JUBILEE OF FATIMA - 1917-2017

Dear Parishioners & Friends,

For the past year the entire Church and our parish in particular, have observed the special Jubilee Year celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the merciful apparitions of Our Blessed Lady to the three little shepherd chil- dren at Fatima, Portugal. It truly has been a year of grace for all and a tremendous outpouring of love and devotion to the most excellent of all mothers, our Heavenly Queen! From the monthly First Saturday Devo- tions, to the services on the 13th of the month from May through October; the parish pilgrimage to Fatima and Lourdes; the rosaries prayed in our church and at the subway; the statue of Our Lady of Fatima being vener- ated and the beautiful ceremony of consecration of our parish to the Sor- rowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary and the individual consecrations you made for the first time or renewed on the 13th of October, the Fatima Message was made known and lived on 37th St!

As Pope St. John Paul II stated “Fatima is more pertinent now than it was in 1917,” the challenge for us is to continue to live Our Lady’s Peace Plan of Prayer (especially the Most Holy Rosary), Sacrifice (to make reparation for poor sinners), and Consecra- tion to Her Sorrowful and Immaculate (through the wearing of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.) With the graces of this Jubilee Year supporting us, may we move forward as a parish family and together con- quer the world for the Immaculate, beginning right here in the Garment District and Times Square!

O Fatima, Farewell!,

Fr. Miara

The Miracle of the Miraculous Medal: Designed and Revealed by the Blessed Virgin

The Medal of the , popularly known as the Miraculous Medal, is unique among all medals.

The Miraculous Medal was created in response to a request from the Blessed Virgin Mary, who entrusted us with our mission. It was given by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself! No wonder, then, that it gives such extraordinary graces to those who wear it and pray for Mary’s intercession and help. Our Lady manifested the Medal to St. Catherine Labouré on November 27, 1830, in the motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac, in Paris.

Catherine saw Our Lady standing on a globe, with dazzling rays of light streaming from her outstretched hands. Framing the figure was an inscription: “O Mary, con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” Then Mary spoke to Catherine: “Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck.”

The vision then seemed to turn to show the reverse of the Medal: the letter M surmounted by a cross with a bar at its base; below this monogram, the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced with a sword.

With approval of the Catholic Church, the first medals were made in 1832 and were distributed in Paris. Almost immediately the blessings that Mary had prom- ised began to shower down on those who wore her medal, and soon all of France was clamoring for what the people referred to as the “Miraculous Medal.” Use of the Medal spread from country to country and now blankets the world. Everywhere, the Medal is still drawing down from God blessings for body and soul.

At The Blessed by Cardinal O’Connor on December 28, 1993 Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
