June 3, 2018

Dear Supporter, Dear Friend,

Golda Meir once said that old age is like a plane flying through a storm. Tonight, let us recognize that you and every person at your table and throughout the ballroom are pilots, and we are doing so much more than charting our own course. Together, we are copiloting thousands of local elders through a tempest, enabling them not only to survive but to be the best that they could be.

You are a hero among heroes, and I thank you.

Propelled by your selfless support, the 94 staff and the 900 volunteers of the Jewish Council for the Aging work wonders!

• We help local, vulnerable elders shoulder the burdens of cognitive impairment and physical limitations.

• We find rides for seniors who cannot or should not drive.

2 • We find jobs for seasoned and capable jobseekers who are eager to work.

• We provide timely assistance to loving and sometimes desperate families that need trustworthy information about aging, caregiving and essential benefits.

• We help struggling young students to succeed in school and life while enabling them to experience the kindness of older volunteers in their midst.

Propelled by your boundless generosity, the people and programs of the Jewish Council for the Aging provide dignity and social justice to older adults who need it and deserve it.

So thank you heroes, and thank you for a lifetime of achievement and for volunteering — volunteering! — to join us tonight as a champion of productive aging.

Thank you Bobbe and Herb Mintz for epitomizing the goodness within us all.

Thank you Susan and Alan Miller and the Dinner Committee you chair for planning an event that is sure to shine.

And thank you Micki Gordon, JCA’s Assistant CEO, for breathing life and joy into 25 consecutive, wonderful years of Productive Aging Award Dinners.

Together, we fly!

Natalie Cantor

3 From the Chairs June 3, 2018

Dear Friends,

We are proud to welcome all of you to the JCA’s 25th Sylvia Blajwas Productive Aging Award Dinner. We thank you for your support in honoring this year’s award recipient, Frankie Avalon, and, our Humanitarian Awardees, Bobbe and Herb Mintz. Your support is vital to the continuing education, services and assistance the Jewish Council for the Aging provides to local seniors who strive to age productively and well.

The disparity between the “haves” and the “have nots” continues to widen in this day and age. The population of older adults who are living longer but struggling financially, are isolated or have other obstacles that keep them from living well in our affluent area continues to grow. Fortunately most of us can look forward to living well, living longer and enjoying our old age.

The reality is, though, federal spending priorities have shifted away from domestic needs. State and local governments have followed suit resulting in loss of government funds for our much needed JCA programs thus making it more difficult year to year to meet the growing needs of our at risk older adult population of “have nots.” JCA really needs your support now more than ever so we may continue to offer programs that help people age well and stay connected. We look forward to a wonderful evening of fun, fellowship, generosity and appreciation for our honorees and as we listen to how they can age productively.

Therefore, we thank you for coming out to celebrate with our honorees, for being part of our JCA community and lastly, but far from least, for generously supporting JCA. We could not do all that we do without your support.

Warmly, Susan and Alan Miller

Honoree

One of America’s most popular entertainers, Frankie Avalon went from 50’s teen idol to a national and international star.

6 Born in Philadelphia, Frankie had his early trumpet playing career end abruptly when a family friend Bob Marcucci heard him sing and signed him to a recording contract. His first song ”De De Dinah” became a smash hit and his recording of “Venus” was one of the biggest selling hits of the era. He had many follow up hits such as “Bobbysocks to Stockings,” “Gingerbread,” “,” and “A Boy Without a Girl.” He is also credited with having the last number one record of the 50’s with “Why” reaching that status in December 1959.

In addition to his popularity as a top recording artist, Frankie became a motion picture star, appearing in over 30 movies, starring with such luminaries as Alan Ladd in “Guns of Timberland” and John Wayne in “The Alamo.” Other film credits include “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” and the hit musical “Grease.” His biggest popularity in movies came when he starred in the classic Beach movies… “Beach Party,” “Muscle Beach Party,” “Beach Blanket Bingo,” and “Bikini Beach” among others.

A highly popular attraction on the concert circuit throughout the world, he has appeared in every major country and his appearance at the International Festival of Stars in Romania marked the second time that an entertainer from the United States performed in that Iron Curtain country since World War II, the other being Louis Armstrong. In addition to his solo performances, in 1985 Frankie began touring with two neighborhood friends—Fabian and Bobby Rydell—in a show entitled “The Golden Boys.” That show is now in its 25th year of touring, with over 500 hundred shows. The Golden boys have appeared on many major television specials such as “The American Music Awards,” the closing ceremonies of the “Miss Liberty Special,” (which was seen by over 200 million people) and the ABC Inaugural special, “Command Performance: An All-Star Salute To The President.”

In 1987, Frankie reunited with his co-star in the original beach movies, Annette Funicello in the summer movie hit “Back To The Beach.” Frankie can also be seen regularly on the Home Shopping Network on behalf of his company, Avalon Products.

Apart from his busy work schedule, Frankie is an avid golfer and lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kay, who he married in 1963. Together, they have eight children.

8 Bobbe

Barbara Mintz — “Bobbe” to her friends — is a champion of the Jewish Council for the Aging, where she led fundraising campaigns, tackled tough fiscal issues, presented seniors’ needs to state and local lawmakers, and did so much more. She served as JCA President from 2010 to 2012 and is active at JCA to this day. Also, and since retiring as an administrative judge for the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, she has been a volunteer leader on many fronts, including in the Women of Reform Judaism at Temple Sinai, and for Montgomery County, Maryland. Among other things, she chaired the Montgomery County Human Trafficking Task Force and served on the Montgomery County Commission for Women.

Bobbe loves volunteering to make a difference. And she loves Starbucks.

Herb

Herbert (Herb) Mintz, previously a member of the JCA Board, is now a JCA Trustee. He retired after a long career at Finnegan, where he practiced intellectual property law and had the opportunity to mentor many younger attorneys, a role he greatly valued. Herb has many talents and interests. For example: he is passionate about his volunteer work for the library at Temple Sinai and for a historical society in Washington, D.C.; he enjoys writing, especially about history; and he derives great pleasure out of his book and discussion groups and the lectures he attends (and sometimes gives).

Bobbe and Herb reside in Chevy Chase, MD and love that their family is close by and so much a part of their lives.

10 The Productive Aging Award and Humanitarian Award The Productive Aging Award depicts a tree of life, and the Humanitarian Award depicts a hand holding a globe. Both are sculptures in glass, and local artist Steve Resnick designed them especially for JCA.

Steve has been working in glass since the 1960s. After both undergraduate and graduate studies at Cornell, he stayed on to teach techniques of stained glass. Steve arrived in the Washington, D.C. area in 1976, establishing one of the most successful art glass studios in the region and then producing countless commissions of stained, etched and carved glass for residential and commercial use. Steve is a leading authority on glass restoration and has been called upon to participate in restoration projects for the Smithsonian Institution as well as the U.S. Capitol. Borrowing on his experience in stone sculpture, his glass carving is characterized by its wonderful textual quality utilizing intricate organic motifs.

Steve developed a magnificent collection of glass Judaica which can be seen in galleries throughout the United States. His work has been featured in a number of distinguished museums including B’nai B’rith Klutznick Museum, Washington, D.C.; The Baltimore Museum of Art; Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art; American Craft Museum, New York; and Hebrew Union College Museum, New York.

Resnick sculptures have been presented to dignitaries worldwide including Shimon Peres, Jeane Kirkpatrick, President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, Elie Wiesel, Queen Noor of Jordan, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

11 From the Desk of Sylvia Raphael, JCA Past President

25 Years of a Great Idea JCA, like most social service agencies, is always struggling to get a steady stream of revenue to carry on its programs. Under the presidency of Irvin “Bud” Lavine, I was assigned to find such revenue.

Several attempts were made to raise money. Maury Atkin held a yearly auction; Kitty Strauss oversaw a Thrift Shop in Silver Spring; Jackie Unger, a staffer, introduced Designer Dress Days – a clothing sale, with the tireless efforts of Marilyn Tublin, Joan Kline, Barbara Dickstein and Marcia Stern. I introduced a “Buy-A-Bus Luncheon” with entertainment by “Mrs. Foggybottom,” a cabaret singer. A lot of effort and fun, but with limited results until I got a late night call from newly-recruited volunteer, Sonia Levin.

Twenty-five years ago, Sonia had a “eureka moment”—“Let’s have an award dinner to recognize a celebrity who continues to be productive in his or her later years. Isn’t that what JCA is all about? We can call it ‘The Productive Aging Award Dinner.’” The rest is history.

In the last 25 years, we have had the good fortune to honor outstanding journalists, artists, performers, politicians, writers, all of whom embody the goals of JCA and enable “all seniors to thrive.”

Happy Productive Aging’s 25th Anniversary!

Sylvia Raphael

15 Sylvia Blajwas

“Thank God I can do this for others,” was the typical refrain of Sylvia Blajwas whenever she made a gift to the Jewish Council for the Aging, where hers is the name behind the Sylvia & Abe Blajwas Center for Productive Aging. Through the Blajwas Center, JCA shatters negative stereotypes about growing old while providing programs to help older adults land jobs, learn new technologies and volunteer to make the world a better place.

At a young age, Sylvia and her family emigrated to the U.S. from England, eventually settling in Washington, D.C. She worked at the Salvation Army so she could attend The George Washington University at night. At GW, she received a B.A. in psychology and fell in love with fellow student Abe Blajwas. Abe and Sylvia married in 1935, and then worked together to build and maintain his medical practice. They had a son, Harold, now in California.

Sylvia’s mother taught her the importance of charity, but it was a trip to Israel that was the catalyst for an adult life centered on philanthropy at Hadassah, JCA and other organizations, too. “The thing about giving,” she said, “is that it comes back to you many times over. …And the best part is knowing that your gift continues to give long after you make it.”

16 “The thing about giving is that it comes back to you many times over.”

Sylvia told JCA leaders that she would like to be remembered as “a nice Jewish girl who knew the inspiring love of a wonderful husband, a dear family and close friends. Those gifts made everything else possible.”

Sylvia died on September 18, 2013, yet she lived to celebrate her 100th birthday. She was predeceased by her beloved brothers Sidney and Lester Poretsky, and her beloved Abe. She is lovingly remembered at JCA not only by the Blajwas Center but now by the Sylvia Blajwas Productive Aging Award Dinner, JCA’s only annual fundraising event. Like Sylvia, JCA programs are a declaration of lifelong abilities.

About the Sylvia & Abe Blajwas Center for Productive Aging at the Jewish Council for the Aging The graying of America and the growing need for our nation to remain competitive in the global marketplace make it essential for the U.S. to utilize its older citizens’ skills and experience. JCA, in nearly 45 years of award-winning operations, has demonstrated that ability knows no age. The JCA Sylvia & Abe Blajwas Center for Productive Aging assists individuals on a nonsectarian basis to realize their potential for productive aging in both volunteer and paid employment.
