EDITO //////////////////// berlin, found and lost and found and 4 Exciting times. Berlin sizzles, boils over, becomes tepid and then bubbles away again. This tendency is surely a strength, but of course it makes for some confusion. Which way will things go – which way should they go - ask the decision-makers. Still, one cannot help but notice the sheer bounce in the way Berlin moves and shakes. Just when everything looks grim, everything becomes possible once again. //////////////////PHOTo: walter bettens Space for change Creative utopia 14 West Berlin - East Berlin, how things have changed during recent years. However, the considerable physical transformation and the plethora of creative activity in today's Berlin lack financial back up or solid infrastructure, as if 'real' change – the sort that brings credibility and stature – has yet to come. Just how significant is Berlin as a location for Design? Caught between a rock and a hard place 22 When it comes to a discussion on the appropriateness of Berlin being a centre for design, it's complicated. With so many active designers located here and much good energy being spent producing respectable output, it is hard to wonder why not. Still, as the guys doing all the organising of the fairs and events are quick to point out, the viability of this well-deserved status is riddled with question marks.

The passage of time is inherent to life and leaves its mark on all of human civilisation, but in terms of pace there are waves that rise in certain places at certain times. Berlin is most definitely a city in which the curve of change over the recent past can be readily seen and felt.

Creative options: Artists and theatre groups took over the remains of the former department store 'Passage'. The building, located in the historical Jewish quarter in Berlin Mitte, was originally built at the beginning of the last century. After the fall of the Wall, it was renamed 'Tacheles' and became a creative platform for alternative art

Nostalgia is a funny thing. A common tendency that when materialised in the form of a frozen moment, especially a massive collection of them gathered together in one place, generates a decidedly unnatural atmosphere. So it is with the Museum of Letters, where isolated fragments of significant entities, people or even films, have been scavenged and lovingly preserved to admire anew, however far out of context.

The Berlin Carré Shopping Centre at Alexan- derplatz is a place of nostalgia. Here time seems to have halted at the point just before the wall came down, sparing it from all the hype of the new German capital. The neologism Ostalgie, derived from the German words “Ost” (east) and “Nostalgie”, defines the atmosphere of the whole building well, from its architecture to its individual premises – the most sentimental place being the Ostpaket shop, which sells everyday goods and brands from the ex-GDR.

Bringing agriculture back into the city, these allotments are embraced by urban citizens keen to re-invent Berlin and to do so on their own terms. Many people, especially those from the surrounding neighbourhoods of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, seem to be willing to garden locally, finding value in the concept of producing and not just consuming.

Berliners can sometimes be a rather uncon- ventional species. No matter how metropolitan they might feel, they have a near-bucolic fond- ness for their own gardens. Straw Lounge IS CONSTRUCTED ENTIRELY OF STEEL. WHAT MAKES THE CHAIR UNIQUE IS the way in which the tubular steel has been deformed. Instead of forming the frame in gentle bends, the steel tubes are folded. Folds and kinks are the most obvious way to deform a tube, but the contrast with the otherwise rounded shape of the tube produces a result that seems almost to have been fashioned by hand. design: osko + deichmann, produced by Blå Station www.oskodeichmann.com

A NEW WAY OF DESIGN PRODUCTION TRADITIONAL CRAFTS, MODERN TECHNOLOGIES AND NEW MEDIA FORMED THE STARTING POINT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION OF THREE OBJECTS, WHOSE VARIOUS LAYERS REPRESENT THE PROCESS OF NETWORKING. ECONOMICS IS AT THE FOUNDATION OF THIS IDEA, TAKING ACCOUNT OF HOW THE RESOURCES OF A REGION AFFECT DESIGN BY WAY OF THE PRODUCTION AND DESIGN PROCESS. THE SKILLS OF EACH MANUFACTURER IMPACT THE OBJECTS IN REGARD TO MATERIALS, MANUFACTURING PROCESS AND FUNCTION. LOCALLY-BASED PRODUCTION OFFERS THE POSSIBILITY OF SITE-SPECIFIC DESIGN, AND THUS REPRESENTS AN ALTERNATIVE TO ANONYMOUS PRODUCTION. FLEXIBILITY AND MASTERY ARE COMBINED. IN THIS WAY, FURNITURE AND OBJECTS CAN BE DESIGNED IN BOLD COLOURS, BY MAKING PROCESS-RELEVANT CONNECTIONS VIA THE PRODUCTION NETWORK, RESULTING IN AN UNUSUAL MIX. design: Franz Dietrich

HOTEL

On encountering the latest project by designer Hermann //////////////////August Weizenegger (HAW), ONE IMMERSES ONESELF IN THE WORLD OF 19TH CENTURY EUROPEAN IDEAS, A TIME WHEN AN ENTIRE generation of artists dreamed of the aesthetic synthesis of the arts, realised in one universal gesamt- kunstwerk. The dream of the gesamtkunstwerk was always a dream without a presence, filled admittedly with a past and believing in a future. From both it attempted to construct what it itself lacked – a present. This present is now being REALISED IN UNITY, FORGED BY WEIZENEGGER FROM ALL DESIGN AND ART FORMS, TO ENGENDER A COMPLEX OF WORK WITH THE OMINOUS SOUNDING NAME OF 'HOTEL DRESDEN'.

Weizenegger has created a three-dimensional mise-en- scène that truly challenges our imagination. First of all, in a presumably unique encounter, a reconstruction of the lobby of the 'Hotel Dresden' is presented with fittings and furniture that seemingly have survived as designs or fragments. However, the project takes as its starting point that much becomes apparent after careful study and reading of the exhibits, the conceptual fiction on which the 'Hotel Dresden' project rests. The narrative and the objects, the design sketches, the history of the hotel’s origins and the biographical data on the architects and designers, turn out to be HAW’s carefully constructed and realised inventions.

What's 'out there' is nothing short of a mixed bag. DAMN° gathered up a selection of Berlin's best in contemporary design- much of which can be seen live at Qubique. Carpet tiles seem to be all the rage right now, with endless possible shapes and colours to configure to one's fancy, and then there are those seating elements, some of which provide the potential for standing or sleeping. We particularly like the clever items that hardly take any space or material but can accommodate books or other things in a variety of arrangements, and the flat-pack bed is cool too. Coffee labels and big tables continue to be designed and, judging from those here, improved upon.

A true fairytale

Martin Heller can be an enchanted man when it comes to fairytales... As a lost brother Grimm he meanders- gently through the swampy grounds of the Berlin castle...

Mitten in Berlin. Wie es sich gehört.

MARTIN HELLER Martin Heller, former director of the Zurich Design Museum, amongst many other promi- nent roles, has his hand in several Berlin pies these days, lending experience and insight into things like think tank discussions on IBA 2020 and the planning of the Humboldt-Forum in the new Berlin City Castle. Appropriately enough, and especially for DAMN° Berlin Stories, he has written a present-day fairytale.
