Musée Picasso, Paris © succession Picasso 2011 Cette technique nécessite un moule constitué de deux bacs de sable très fin qui durcit lorsqu’il est pressé. L’empreinte de l’objet – soit en plâtre, soit en bronze (appelé alors chef-modèle) si on veut réaliser une production en série – est alors prise dans ce moule. Un noyau en sable argileux est fixé au centre de l’empreinte par des épingles. Les deux bacs sont ensuite refermés et y coule le bronze. Les marques du fondeur doivent alors être inscrites après la fonte. La récente exposition Tous collectionneurs ! Carpeaux et Dalou édités par la maison Susse organisée au musée d’Orsay fin 2010 présentait dans des vitrines, un moule en sable, tous les outils nécessaires pour couler le bronze, ciseler et polir la sculpture ainsi qu’un chef-modèle en pièces détachées d’une sculpture de Jean-BaptisteCarpeaux. (L’exposition étant malheureusement déjà terminée, vous pouvez consulter son dossier dans la section archives d’exposition sur le site du Musée d’Orsay. Celle-ci, très didactique, expliquait le développement des éditions de la sculpture en bronze au XIXe siècle et les techniques de fonte page 5 / 6 ArtyParade.com au sable à travers l’exemple de la maison Susse Fondeur). Pour reconnaître un bronze fondu à la cire perdu d’un bronze fondu au sable, il faut regarder l’intérieur de l’œuvre. Dans le premier cas, les formes prises sur la cire sont souples. De plus, il n’y a aucune trace de montage puisque les sculptures sont réalisées en une fois et sont constituées d’une seule pièce. Pour la fonte au sable, il peut y avoir des traces de sable à l’intérieur de l’œuvre et des fractions entre les assemblages des morceaux de bronze. De plus les signatures, inscrites au préalable sur la cire ou directement sur le bronze, peuvent être identifiables. Plus facile de manipulation et permettant de plus grandes productions, la technique de la fonte au sable est largement utilisée à partir XIXe siècle. Les fontes d’art en bronze au XIXe siècle sont également à l’honneur avec la mise en ligne du site internet interactif www.e-monumen.net (http://www.e-monumen.net/) qui a pour vocation de recenser à travers le monde, les monuments et décors urbains en métal (bronze, plomb, fer) afin de valoriser le patrimoine culturel français. Ce site a pour particularité d’être un outil de recherche sans précédent pour les chercheurs ou les simples curieux, sans aucun but lucratif. Il est le fruit du rassemblement de plusieurs associations : le RIFA (Réseau international de la fonte d’art), l’ASPM (L’association pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine métallurgique haut marnais), le Musée d’Orsay et le Laboratoire de Recherche des monuments historiques. Il se compose de trois parties : Monumen dont le but est de localiser et recenser la patrimoine statutaire dans le monde, Volumen qui contient des reproductions de planches de catalogues de fonderies produisant de la statuaire en série et Nomen qui rassemble des fiches biographiques sur les acteurs des mouvements de la statuaire publique au XIXe siècle. Son contenu est encore relativement limité mais cet outil devrait pouvoir se développer rapidement puisque la base est en évolution constante. Il offre également de nombreuses informations techniques pour comprendre et reconnaître les différents types de métaux.
