Education for Tomorrow: ‘Learn in India-Learn for the World’ POST SHOW REPORT The Indian economy has emerged from being primarily agrarian to one that has a growing industrial and service sector presence. As we move up the ladder of development, the contributions of hi-tech manufacturing and high value-added services to the GDP increases. Success in leveraging knowledge and innovation is only possible with a sound infrastructure of higher education. A successful education policy forms the foundation of all fields of national development including political, social, economic, technical, scientific, and environmental. Thus, the higher the quality of university education in a country, the more prosperous and competitive are the people.

During the last decade, the education sector has dominated the economic planning. To a keen observer of Indian Higher Education (HE) over the last two decades or more, the following three key trends may be apparent:

• Increased Capacity:

Over the last two decades, Indian HE institutions have added to their capacity significantly. This has contributed to the number of students in HE institutions more than doubling since 2001 to about 31 million today.

• Growth of Private sector:

Today, 58% of enrolled students are in private institutions, with an enrolment growth rate almost 50% higher than the rate in state public institutions. The relative share is even higher in professional colleges/ institutions.

• Role of Technology:

Globally, technology is appearing to finally begin delivering on the promises of positive disruption that it had for a long time shown glimpses of. The internet and social media today have dramatically improved information access - and have served to begin the process of removing information asymmetry that has typically characterized Indian HE at the student-aspirant level.

The education sector in India is poised to witness major growth in the years to come as India will have world's largest tertiary-age population and second largest graduate talent pipeline globally by the end of 2020. Higher education system in India has undergone rapid expansion. ABOUT Currently, India's higher education system is the largest in the world enrolling over 70 million students while in less than two decades, India has managed to create additional capacity for over 40 million students. At present, higher education sector witnesses spending of over Rs INDIAN 46,200 crore (US$ 6.78 billion), and it is expected to grow at an average annual rate of over 18 per cent to reach Rs 232,500 crore (US$ 34.12 billion) in next 10 years. HIGHER Education sector has seen a host of reforms and improved financial outlays in recent years that could possibly transform the country into a knowledge haven. With human resource increasingly gaining significance in the overall development of the country, development of EDUCATION education infrastructure is expected to remain the key focus in the current decade. In this scenario, infrastructure investment in the education sector is likely to see a considerable increase in the current decade. The Government of India has taken several steps including opening of IIT's and IIM's in new locations as well as allocating SECTOR educational grants for research scholars in most government institutions. Furthermore, with online modes of education being used by several educational organisations, the higher education sector in India is set for some major changes and developments in the years to come.
