The Yellowstone National Park Protection Act states, “the headwaters of the Yellowstone River…is hereby reserved and withdrawn from settlement, occupancy, or sale…and dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” The Organic Act of the National Park Service On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act creating the National Park Service, a federal bureau in the Department of the Interior.     Conservationists and the Battles to Keep Dams Out of Yellowstone: Hetch Hetchy Overturned Michael J. Yochim Abstract Between 1919 and 1938 irrigation interests in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming repeatedly tried to construct reservoirs in Yellowstone National Park by damming several large park lakes and Bechler Meadows. Conservationists of the time joined forces with Horace Albright and Steven Mather of the National Park Service to oppose the dams. Ultimately successful in all their efforts, their key victory came in 1923 when they defeated an attempt to dam Yellowstone Lake. This victory reversed the loss of protected status for national parks that had occurred just ten years earlier at Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park. By chronicling the protracted conflict over dams in Yellowstone, I illustrate that the conservationists (including Mather and Albright) reestablished the funda- mental preservation policy of the national parks and empowered the newly cre- ated National Park Service to carry out its mission of park protection. This effort was the key battle in proving national parks and wilderness to be inviolate to industrial, exploitive uses. Conservationists both defined and tested the inviolate policy in Yellowstone; their battles in Dinosaur National Monument and the Grand Canyon cemented it into place.     Geologic Resource Evaluation Scoping Summary Yellowstone National Park This document summarizes the results of a geologic resource evaluation scoping session that was held at Yellowstone National Park on May 16–17, 2005.     Journal of the Amerimn Museum of Fly Fishing WINTER 2~03 VOLUME 19 NUMBER I Trout Memories and Pike Tales caught and released my first trout in April 1989 on the Beaverlull. My memory of this is pretty good, I think, Ialthough it's not as vivid as perhaps it should be. I know the date because my husband saved the black stonefly nymph and framed it in a shadowbox-an act of historical documentation close to the date of the actual event. When we lived in the D.C. area, we'd sometimes drive up to Big Hunting Creek, a favorite haunt of my high school days. I must have occasionally caught fish there, but I can't remember any particular fish. Maybe I didn't catch any. What I remember is being happy on the familiar creek, away from the city. What if I did vividly remember these fishing trips? Would I be right in their detail? How much of memory is what actual- ly happened, and how much of it is remembering the story we tell ourselves about what happened? How do the details change over time? Paul Schullery was doing a lot of fly fishing in Yellowstone National Park thirty years ago when he first began reading By noting the first published claim of pike not taking the about the sport's history. PJL,ORADO STATE UN !VEKS ITY LI BRARIES i ABSTRACT WIN TER ECOLOOY OF ID:GHORN SHEEP IN YELLOVlS'IDHE NA TI ONAL PARK A bighorn sheep study was conducted on the northern winter range of yellowstone National Park, TNY01~inE from JIDle 1965 to June 1966. The objectives of the study were to census the bighorn population, map the winter bighorn distribution, detennine plant conposition and utilization on irnportant bighorn winter ranees, observe daily feedine habits, and assess the effect of competition on bighorn sheep. ~o hundred twen~ nine bighorn sheep wintered on the northern winter range. These herds were located on Nt. Everts, along the Yellowstone River, on Specimen Ridge, and along Soda Butte Creek. The ewe to ram ratio was 100: 78, the ewe to lamb ra tic waS 100: 47, and the ewe to yearling ratio was 100: 20. Range analysis was done on HacHinn Bench, Specimen Ridge, and Druid Peak.
