NOVEMBER 2019 DALGETY COMMUNITY TRUST Dalgety Community Trust is a non-profit body set up by community volunteers to make positive changes for everyone in our community. We want to be able to carry out projects which will have an impact and provide a sustainable presence in the community for years to come! We’d love to hear your ideas and suggestions on these three possible projects for the future so why not get in touch ([email protected]) A new multifunctional building that has many spaces big and small. Adaptable enough to suit small groups but large enough to host a community cinema for 200 residents. A meeting place, club space or somewhere for parish history …. It’s up to you what do you think? NOW MAYBE?

A new community landscaped civic space that can host town events like farmer’s markets, craft fairs and Christmas events. It could be a place for a casual coming together of friends or simply a spot with seating so you can read your paper or check Facebook! NOW SCOPE FOR SOMETHING NEW?

We are so lucky in the Bay to have the coastal path on our doorstep so why not join it all together? We think there is real scope to create a 1.5km leisure walk to the Coastal Path and Community Woods through Longhill Park which will have a path wide and accessible enough for all users. What do you think? Picture credit – Emma Baker

We will be inviting residents to a series of public events so that you can be fully involved in the Design Stages of any projects we take forward. To help us ensure everyone is involved, please Like or Follow the Dalgety Community Trust Facebook page and join the Trust using the link on our page (it’s FREE)

5 INVERKEITHING MEDICAL GROUP SURGERY NEWS The 13th of November is World Kindness Day. Rushing about our busy lives, we sometimes fail to see the many acts of kindness that sustain us. That kind greeting and smile from your neighbour. That offer of tea when you are having a bad day. Your dinner being cooked and the dishes washed. All these little acts have a ripple effect and we should try to pass it on. It is important to take time to be kind to others. Sometimes, all you need to do is just be patient and listen. Or just doing some chores around the house, I know I really appreciate it when the bins get taken out! It is also important to be kind to yourself. You are allowed to have those 30 minutes to soak in the bath or watch bad reality TV. Remember: “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible” - Dalai Lama Dr Lilin Zheng Out of Stock Medicines Occasionally manufacturers and suppliers are unable to provide community pharmacies with the medicines they have ordered for various reasons. This may result in pharmacies having to change to an alternative medicine which at times is not always straightforward: there may not be a suitable substitute available and extra appointments may be required to ensure the changed medicine is having the desired effect. Where possible we always try to continue the current medicine if it can be obtained from another source. To help us do so please consider the following: • Check the amount of medicine you have at home – do you require a supply within the next 1-2 weeks or is the medicine expected to be ‘in stock’ before your supply runs out? • Can another pharmacy obtain the medicine for you? If you are unable to source your medicine, the Practice Pharmacy Team can review the alternative options available and where appropriate issue a new prescription, give relevant advice or arrange for GP review if necessary. As it may take several days to arrange a review by a clinician, please contact us as soon as you are aware that your medicine is unavailable. Flu Vaccinations for eligible patients - Please contact the surgery to make an appointment. Records Update - Help us to keep your medical records up to date. To make way for palm oil plantations, vast areas of rainforest are cleared. In Indonesia alone, an area the size of two football pitches is lost every minute. Palm oil production is, arguably, the biggest factor in the world’s deforestation, leading to the destruction of the natural habitats of many endangered wildlife species. Forest fires which have been started to clear land for unsustainable palm oil production release high levels of carbon dioxide and black carbon into the atmosphere – a huge And thank you to Eric Simpson for this photograph of contributing factor in the path on Letham Hill. climate change. Plantations have also been linked with wider problems, from poor working conditions to ‘land grabbing’ of community lands. We should not avoid palm oil altogether (it is a very efficient crop requiring less pesticides and fertilisers than similar crops like soyabean or coconut oil and provides jobs for millions of smallholder farmers) but focus on using it responsibly and only buying products where the palm oil has been sourced sustainably. FairPalm has been developed as the world’s only fair trade, organic palm oil that protects the environment whilst supporting smallholder growers. FairPalm recognises the value of palm oil, since little land is needed, it is fairly low maintenance and extremely high yielding. So, next time you need a bar of soap… FairPalm products can be ordered from Traidcraft at: www.traidcraftshop.co.uk If you would like to become a Fairtrade supporter or would like more information about Fairtrade, please contact Winnie Wood, Chair (822516) or Robin Arnott, Secretary (822293). PLASTIC-FREE DALGETY BAY Our steering committee held its first meeting on 26th September. The main outcomes were as follows: 1) We have appointed people to get in touch with all of our local schools with a view to them participating in the Plastic-Free Schools initiative. Since the meeting, we have also been contacted by Inverkeithing High and will be exploring how we can work with them. Our co-coordinator Lindsay is running a crisp packet recycling campaign for the schools. 2) We have drawn up a list of local businesses to approach about becoming Plastic-Free Champions and will be reaching out to some of them over the coming weeks. 3) We intend to lobby Rowlands Pharmacy head office to stop avoidable use of plastic bags to dispense their prescriptions. We have spoken to our local branch about this and are cooperating with them – the issue is out of their hands and needs to be addressed with central management. More details to follow. 4) We discussed the idea of a Plastic-Freebuary campaign in the Bay. We will flesh out the details at our next meeting – watch this space. 5) Efforts are ongoing to make next year’s Gala as plastic-free as possible, although there are limits on what will be possible given the nature of the event. If anyone reading this would like to get more closely involved in our work, please do get in touch – and feel free to send in your ideas, questions and suggestions. In other news, we have been awarded our own litter sticks by FCCT in recognition of our efforts as one of the most active beach cleaning groups in Fife. FCCT will also be putting a piece about us on social media. Plastic-free Tip of the Month: There are more and more places offering loose food items that you can put in your own bags or containers. Most of the fresh produce at Woodlea Stables is plastic-free, and the Happy Earth Place in Dunfermline sells a range of loose dry goods. Facebook: Plastic-Free Dalgety Bay; e-mail: [email protected]
